Thought for today: "Words -- so innocent and powerless as they are, as standing in a dictionary, how potent for good and evil they become in the hands of one who knows how to combine them. --"

Up Front:

Spring is slowly arriving here in the Pacific Northwest. Daylight once again fills my workspace on Sunday mornings as I prepare this publication for web distribution. The sun has returned to shinning on the wall above my workstation and I'm tempted to close the window blind so I can better see the computer screen. Yet, there is something nice about the coming of Spring that I'm not yet inclined to block out the welcomed light after a long wet, cold, winter.

Three weeks ago I had the pleasure of taking a cameraless animation workshop with direct film animator Devon Damonte. The idea of creating motion graphics by working directly on 16mm film leader was not new to me in that I taught this technique when I began my career at the University of Oregon in 1967. What caught my attention was that this form of cinema continues to have an international following and that many today work as film artist by drawing, scratching, and printing directly on film stock. This week's Random Links provides access to articles and web sites that I hope readers will find of interest related to cameraless animation. It is a unique medium in which a select few around the world are engaged.

This week's items of interest:

• A recent Scout Report listed three web sites of possible interest to our readers. The first is the Ad Council that ha,s since 1942, "... introduced some rather familiar slogans into American culture, such as Smokey Bear's Only You can Prevent Forest Fires and Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk. Along with viewing print ads for campaigns ...visitors can also view some well-known television spots, including those dealing with AIDS and McGruff the Crime Dog"

A second recommendation is the Bright Lights Film Journal. This online journal is "...a popular-academic hybrid of movie analysis, history, and commentary, looking at classic and commercial, independent, exploitation, and international film from a wide range of vantage points from the aesthetic to the political." It contains pieces by a number of persons, including independent writers, film critics, and freelance journalists. "The interviews section is quite strong, and contains candid pieces with Frederico Fellini, Robert Wise, and John Woo."

Not every person merging onto the information superhighway is there for such laudable reasons. WiredSafety offers help for online victims of cybercrime and harassment, educational materials about cybercrime, and assistance for law enforcement worldwide on preventing and investigating cybercrimes.WiredSafety also offers Wired-Ed, which is offered free of charge and allows users to learn more about surfing the net safely.

• Radio station KCRW, Santa Monica, California, provides an online archive of its program,"The Treatment". "A 'treatment,' in Hollywood parlance, is a concise overview of a screenplay. On this series New York Times film critic Elvis Mitchell turns the tables and gives the 'treatment' to some of the most influential and innovative forces creating movies and popular art and entertainment."

Just a few of the online conversations you can hear include:

Filmmakers John Lasseter and Andrew Stanton (Toy Story, Monsters Inc., Toy Story 2, A Bug's Life) discussing their most recent collaboration.

Peter Jackson, whose third installment in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Return of the King, is up for 11 Academy Awards.

Peter Weir, whose many films include The Year of Living Dangerously, Witness, Dead Poets Society, The Truman Show, and his current film Master and Commander: Far Side of the World.

Director Tim Burton (Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Planet of the Apes), and Big Fish.

• Jason Berry’s essay "Ignorance or Arrogance: What Hollywood Has to Learn from the Extinction of the Incan Empire," is featured on this month's Braintrustdv.com site. His essay is primarily concerned with the degree of denial exemplified by Hollywood in the face of ensuing digital distribution. Berry's looks backward and forward, breezily condensing recent video and music history in an effort to make careful predictions about the near future. In an era of esoteric writing about new media, this essay embodies the conservative conjecturing of those who prefer hard facts to daydreams. And the central fact is: digital distribution is “coming soon.”

Also featured is an interview with Indian director Ram Madhvani. The article notes that the digital revolution is not just threatening Hollywood--it's threatening mainstream film industries all over the world. In this interview, "Let's Talk: Bollywood Coup d'Etat," Braintrustdv chats with Madhvani, the first filmmaker who utilized small-format DV technology to shoot a feature film intended for mainstream distribution in India. In many ways a guerrilla effort, "Let's Talk" startled Shringar, the largest film distributor in India, by opening to full houses in Mumbai (Bombay) in December, 2002.

