Newsletter:Events -News - Jobs February 16 2003 A couple of items of interest to begin with this week. Ken highly recommends that anyone using Macromedia products check this out. There are some real gems in here. http://www.macromedia.com/desdev/tip/archive.html. Many of the tutorial movies are 6 or 7 megabytes, so it works best if you have a DSL or cable modem. The movies can be copied to your hard drive if you have QuickTime pro. I have done a bit more foot work related to finding funding revenue. please pass this newsletter on to other students or individuals you know
who are interested in media arts and communication. DID YOU KNOW? Desktop publishing originated in Oregon in 1985? University of Oregon graduate Paul Brainerd invented Aldus PageMaker software, which revolutionized publishing. (Register Guard:2/26/03) DISCUSSION: I've Made My Film. Now how do I get it seen? One of the best places to get your video, film, animation or multimedia work exhibited and known by distributors and the public is at a film or media festival. There are hundreds such events around the world each year that welcome, most often for an entry fee, new work by young media professionals. Your first efforts may not qualify for a Sundance or Cannes event. But there are many others such as the Chicago Underground Film Festival which might just be the ticket. Also check out local cafes, coffeehouses, and independent movie houses. They sometimes host monthly screenings. There is also the Internet where independent film and media producers are increasingly exhibiting their work. Some people take their films on the road such as the award-winning "toxic comedy" Blue Vinyl recently shown at Churchill High School in Eugene. Check out Blue Vinyl (http://www.bluevinyl.org/ ) and see how the producers of this film are marketing their work known by hitting the road and showing it in festivals, conferences and events. This week's discussion provides information about festival events, how to participate and what to expect as a result of your having a film or media project exhibited. First, some online articles that explore the strategies and issues of festival life. Film Festival Strategies So you've finished your short and want to show the world. What to do? A film maker's perspective about entering film festivals. Provides tips and links to important festival information sites. Submitting Your Film to Festivals "Film festivals are a touchy subject. Many filmmakers make a film thinking all they have to do is submit their work to a major festival and soon they will be rich and famous. Well it just doesn't work that way. If you think you can make a low-budget film with no connections and no stars, submit it to Sundance and be accepted, you're wrong. Plain and simple, Sundance is an insiders game, and if you're not an insider you won't be invited to the party." Is It Time For Festivals to Pay?" Independent filmmakers traveling on the festival circuit gain much from the experience. Aside from often receiving free travel, filmmakers make useful contacts, they learn important lessons about marketing and publicity and they get their film seen by paying audiences receiving vital feedback about their work. But the ultimate goal for a filmmaker taking their movie on the festival circuit is to close the all-important distribution deal. The disappointing truth is that most films playing at festivals become ³cine-orphans,² films left without distribution. For most, the festival tour ends with a wealth of valuable experiences, and an empty bank account." However, there may be a silver lining in the hopeless pursuit of distribution as the article explains.. Once you've decided that the festival route is for you, the question of how to locate a festival event appropriate for your particular production is asked.. There are many online resources to help you find an event appropriate for your work. Here is a brief list of festival directories and databases:

FEATURED STUDIO OR SCHOOL:Vancouver film School - MEDIA ARTS Starting with this issue etiehr a school or studio will be featured in this section of the newsletter. This week we present the Vancouver Film School (VFS). The VFS, located in Vancouver, B.C., offers programs focusing on industries that use moving images, graphics, sound and text as fundamental components for communicating information and story. VFS programs, as a matter of design, regularly and continually evolve in response to current industry methodology, technology and need. Using production creation as the core learning engine, VFS imparts superior technical training in a measurably accelerated time frame. VFS graduates are preferred by industry employers or become industry employers themselves. Programs of study include: film, 3D and 2D animation, writing, and sound design. TECHNOLOGY NEWS: FilmSound.org. Hosted and maintained by Sven E. Carlsson, a Swedish educator, this Web site is an excellent source of information about that one element of filmmaking that is sometimes overlooked due to its ubiquity: sound. Persons curious to read a brief overview of film sound will want to start with an essay titled "An Introduction to Film Sound," by Jane Knowles Marshall. After this, they may want to look over the glossary on the right-hand side of the main page, which features definitions and explanations of terms such as "Ambiance," "Foley," and "Production Sound." The sites other highlights include numerous essays by Oscar-winning sound designer Walter Murch (who won for The English Patient and Apocalypse Now) and Randy Thom (who won for The Right Stuff and has been nominated six times in total). Along with other essays on the use of sound in Indian cinema and the history of film sound, there are 10 essays (and sound samples) on the use of sound and sound effect design in the Star Wars trilogy. Two companies, Logitech and Seiko, have developed pens that can be used to translate your handwriting into a computer. Here's how