"It is difficult to produce a television documentary that is both incisive and probing when every twelve minutes
one is interrupted by twelve dancingrabbits singing about toilet paper." (Rod Serling)

March 2, 2003

Have you ever thought about a rewarding career teaching multimedia, film/video, or broadcasting? One can teach in a Community College with a masters degree and at a University with an MFA or doctorate. At the end of this issue's "jobs" section is a number of faculty positions open at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. Some, on this list, qualify quite well. Others interested in teaching should look at the expected competencies to help in planning for a future career in teaching.

I find that locating employment opportunities for the "jobs" section of this newsletter a challenge each week. But I've discovered some strategies that makes the task easier.

Instead of looking for specific job classifications such as "graphic designer" or "web designer" I use keywords such as flash, animation, DVD, web design, graphics, and video. I also search "All Jobs". This casts a much broader net over the job market and I often find opportunities under the strangest titles such as Print Shop Manager which might have as the primary responsibilities the design and development of web site material.

Cast the broadest net possible as you search for work and then narrow your search until you find that right position.

Please pass this newsletter onto other students or individuals you know who are interested in multimedia and communication. And, as always, if you would like to be removed from this list please let me know.

Cheers, Gary

William Gruber of Portland invented the handheld 3D slide-viewing gizmo known as the View Master in 1940. A special camera took two pictures with each lens being approximately a "nose width" apart. The View Master viewer facilitated the user's ability to see the 3D image taken by the camera. Hundreds of travelogues, educational reels, and cartoons were created for this popular entertainment medium and distributed on small round discs. A 3D projector was available in the 1950's for group viewing. Audience members wore special 3D glasses. The View Master is still available today. Check out the View-Master Resource site for more information on early Oregon based innovation in 3D media.

DISCUSSION: PHOTO SEARCH ENGINES

Have you ever tried to draw an object only to realize you have no idea what it looks like. Going on line and finding images that you can use as models is facilitated by accessing a number of useful search engines. Here is a short list of good online resources to use:

AltaVista - Image Search. You can search image, video, and audio resources on Alta Vista. Images appear as thumbnails which are linked to the original web pages on which the images were located. The engine searches for jpg, gif, and other image formats.

AllTheWeb.com. This site generates small thumbnails of found images with links to original source pages.

The Amazing Picture Machine. The search engine asks for search words and then creates a list of pictures on the Internet that match your words. Each picture has a clickable link and a short description to help you decide which pictures to look at. Source: North Central Regional Technology in Education Consortium

Ditto.com. To search visually enter a phrase and click. Like other engines this provides thumbnail images linked to original sources. It also provides images of products related to your search. For example a search for elephants will provide visual reference to elephant art prints and sculpture being marketed by commercial supporters of this search engine. Source: Ditto.com

Claims to be the most comprehensive image search engine on the web. The engine provides large thumbnail images linked to original sources. Source: Google.

Lycos Multimedia Search. Another web search engine that looks not only for image files but also video and sound. Source: Lycos

Picture Search and Finder. Contains annotated descriptions of both photo search engines and image databases. Source:Cornado Internet Consulting, Applications and Solutions.

WebLens. Lots of powerful and sophisticated tools are available for text searches, and great strides are being made in the area of image search technology. Some image search engines are just large databases. Other experimental work like the resources listed on this site are under R&D operate on the principle of sophisticated color and pattern analysis. .

WebSEEk. Content-based Image and Video Search and Catalog Tool for the Web. Source: WebSeek

A web search engine that provides access to image files located on web pages. Source: Yahoo

Enjoy your exploration. And please remember, most online images are copyrighted. So, it is best not to copy and use.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS:

Monster.com warns Job-Seekers About Potential ID Theft. Monster.com, a job-seeker's Web service whose database holds a quarter of a million resumes, has issued an e-mail message to its customers warning that "regrettably, from time to time, false job postings are listed online and used to illegally collect personal information from unsuspecting job-seekers." What should job-seekers do to protect themselves? Monster.com advises them not to give out their social security, credit card or bank account numbers, not to disclose marital status or other information not relevant to their job qualifications, and to be especially careful when responding to job-postings from prospective employers outside the country. The Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval, located within the computer science department at the University of Massachusetts, is dedicated to "developing tools that provide effective and efficient access to large, heterogeneous, distributed, text and multimedia databases." To this end, the Center conducts a number of research activities, along with some rather compelling demonstration projects that visitors may want to examine. One of their demonstration projects located online is Acrophile, which allows users to search a database containing over 51,000 acronyms. Funded in part by the National Science Foundation, the Center has also been able to make a number of their working papers available online. The papers are divided into thematic areas, including information retrieval, with the series extending back to 1987. The site concludes with information about the Center's continuing research projects, personnel, and membership materials. Copyright Internet Scout Project 1.