• Canadian media educator Barry Duncan's popular Barry's Bulletin is "... a treasure trove for teachers: lessons and activities on current, media-related events; reviews of recommended resources; upcoming events of interest to media educators; and quotes from experts in Canada and around the world." In the current edition Barry discusses Super Bowl Antics as a timely teachable moment and provides food for thought on celebrities in the media. The Bulletin has been exploring topical events and issues from young people's popular culture since fall 2003.

• The Reel Teens USA Film/Video Festival is seeking submissions on a variety of subjects. Applications and additional information are available online. And the Olympia Film Society is hosting the first Annual Olympia Youth-Teen New Media Fest, May 7-9th, 2004. OYTNMF is a weekend long celebration of teen culture.Download entry forms from the festival's web site.

The Search Engine Tutorial for Web Designers explains, how to design your pages, keeping the search engines in mind, and why it is necessary to do so. "Knowledge is a powerful weapon and having knowledge of what a search engine is going to do with your page, while you are designing it, allows you to build a better resulting web page."

• Finally, check out these informative web sites for personal enjoyment and exploration. The Lewis and Clark National Bicentennial Exhibition online and the NASA Sun-Earth Viewer. And if these sites aren't enough to keep you busy try your hand at balancing a state budget in MassBalance. This online game challenges players to balance a $23 billion state budget with a $3 billion deficit. Learn what happens when you make deep spending cuts. Master this game and you may find your self in a new consulting role traveling from state to state (starting here in Oregon) solving budget crisis.

RANDOM LINKS:Cameraless Film Animation

Direct or cameraless animation is the process of creating moving images by working directly onto motion picture film stock by hand. According to Devon Damonte, "Various graphics are set in motion by using the film material as a vehicle for a 'moving canvas'. Techniques may include (but aren't limited to) painting, scratching, adhering thin semi-transparent materials to the film with tape or glue, ironing to transfer inks from plastic, and various other strange and obsessive methods not recommended by the manufacture."

DISCUSSION FEATURE: In Their Words - Dreams and Reality

By Gary Ferrington

An apprehensive feeling came over me while I was standing on the auditorium stage waiting to receive my undergraduate degree. I had trained to be a concert pianist and composer, but was I skilled enough to make it in the world outside the academic setting in which I had safely pursued my dreams? I was realizing that the world beyond the classroom experience often, modifies or nullifies our youthful dreams.

That long-ago experience was recalled when I received a letter from Aaron Graham, a former Proscenia Intern, who wrote:

"It's amazing what changes one can go through after college. When I was in school, it was all about the 'dream job' and how fun it would be to work as a game artist or animator. Now that I've graduated, it's not about how fun the job is, it's about the stability of the job and where I see myself in the future as far as advancement.

I would have jumped at the chance to work at a local game development company when I was in college. But it just isn't about myself anymore. It's about having a job that is still in the industry, perhaps not be as 'fun' as anticipated, but still creative, pays great, and is stable enough so that I don't' have to worry about losing my house or not being able to take care of my family."

Aaron's comments reminded me of all the dreams I have heard as a teacher and wondered if others had stories to tell about their transition from student dream to work reality. What was that transition like and might the telling of their stories help those now on the verge of graduating. I asked a couple of graduates if they would write about their experiences. I am pleased to have the following contributions.

We begin with Nick Falbo who is a University of Oregon graduate in multimedia.

"When I was in school I studied everything I could. This was a wonderful time for me to explore many different subjects and learn and incredible amount. In school we were encouraged to cross departmental boundaries and acquire a broad skill set. But after graduating and entering the real world, that proved to be less than useful.

The recession had caused a high level of unemployment, and businesses were too busy trying to stay in business to be planning on new growth. This meant that very few were hiring entry-level positions, and when they were, there were plenty of overqualified unemployed people in line to fill those spots. Combine that with the realization that I really didn't know what I wanted to do for a living. Did I want to work in video production? In animation? Graphic Design? Web design? And even if I knew what I wanted to do, was I even competitive in those fields? My portfolio was too broad and not focused. When I pared it down to a specific field, it was inadequate and didn't show my true abilities.

I think the first dream all students have upon graduation is that they will get a "real" job right away. From the experience of myself and my friends this was definitely NOT happening. The reality of the situation is that most students will get a day job upon graduation. Something focused on subsistence while the your outside time is spent focusing on the goal of the "real" job.

