Proscenia Newsletter: Events - News - Jobs
"
Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it." (Henry David Thoreau)

February 23, 2003

I'm sorry if anyone had a problem accessing Ken's recommended Macromedia tutorial site last week. Dreamweaver added some additional "%" code when I inserted the web address. The correct URL is: http://www.macromedia.com/desdev/tip/archive.html Many of the tutorial movies are 6 or 7 megabytes, so it works best if you have a DSL or cable modem. The movies can be copied to your hard drive if you have QuickTime pro. Ken has also suggested that those interested in game design check out this Shockwave directory listing to try some interesting 3D games. They're in German, but they aren't hard to figure out, says Ken.

Ken recently posted a note that Avid now has a free version of their DV editing software. "Perfect for DV camera owners, students, aspiring filmmakers and event videographers - virtually anyone interested in video editing - Avid Free DV is an easy, free way to join the Avid family and learn the industry-standard editing interface and toolset used by more professionals than any other video editing solution. Avid Free DV is a streamlined version of Avid's award-winning video editing software with capabilities that include two video tracks, four audio tracks, basic trimming and editing functionality, and up to two streams of real-time effects. When you're ready for even more horsepower, you can step up to Avid's professional line of products including Avid Xpress DV software and Media Composer systems, and take advantage of the fully functional Avid editing interface and toolset. Scheduled to be available mid-year 2003, Avid Free DV is planned to support both Macintosh OS X and Windows XP platforms. If you'd like to receive updated information on Avid Free DV as it becomes available, fill out an online form below and you'll be e-mailed l updates."

Please pass this newsletter onto other students or individuals you know who are interested in computer based media and communication. And, as always, if you would like to be removed from this list please let me know.

DISCUSSION:Getting Involved

An earlier Proscenia Newsletter discussed the value of networking. I included, at that time, a short list of Oregon based associations that one might join. Not only are such organizations good for networking but they also provide the opportunity for extended learning. I've expanded the list and include it here for your reference. It is important to know that similar organizations exist in all larger urban area where you might eventually find work The description for each organization has been copied from online sources written by those organizations.

Association of Independent Video & Filmmakers. (AIVF)
Maybe the best description of the Portland AIVF Salon (know locally as The Indie Film Group) is that it is a paragon of informality. After all, the group was founded in an impromptu style, with the very loose mission of "togetherness." News of the group has largely been spread by word-of-mouth. The tone of the meetings is as casual as the reputation of the laid-back Pacific Northwest. But in spite of (or maybe because of) this relaxed atmosphere, it all seems to work quite well. Portland has a growing independent film community with a strong contingent of world-class animators (among them Chel White, Rose Bond, Joan Graz, Joanna Priestly, Jim Blashfield, Will Vinton). It also has a number of busy documentary and experimental filmmakers (like Kelley Baker and Miranda July, respectively), and even spawned some feature folks (the most well-known of whom is director Gus Van Sant, who those in the know simply refer to as "Gus."). There is no real hierarchy, no officers, nor any long-range plan in the Portland Indie Film Group. It's admittedly low-key. We usually screen something as a group, sometimes a completed work, sometimes a work-in-progress and, depending on the needs of the filmmaker, we have some sort of session -- critique, pats on the back, suggestions about marketing or distribution, grousing and commiserating.

Computer-Human Interaction Forum of Oregon (CHIFOO)

TECHNOLOGY NEWS:

Google Acquires Blogger Co. Google has cut a deal to acquire Pyra Labs, a small group of Web developers responsible for developing the software used for the personal publishing phenomenon known as blogging (from Weblogging). Weblogs are a form of grassroots online diary publishing that enable users to update their personal Web sites with a series of brief postings, arranged chronologically. The acquisition signals Google's latest step in its strategy to move beyond the search engine market into publishing. Last year it developed and launched Google News, and the two years ago it purchased Deja.com's Usenet, a massive archive of Web-based discussion groups. Copy Protection Effirts Misguided, Says Lessig. Lawmakers will be making a big mistake if they bow to Hollywood pressure and enact new copyright-protection legislation based on today's Internet use patterns, says Stanford University professor Lawrence Lessig. Currently, millions of consumers are downloading music to their PCs because slow dialup connections make it impractical to stream content quickly to a variety of devices. "In the future, it will be easier to pay for subscription services than to be an amateur database administrator who moves content from device to device. We're legislating against a background of the Internet's current architecture of content distribution, and this is a fundamental mistake," Lessig told participants at the Digital Rights Management Summit held at Intel headquarters. From time to time I've come across material on the web that is of value to those just beginning to define a career in media. Of course, as I have in the past, strongly recommend the Boston College's Guide: Careers In Multimedia. To this I would add a few new resources as well from Skills Net. Skills Net has an extensive collection of material related to working in the media industry. I have selected the following material for reference here, but I encourage you to visit the Skills Net site for more information.

Jobs in Animation and Digital Effects. Jobs in this industry are organized into families. These job families include visual development, storyboard, layout, painting, traditional animation, and computer art. The traditional animation family includes two sub-families: character/effects and clean-up. The computer art family includes three sub-families: 2-D, 3-D, and technical. This guide outlines the various jobs one should expect in the field and the requirements for each.

There are many who want to work in the film and television industry and have as a goal working in Hollywood. The short article Breaking Into Film. by Kenna McHugh explores this option and how to find work. "As in every industry, the best Hollywood jobs usually don't show up in the "Help Wanted" sections of the trades -- you're much more likely to find those openings through networking. However, looking through the trades is still the quickest way to start searching for a way to break into the business. If you see an ad that you find interesting, there's certainly no reason why you shouldn't respond to it. After all, what do you have to lose? "

How does a talented artist get noticed in a highly competitive job market? Unfortunately the answer is often marketing. In the business world today, it's not enough to be good - you have to sell yourself. Here are some tips to consider when preparing for your next job interview.
