Photo Assignment - The Return
By Gary Ferrington.

In September, 2004 I suggested that one could enhance their ability to see and photograph by creating a personal photo shoot assignment. That activity focused on the examination of a local park and within it, a small playground area. For reference check out the first photo assignment.

The season and lighting has changed and this provides an opportunity to revisit the playground and look again and see what new images can be discovered. This second visit proved that there is always something different to see and photograph - even in the smallest of areas such as this playground.

This is the playground which provides a constrained area of about 140 square feet within which to photograph.

The addition of a street lamp to the playground provided a new object to explore in terms of shapes, forms, color, and the play of shadow.

The children's slide, as in the first exploration of the playground, proved to be a source of interesting images of which this is one example.

There is an umbrella like tree that edges the playground. Going under its generous covering provided the opportunity to look out on this sunny day.

Posted playground rules and regulations have been vandalized. The result makes for an intriguing abstract image.

Of particular interest on this assignment was the growing length of shadows created by the change of season. By the end of Fall these shadows were extremely long given our location about half way between the Equator and the North Pole.

This particular shadow is created by the wood frame surrounding the top of the slide. the shadow appears to be very fluid as it ripples out across the playground's sand.