In my case I first needed to decide what that real job was. Out of all the things I studied in school, what was my passion, and what career opportunities are there for me. The second thing I needed to do was improve my portfolio and make personal/professional connections in the local area. The portfolio is required to prove you can do what you say you can, and the networking is required to find out who to show your portfolio to. It took me about a year to do, but I eventually reached some success on my path toward a career. I've recently quit my day job and have been able to live on freelance work in my chosen field. With any luck, the company I'm contracting for will hire me on full-time as an in house employee. That is my new dream."

GAME ACTION AT YOUR FINGERTIPS Forget the old-fashioned joystick -- game developers are beginning to offer alternative products that control the play by listening to your voice, watching your movements and even monitoring your pulse. For example, a new game called "Wild Divine" comes with three plastic biofeedback clips called Magic Rings, designed to monitor a player's heart rate and perspiration. Players attempt a series of virtual tasks, such as juggling balls, by willing themselves to relax and thereby lower their heart rate. If they get flustered and tense up, the balls drop. Mastering the game involves learning how to control your breathing and remain calm in the face of stress. "We're able to keep a really close eye on what's going on in your body," says "Wild Divine" co-creator Kurt Smith. Meanwhile, in an upcoming game called "Lifeline" by Konami of America, players shout commands into a microphone to control their on-screen character. Creators say the game is designed to respond to a lexicon of 5,000 words and about 100,000 phrases like "dodge and reload." And PowerGrid Fitness is launching a $695 kiloWatt controller that resembles a fitness machine and works with existing game consoles, including PlayStation 2, Xbox and Windows-based PCs. The device is based on a haptic interface that responds to players' touch. The harder a player pushes on the controller, the faster the race car speeds around the track. "Video games are addictive," says PowerGrid co-founder Greg Merril. "To be able to leverage that addiction in a healthy way was a very compelling idea for us." PAYROLL CARDS REPLACING PAYCHECKS FOR MANY U.S. WORKER.S A number of U.S. employers are replacing traditional paychecks with payroll cards that employees can use to get money out of ATM machines (or use them as debit cards to make store purchases). The payroll cards are intended mainly for workers who don't have bank accounts, and some major employers -- such as Sears, McDonald's, Blockbuster and Domino's -- already use them. A survey by the American Payroll Association reports that over the course of the next year about half of all employers will be evaluating the benefits of payroll cards for their companies, but the new system also has its critics, and consumer advocate Ed Mierzwinski says, "We see payroll cards contributing to a second-class system of consumers. The companies are just trying to save money. Companies ought to leverage their power to force banks to offer affordable accounts."(USA Today 15 Feb 2004) http://www.usatoday.com/tech/techinvestor/techcorporatenews/2004-02-15-paycards_x.htm

