Film and video producers should take note of the Ashland Independent Film Festival, April 3 through 7. This is an intense, five-day event that actively promotes dialogue between filmmaker and audience in an intimate setting. Festival organizers believe that the screenings, and the discussions that follow, illuminate the human condition and explore themes or issues that are most relevant to our culture. Ashland is home of the Oregon Shakespearean Festival and is one of the most art oriented cities in the Northwest. Speaking of film exhibitions have you seen the Oneminute Movie site? This European web site has been established for the Internet presentation of one minute movies created by youth under the age of 20. A one minute time constraint demands sharpness of eye and speed of thought from both viewer and maker. It is an ideal form with which to experiment. The length of the minute urges the creators to form their ideas clearly but also gives them optimal freedom. Oneminute Movie is supported in part by UNICF and the European Cultural Foundation. If one minute movies are too long for you how about 10 seconds how about taking in The Ten Second Films Competition The medium is digital video, the submission period ends MARCH 10, and first prize is a thousand bucks. What can you do in ten seconds? Visit the web site to view, create, and submit As the academic term comes to an end students are rushing to complete projects before Spring break. Proscenia Interns have one more week and then our wonderful team of people will depart with some graduating and others moving on to new experiences. We thank all those who have been with us this term for their fine work: Tom Nevin, Cory Otjen, Kanade Sato, Tami Schamp, and Josh Taylor. Please
pass this newsletter onto other students or individuals who are interested
in multimedia and communication. And, as always, if you would like to
be removed from this list please let me know. |

DISCUSSION: Browser Compatibility Making web pages that work seems like a simple concept. Open up Dreamweaver and go to it - right? Well, yes and no. It is always surprising what can go wrong between concept, development, distribution, and downloading on the user's computer. Some advice I recently received from JQ Johnson of the University of Oregon FITT center is of value. Browsers will often accept and try to display Web pages even if they're not written using " legal" HTML code. This usually "means that the browser will try to make educated guesses about what you probably meant. The problem is that different browsers (or even different versions of the same browser) will make different guesses about the same illegal construct; worse, if your HTML is really pathological, the browser could get hopelessly confused and produce a mangled mess, or even crash." This is why you want to make sure that your pages are "legal" and the best way to do that is by running your documents through an HTML validators Specific standards for the coding of web pages have been developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). This group researches, debates, and then comes to an agreement on what code is to be used for web page developed. This is issued as a standard that is adopted world wide. By following these standards your web pages are "legal" and will appear the same on most browsers when displayed. To assure the application of these standards the W3C organization provides a free validation service. Johnson requires that all web pages developed for the University library be validated using the W3C validator page at ( http://validator.w3.org ). It quickly checks and provides you with feedback about the compliance of your HTML and XHTML documents to W3C Recommendations and other standards. The UO Library has standardized on HTML 4.01 transitional or xhtml transitional as their HTML versions. Using the validator makes sure that the underlying code is valid and web pages will play most anywhere on the Internet. Even though there are a variety of tools for looking at issues of browser compatibility- there's no substitute for actually testing. This can be done by taking a look at your web pages on a variety of Mac and PC platforms using various versions of web browsers. You could also download different browsers on your computer though some really hog the memory. The most popular browsers are: Microsoft Internet Explorer , Netscape , Opera , and iCab . Another free resource that I like is W3C's link checker service (http://validator.w3.org/checklink ). This is especially useful if your page has many links to other web sites. We all know how quickly sites die on the web and this checker will tell you what links you have to outside resources have changed or died. There are also a few sites that offer online testing services for a fee with the best known being NetMechanic. This site was once free as the organization tested its beta versions and I used it often. It now is a professional fee for service and does well in keeping your web site in top shape. Do a google search for "browser compatibility testing" to find other tools for web site maintenance.