the $170 Logitech Io pen works: A pinhole camera next to the tip of the pen records your movements as you write on paper, and a microprocessor then turns this information into handwritten notes and diagrams (as many 40 pages worth). Later, you can insert the pen into a small desktop stand which communicates to a Windows personal computer through a USB connector. The handwriting is stored as a dumb graphic, but you can make simple editing changes and can e-mail the notes to someone else. Moore's Law Good For Another 10 years: The theory espoused by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore that the number of transistors on a computer chip would double every 18 months or so -- is still valid, says Moore, who sees "no apparent roadblocks" for at least another decade. "It gets complicated and expensive, but the technological solutions seem to be thereŠ Even if we get to the point where we can't squeeze any more [transistors] in there, we'll be putting billions of transistors on a chip. It's certainly not the end of creativity in the industry." Moore predicted that growth in the semiconductor industry would equal growth in the world's gross domestic product by 2017 if the industry continues at its current pace. Incandescent light bulbs, neon tubes and fluorescent lamps are expected to go the way of the gas lamp: into the history books. The emerging "solid-state lighting" industry, based on LED (light-emitting diode) microchips is expected to make its presence felt in the general home and office lighting market as early as 2007. Currently used mainly in large-scale projects such as the NASDAQ sign in Times Square, Chicago's Goodman Theatre, or the White House Christmas tree, offer huge performance advantages. An example: an LED traffic light consumes 80% less electricity and lasts ten times longer than a traditional light. Playing computer games can be beneficial, say researchers studying the complex social interactions inherent in the popular online multiplayer shoot-em-up Counter-Strike. Professor Talmadge Wright and colleagues at Loyola University in Chicago say that Counter-Strike is much more than just racking up "kills," with the strategies and tactics used by many regular players approaching the complexity of those used in chess. And although much of the banter reflects the typical trashtalk of teenage boys, it's a mistake to dismiss the gamers as misguided misanthropes. "The most common emotion when people are playing is laughter," says Wright. In fact, games like Counter-Strike that rely on trust and cooperation give rise to strong communities and friendships, he adds. "It gives people an option of actively participating in some kind of fantasy role they could not do in real life that allows them to play with their own feelings. It is an area that's bricked off from everyday life that you can enter and leave at will. It offers you a way to play with things you may be scared of in a safe way where there are very few consequences." For these reasons the games are good for players, says Wright, who suggests that many studies of game-playing have been skewed by hidden agendas. "There's a cultural motif that underlies the critiques that go on around this, the idea of mindless activity is given short shrift in culture where productivity is given the highest praise." Surveying the Digital Future, On January 29, 2003, the third report of the UCLA Center for Communication Policy's Internet Project was released. Many aspects of online behavior are analyzed in the latest report, revealing several trends in Internet usage. It considers the effects of the Internet on a wide range of people, including consumers, children, and general users. It also discusses how people communicate and gather information online. In the war simulation game "Gulf War 2" (found at www.idleworm.com), toppling Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein is the easy part -- it's what comes next that challenges players' wits. The game starts with Baghdad's quick fall, but then leads players through a frightening chain of events, including an Iraqi anthrax attack on Israel, a retaliatory nuclear strike, revolt in Saudi Arabia, and a Kurdish coup in northern Iraq. Players assume the role of President Bush, receiving regular briefings on the burgeoning crises from Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, and national security adviser Condoleezza Rice. "This is a projection of the most likely outcome of a new war in the Gulf," says a notice on the Web site, and game developer Dermot O'Connor notes that he designed "Gulf War 2" to highlight the risks of war. "There is only one deliberate outcome. It didn't make sense to give people the idea that they could avoid the worst." O'Connor says he drew his source material from interviews and articles in the Atlantic Monthly, the Washington Post, the New York Times, The Times of London, The Guardian and the Australian Sunday Herald. About 20,000 people play the game every day. (Reuters/CNN.com 10 Feb 2003) http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/fun.games/02/10/iraq.game.reut/index.html Source:NewsScanDaily. Film and Music Groups Target Workplace Pirates. The Recording Industry Association of America and the Motion Picture Association of America have published a guide for employers, asking major corporations to curb illicit file-swapping by workers on company time. The guide, titled "A Corporate Policy Guide to Copyright Use and Security on the Internet," requests that businesses advise employees against copyright abuse using corporate computer systems and warns that such abuse is illegal, damages corporate reputations, increases corporate network security risks, and can put organizations at risk of legal liability. The guide cites a case in which an Arizona company paid a $1 million settlement in April 2002 to the RIAA after workers were found to be accessing and distributing thousands of music files via the company server.