FTC WARNING ABOUT PRIVATE NO-SPAM REGISTRY. The Federal Trade Commission has cautioned computer users not to fall victim a Web site claiming to offer an e-mail version of the federal do-not-call registry. Despite the official-looking appearance of the site's URL, the "Do Not Email Registry" has no affiliation with the U.S. government, and is apparently a scam for collecting e-mail addresses on behalf of spammers. However, the site's operators say their registry serves "legitimate direct marketers" who want to make sure their mailings don't go to spam opponents. The e-mail addresses collected by the registry are made available to bulk mailers in an encrypted form allowing them to check for any overlap with their own mailing lists without seeing the actual addresses. 321 STUDIOS COMES OUT WITH GAME BACKUP SOFTWARE. New software released by 321 Studios, already in hot water over its DVD-copying applications, gives PC gamers the ability to create a backup of any title and store it either on the PC's hard drive or on a recordable CD or DVD. Game X Copy was developed at the behest of parents wanting to
protect their investment in children's PC games by making a backup copy, says a 321 spokeswoman, echoing the company's explanations for its DVD X Copy and DVD Copy Plus software offerings. Movie studios and other software makers have argued that those products are illegal under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which prohibits the distribution of software designed to circumvent copyright protection technology. But the company's spokeswoman says 321 hasn't heard any objections from the game industry: "We're pretty confident in our position with Games X Copy. There's a legal precedent for backing up software." The Games X Copy software is available for $60 and works on PCs running any recent version of Windows. HOLLYWOOD'S 'HOLLOW VICTORY' 321 Studios has been ordered to modify its popular DVD Copy Plus and DVD X Copy software to remove a built-in tool for descrambling movies, but 321 founder and president Robert Moore says buyers can easily obtain a separate descrambler on the Internet. "It's a hollow victory" for movie studios, says Moore. Last Friday, a U.S. district judge ruled that 321's DVD-copying products violate the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which prohibits the circumvention of anti-copying technology such as the Content Scramble System used to protect DVDs. Moore said his company would comply while it appeals the ruling, and also plans to strip out anti-piracy features that the company had added "as a show of good faith," including an embedded disclaimer on all copied DVDs that they are not originals and technology that prevents further duplication. 321 has argued that its products are designed simply to give consumers fair use of the movies they've purchased, enabling them to protect those purchases by making a backup copy in case the original is damaged. Jack Valenti, head of the Motion Picture Association of America, told the Associated Press in November that, "If you buy a DVD you have a copy. If you want a backup copy you buy another one." RIAA FILES 531 MORE LAWSUITS AGAINST FILE-SHARERS.The Recording Industry Association of America has filed five separate lawsuits against 531 Internet users that it accuses of illegal file-sharing. The action comes on the heels of four similar suits filed by the RIAA against 532 users last month. All the suits are using the "John Doe" method, which identifies the alleged song-swappers through their numerical Internet addresses. The RIAA is seeking to discover the swappers' names and addresses through court-issued subpoenas. An appeals court in December ruled in favor of Verizon that the RIAA could not force ISPs to divulge the identities of subpoena targets before the lawsuits were filed. Sarah Deutsch, VP and associate general counsel for Verizon, says it has not yet received any subpoenas during this go-round, but is interested to see whether briefs filed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation and American Civil Liberties Union protesting RIAA's tactics will affect the case. "We're waiting for the resolution of the due process issues that have been raised by the public interest groups," says Deutsch. Meanwhile, Nielsen SoundScan, which tracks U.S. music sales, says U.S. album sales are up 10.4% this year compared to the same period in 2003. (Reuters/New York Times 17 Feb 2004) http://partners.nytimes.com/reuters/technology/tech-media-lawsuits.html

TABLES TURNED ON RIAA -- ACCUSED FILE-SWAPPER FIGHTS BACK.A New Jersey woman has countersued the Recording Industry Association of America, accusing it of extortion and racketeering tactics in its strategy to sue individual file-sharers. Michele Scimeca's lawsuit is one of "a handful" of countersuits, according to the RIAA. "If someone prefers not to settle, they of course have the opportunity to raise their objections in court," says an RIAA spokesperson. "We stand by our claims." Scimeca contends that by suing file-swappers and then settling the cases before they're brought to trial while threatening potential liabilities that could reach into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, the RIAA is engaging in activities more often associated with gangsters and organized crime. "This scare tactic has caused a vast amount of settlements from individuals who feared fighting such a large institution and feel victim to these actions and felt forced to provide funds to settle these actions instead of fighting," says Scimeca's attorney. "These types of scare tactics are not permissible and amount to extortion." The RIAA has sued a total of about 1,500 people and has settled with 381 of those. (CNet News.com 18 Feb 2004) http://news.com.com/2100-1027-5161209.html

FREE THE MUSIC. The Electronic Frontier Foundation is proposing legalization of online
file-sharing through a voluntary music license that would compensate artists. EFF lawyer Fred von Lohmann says: "Everyone agrees that file-sharing does a better job distributing music than anything else out there. It gives people a much broader selection of software to choose from. And, of course, it's better-priced. The problem is that artists and copyright holders aren't being compensated." But music industry people say the EFF plan has little chance of success without the support of the major music labels, and Mitch Glazier of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) says: "We've got a new, dynamic marketplace with Napster announcing its 5 millionth download. ITunes is just starting to get corporate partners. That's not failure at all. That's experimentation. Why the government should come in and take over a marketplace that's starting to develop is conceptually flawed in my mind." Wayne Rosso of the company that created Blubster and Piolet file-swapping services says: "I think it's one of several solutions that all reasonable men could probably understand and accept. The only problem is we're not dealing with reasonable men." (San Jose Mercury News 26 Feb 2004)