SEGA Surveys Suitors. Sega, which last week announced its plan to merge with pinball-machine maker Sammy, is now enjoying the attentions of Microsoft and Electronic Arts, as the two separately explore the possibility of buying part or all of the ailing videogame maker. For Microsoft, the acquisition would give its Xbox console access to exclusive game titles, particularly high-quality sports games, which are one of the most popular and fastest-growing game categories. In addition, Sega's acquisition could open doors in Japan, where a dearth of Xbox titles that appeal to Japanese gamers has left Microsoft with stacks of unsold inventory. Meanwhile, from Electronic Arts' perspective, a Sega acquisition would give EA a boost in Japan, and would at the same time eliminate a competitor in the sports games category. Spokespeople at both companies declined to comment. (Wall Street Journal 28 Feb 2003) http://online.wsj.com/article/0,,SB1046381423691854663.djm,00.html (sub req'd) Source:NewsScanDaily

E-Commerce Purcahses Overwhelm Campus Mailrooms. Overflowing mailrooms, crammed with packages destined for free-spending students, represent the latest campus crisis attributable to the Internet. Fueled by 24-hour high-speed connections and parents' credit cards, college students are spending like crazy -- on clothes, furniture, big-screen TVs, bicycles, computers, car tires and exercise benches. Brown University mailroom manager Fred Yattaw notes that his staff last year processed 130,000 parcels for a student body of 5,700. And since 1995, the number of packages delivered to students at Occidental College in Los Angeles has quadrupled, says Occidental CIO Thomas Slobko: "The average [number of parcels] received per day has gone from 30-ish to 120-ish, and this is a very small place." Meanwhile, Lee Rainey, director of the Pew Internet and American Life Project, says students' passionate consumerism is a hallmark of contemporary campus culture. "E-commerce has met campus life. Today's college freshmen and sophomores were born right about when the first PC was marketed. They don't know any other life." And while some schools report feeling conflicted over questionable deliveries such as cases of wine and hookahs, Brown's Yattaw says his No. 1 priority is moving the merchandise: "We don't question what students receive as long as they come and get it." Two different Strategies for Makers of Online Games. In one corner of the ring is Microsoft; in the other, a partnership of Sony, IBM, and grid-computing company Butterfly.net. Whereas Microsoft is using its own technology exclusively for online games, the Sony-IBM-Butterfly team uses a layer of software that was created by Butterfly.net and is based on the open-source software standard known as "Open Grid Services architecture." The Sony-IBM-Butterfly effort has introduced grid computing to the consumer market, providing a way for multitudes of online players to enjoy fast, realistic graphics with fewer glitches. In the judgment of Curt Benefield, the chief executive of the company that makes the multiplayer science fiction game VibeForce, "This will standardize the industry and put everyone on a more equal footing." Blogging Comes To Harvard. Harvard University has given software developer David Winer a fellowship and the assignment of leading the Blogs at Harvard Initiative and showing Harvard faculty and students how to create and manage "blogs" (short for Web logs) on subjects of their choice. Winer says that blogging will ultimately "be a basic skill like e-mail or using a word processor. It's going to be like writing, and that's why I'm at a university now. We'll teach all the students and the teachers how to do it, and in turn they'll teach their students. So we're getting ready for the long haul here." Asserting that "in some areas, like tech reporting, the Web logs have largely replaced the professionals," he adds: "Journalism is a high calling, but it's really no more than points of view on what's taking place. I think the pros are going to use this tech, and they are doing it more and more." Winer predicts that blogging will have a profound effect on education, and says: "I've already gotten e-mail from tons of educational institutions that want to be up on what we're doing."
