DISCUSSION:OpenEar Update

When I start one of these Newsletters I'm always wondering if there will be any jobs to post. By the time Sunday rolls around there seem to be a number of positions that have opened. Once again, there is a wide range of opportunities and that is good to see given the economy. I've recently heard that because of these postings a couple of members on the list have found new jobs. That is good news indeed.

One thing that Ken and I have learned over the past two years is that it takes a lot of time and effort to produce a quality product as we hope the OpenEar disc will be. If we were working full-time on OpenEar we would probably have the project completed. But given we have other responsibilities in addition to Proscenia, the project continues at a slow but productive pace.

The "Name That Sound?" module on which Brian Murphy, Josh Taylor, Pete Monterubio, Karla Berg, and Tom Nevin have worked, will soon be ready for Beta testing. We hope to have the "Listen Up!" module near completion by the end of this academic term. This module is one on which Erika Modesitt, Christina Subetkti, Cory Otjen, and Josh Taylor have been involved.

Other modules are nearing completion including "What is Foley?" on which Ben Danielson, Karen Mornes, and Kanade Sato have been involved. We will keep you posted as the disc progresses and will no doubt will be sending out Beta material for some of you to explore and provide feedback.

Meanwhile, we are going to be updating the Proscenia web site. We'd like to have photographs of those former and current Interns and adjunct staff for which we yet don't have pictures. These include: Kanade Sato, Brian Murphy, Erin Currin, Tami Schamp, Nat Flynn-Ryan, Tom Nevin, Cory Otjen, and Josh Taylor. If you have a picture we can use please send it to Gary ASP- thanks!

We would also like to link to your web personal or professional web site if you have one. Please send your URL to Gary.

Ken and I are please to have Kanade Sato, Tami Schamp, Tom Nevin, Cory Otjen, and Josh Taylor working with us this term as Interns.

Again, thanks for all the great effort everyone has made. Your work is most appreciated. And, as always, if you'd like to be removed from this list let me know (garywf@oregon.uoregon.edu)

Regards, Gary

TECHNOLOGY NEWS:

Painting the Walls with Information. Microsoft designer Gary Starkweather, who invented the laser printer when he was at Xerox and won an Academy Award for his work on film scanning, wants to enlarge and bend the PC screen: "I'd never seen moviegoers get really thrilled on small screen. It becomes a much more compelling experience at an IMAX theater. I thought, What if we had a computer display that looked more like a Cinerama?" So he designed a prototype curved PC screen 12 inches high, 44 inches wide, and curved 90 degrees, five times as bright as current CRT or LCD screens, and able to accommodate several open applications at once or a single application stretched across that huge space. "Our role in bringing personal computing to the masses should not just be a computer terminal; it should enable a human being to utilize their senses in a more productive fashion. Anything that can help you express creativity and look at information in new ways is going to benefit... Most people try to find something to cover their walls with. Why not cover them with information?" (San Jose Mercury News 11 Jan 2003) http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/4924188.htm Source:NewsScanDaily

The Battle to Outwit TV Ad-Skippers. With TiVo and other digital recording devices making it easier and easier for TV viewers to skip commercials, the television and advertising industry are resorting to planting advertisements within TV shows themselves. A new variety show (dubbed by its developers as "a contemporary, hip 'Ed Sullivan' show,") will integrate commercial spots for its sponsors right into the program itself. [What next? Maybe a dramatic series with the actors dressed in costumes promoting mortgage companies or health-fitness clubs.] Pepsi and Nokia are the two main sponsors of the new show, tentatively called "Live from Tomorrow." Yeah, that what it sounds like -- tomorrow, all right. We can't wait. (USA Today 13 Jan 2003) http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2003-01-10-tivo-zapper_x.htm Source:NewsScanDaily

VCR to get new Initials: R.I.P. The VCR is dead (or dying), long live the DVD (at least for a little while, for crying out loud). Stores like Circuit City and Barnes & Noble's either are sharply reducing their inventories of VHS tapes or no longer carrying them at all. (The video category of Best Buy's offerings is already more than 80% DVD.) And the storyline is the same out in Hollywood: MGM Entertainment's VHS library now numbers only 200 films (compared to 1,800 at one previous point), and Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment is phasing out certain VHS catalog titles once they are released on DVD. Industry analyst Tom Adams says, "The issue was always will VHS have the stink of death of the eight-track tape. By now it's pretty clear that it will." (USA Today 14 Jan 2003) http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2003-01-13-vcr_x.htm Source:NewsScanDaily

Music, Tech Groups Reach Compromise on Copyright Issues. The Recording Industry Association of America, the Business Software Alliance and the Computer Systems Policy Project have hammered out a compromise agreement that they say will protect copyrights on music and movies without the need for further government intervention. The pact is intended to head off efforts by Congress to legislate the inclusion of government-approved copy restriction technology in all new "digital media devices." This latest agreement, described by participants as a "landmark consensus," politically isolates the powerful Motion Picture Association of America, which was noticeably absent from the negotiations. MPAA has aggressively advocated new government requirements for built-in locking controls on new devices, such as DVD players. (AP 14 Jan 2003) http://shorl.com/hydidrostobubri Source:NewsScanDaily

Intel Technology Journal [.pdf] http://developer.intel.com/technology/itj/index.htm This quarterly journal from Intel addresses many issues related to computers and networking technology. The articles are not overly technical in nature, making them appropriate for a broad audience. Each issue of the journal has a general area of focus. Some recent topics include smart toys, the "digital home," and Hyper-Threading Technology. While the later is an Intel-specific development, most of the topics are applicable to the industry as a whole. The journal was originally internal to Intel, but every issue since the journal went public in 1997 is now available in an archive. Source: The Scout Report