BLOGGING IN IRAN.Iranians have developed a passion for anonymous blogging because (in the words of one blogger) it gives them "a voice in a country where it's very hard to be heard" -- but now they're worried that the forthcoming parliamentary elections will result in the election of reactionary leadership that will expand Internet censorship. Columbia University media professor Sree Sreenivasan notes that, with the Internet, "You're basically avoiding the filter whether it's a nefarious government or an ignorant editor," and Iranian journalist Issa Sahakhiz expresses fear of increasing political censorship: "We have suffered under unjust press laws. We are afraid of more to come with this new parliament. The ultimate fear is that the regime will decide to place all servers under government control. If that happens, Iranians will no longer have an opportunity to see the Internet used to make sarcasms such as the following blogger's comment on the leadership of the religious mullahs: "It's very pleasant to have to talk with 18th century people in 2004." FLAT PANELS SLATED TO OUTPACE CRT SALES THIS YEAR.For the first time, global shipments of liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors will surpass those of cathode ray tube (CRT) units in 2004, according to IDC. Lower prices of LCD screens are fueling the shift, with costs for a 17-inch display now dropping below $400. By 2007, computer users in developed countries will have switched over almost completely to the slimmer displays, and IDC predicts shipments of CRTs to decline to about 30 million units, compared with an estimated 119 million LCD displays in 2007. According to an earlier study by iSuppli, worldwide revenue for LCD screens is projected to be $47 billion in 2004, up 32% from last year. "There's a universal attraction to these thinner, lighter, less cumbersome displays," says an IDC analyst. "Throw out an appealing price point to the masses, and you've got a formula for shaking up the marketplace." (CNet News.com 19 Feb 2004) http://news.com.com/2100-1041-5161666.html

VIRTUALLY FEARLESS.Virtual reality has become a new tool for helping patients overcome their fears and anxieties. Psychologist Albert Rizzo says: "It's a therapist's dream. To help people deal with their problems, you must get them exposed to what they fear most." The fear factor can be revved up, as for example by increasing the size or decreasing the attentiveness of a virtual audience a patient is asked to give a speech to -- or by adjusting the turbulence of a virtual airplane flight. A Georgia company called Virtually Better has created scenes of a glass elevator and a bridge to address fear of height, and developed a way to simulate a traveler's experience of flying through a thunderstorm to diminish the subject's fear of bad weather. U.S. MILITARY CREATES VIRTUAL EARTH The U.S. Army is creating a simulated, virtual Earth with the help of gaming company There, which is currently working on a virtual world for gamers. The Army's virtual planet will be drawn to scale from a real-world terrain database. There senior VP Robert Gehorsam says the military model will offer a "massively multi-user persistent environment" that will mimic real world physics as closely as possible. The emphasis will be on human interaction rather than testing out lots of advanced weaponry. Gehorsam says military conflicts will be simulated, but the Army will also be looking at ways to improved intelligence work as well as organizing and managing patrols, and working with indigenous populations. The software includes feedback tools that will enable trainers and students to assess and review progress during and after a simulation. Future plans call for mapping out the entire planet in realistic detail, but currently the only area modeled in any detail is part of Kuwait City. (BBC News 23 Feb 2004)

VIRTUAL WAR GAMES. Three aircraft carriers at Navy bases on both U.S. coasts are engaged this week in a virtual war game that uses computers to simulate battle conditions at sea. Vice Adm. Albert H. Konetzni Jr. says: "This will bring war-gaming to a new level. It will put the operators, the players, under great stress. They will be making decisions that are truly, truly critical to the carrying out of the operations, and it allows the operators, even down to the unit level, to really understand how they play in these scenarios." One of the participants in the exercise says: "We're trying to simulate all conditions of warfare that we could encounter: mine, surface, air, asymmetric threats like a small boat attack. VIRTUAL MUSEUMS OFFER JOURNEY THROUGH THE PAST.Researchers at the University of Geneva are using sophisticated 3D modeling to reconstruct virtual models of two Turkish mosques -- Aya Sofya and Hagia Sophia -- dating back to the 16th century, which users can explore, giving them a sense of "being there." Avatars -- virtual humans -- including an imam, have been added to simulate what it would have been like to attend Friday prayers back in the Ottoman era. Close attention was paid to recreating authentic furniture, textures and colors of the time. "The technology allows you to restore endangered sites, with the atmosphere and ambience of those buildings at that era," says University of Geneva Miralab team member Nedjma Cadi-Yazli. "We are trying to give the impression of going back in time. This kind of technology could be used for a virtual museum." (BBC News 12 Feb 2004) http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/3472589.stm