Multimedia Professional Program. In a field that seems to change faster than a five-day forecast, itšs almost impossible to keep up. Impossible, but essential. Wešre always standing on the edge, leaning out just a little farther, trying to keep our skill sets sharp when every day therešs something newer, faster, cooler. Therešs a growing demand for professionals who can pull it off - who bring both creativity and digital savvy to a production team or a business. This is why the PSU, Multimedia Professional Program was created. Centrally located the program offers Portland area professions with three training programs:

TECHNOLOGY NEWS: Why Is This News? Doesn't It Happen Every Day? A Colorado businessman was arrested earlier this week at his Sportsman's Bar & Restaurant for firing four bullets into his laptop, which had crashed just one too many times. After spending a night in jail, the man was temporarily released but may face charges of felony menacing, reckless endangerment, and the prohibited use of weapons. (AP/USA Today 5 Mar 2003) http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2003-03-05-laptop-rage_x.htm Source:NewsScanDaily Texas Instruments Unveils New Cinema Cip. Texas Instruments raising the bar on digital image display with its new 2K chipset designed to power a high-end digital cinema projector at 2K resolution, or a minimum of 2,000 lines of resolution on the big screen. Studio executives say they're impressed with the new technology, but are reserving final judgment until testing by Digital Cinema Initiatives, a consortium of seven major studios dedicated to establishing technical standards, is complete. Industry sources say DCI is developing a specification requiring that digital cinema projection begin at a minimum of 2K resolution. Digital cinema promises a higher quality visual experience combined with lower costs -- studio execs say they could save up to $1 billion in annual print production and distribution costs, once the changeover to digital cinema is accomplished. (Los Angeles Times 3 Mar 2003) http://shorl.com/dafytubronoli Source:NewsScanDaily Right to Possess or Right to Create? Which Card Trumps? At the end of a recent mock trial sponsored by the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology to debate issues of copyright in the digital age, the judge urged the participants: "Go back to work and clear up this mess for us. And don't take too long to do it because we're losing ground fast." It's a case of "digital rights management" (technology to place locks on DVDs and other copyrighted material to prevent their being misappropriated) versus an innovator's ability to make technological advances by taking a competitor's products apart to understand how they work. Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), who is introducing a bill to amend the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act, says, "We have ceded too much power to copyright owners. People are afraid to proceed on innovative measures." (New York Times 2 Mar 2003) http://shorl.com/bapog Source:NewsScanDaily Flat Panel Disply Industry Moves to China. The flat-panel display industry, now primarily concentrated in Taiwan and South Korea, will start relocating high-end TFT (thin film transistor) screen production facilities to mainland China over the next three years, says Thomas Edman, president and CEO of Applied Films, which does all of its manufacture and sale of coated glass through a 50-50 joint venture with Nippon Sheet Glass in Suzhou, China. "The U.S. industry is long gone, and the Japanese have moved the bulk of their high-end production to Taiwan and Korea. I think it's inevitable that that will go to China One of the reasons I say two to three years is that the materials industry [that supplies display manufacturers] has not yet cemented their infrastructure out here. But the same drivers are there. Eventually the industry will come here." Edman points to a recent announcement by China's BOE Technology Group that it plans to build a so-called fifth generation TFT-LCD production line in Beijing by 2005. BOE also recently acquired the TFT-LCD business of South Korea's Hynix Semiconductor. (Wall Street Journal 4 Mar 2003) http://online.wsj.com/article/0,,SB1046779551126936880.djm,00.html (sub req'd) Source:NewsScanDaily AOL Seeks to "Monetize" Instant Messaging. About the only good news for AOL recently has been its spectacular success with its instant messaging service, the world's most popular electronic communications tool. Every day, about 2.3 billion instant messages are sent via AOL, and about 40% of all Americans aged 14-24 use the AOL IM service. The only problem is, it's free. And while AOL isn't considering charging for its IM service or burdening it with advertising, company insiders are putting together targeted pitches to capitalize on the demographics of the AOL instant messaging community. At the same time, the company is pushing IM into the workplace, where employees often use the service to exchange messages without supervision from their company's computer administrators. "This is really an enormous untapped audience online," says Stephen Kim, research director of ComScore Media Matrix. "It is a big audience, and it is really active, but it is really hard to turn that into dollars." Nevertheless, AOL plans to keep on trying: "There is a very significant effort to build new revenue streams and businesses over the next one to two years," says a high-ranking AOL official. "If we have done nothing two years from now, we will have a problem." (Washington Post 3 Mar 2003) http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A30944-2003Mar2.html Source:NewsScanDaily
