"Whoever controls the media--the images--controls the culture." Allen Ginsberg

April 6 , 2003 - Vol 2. No.13

The new Proscenia Interactive web site is on line. Thanks to the efforts of LCC Intern Tami Schamp we have been able build upon our original site designed by Cory Davidson. There is a Student Lounge in the Resource section that will provide access to an archive of Newsletter discussion topics, Web links of value for designers, Job Search Engines, and other information we hope will be of value. We have had many Interns since our original web site was designed and now we've been able to recognize those individuals with an expanded staff page with links to their personal web sites. So, please visit and let us know what you think. We hope you will fine it a simple, easy to use, and attractive resource.

Be sure to check out the "One Person Can Make A Difference" video production competition in the opportunities section below. The first prize is $3,000 for a five minute production. I've also posted another video competition titled, "Create a Music Video for Tori Amos". Both should appeal to those of you interested in film and video media.

Todd Kesterson wrote recommending two other links of value related to last week's discussion about storyboard artist. Cathedral is a site devoted to the making of a film by the same title and provides some excellent examples of 3D animation and conceptual art storyboarding. A second site, Sotryboards.com provides links to a variety of work by many different designers. Both are great resources for ideas and understanding this unique art form.

What is "The Animatrix?" According to an Apple Newsletter, "It's a series of nine new animated stories by seven visionary directors inspired by the popular sci-fi thriller, "The Matrix." And while the entire "Animatrix" series will be offered on DVD and video soon, you can watch four complete episodes free on the web between now and May. See the trailer, and tune into the first episode, "The Second Renaissance Part 1," (These films contain scenes of a graphic nature and may not be suitable for all audiences)."

Please pass this newsletter on to others who may be interested in multimedia and communication. And, as always, if you would like to be removed from this list please let me know.

Cheers, Gary

DID YOU KNOW?

Before breaking into the mainstream directing Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting (1997), Portlander Gus Van Sant staked out a reputation as an independent filmmaker specializing in depiction's of people surviving on the edge. Both Drugstore Cowboy (1989) and My Own Private Idaho (1991) used Hollywood actors but had the look and feel of small, independent features. In 1998 Van Sant made waves with a quirky shot-by-shot remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 hit Psycho. Good Will Hunting was nominated for Best Director and Best Picture Oscars in 1998, but lost to James Cameron and his film Titanic. Source who2

DISCUSSION: Sound Designers

It's no surprise that as producers who live in an image based culture we often think first about the visual elements in our media design and only later in the production cycle give attention to audio.

Sound should not be thought of as a second cousin to the visual in the design process. It is equally important to consider both from the start. There is much we can learn from the sound designer who has become an increasingly important member of the film, game, and multimedia design team.

Sound design is the process of creating the swish of a light saber, altering the rich voice of James Earl Jone's voice into that of Darth Vader's menacing sound,, and all those other wonderful sounds we have come to expect from films like Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and every other sonic experience we have in the theater today that comes from the imagination of the sound designer.

The art of sound design is the right choice for those interested in audio for media. It¹s a booming profession that requires a combination of skill, patience, and hard work; professional sound designers are highly sought after and can command good fees.

Here is online material to help you learn more about the role of the sound designer and what it takes to find a position in this professional field.

Nick Peck's Sound By Design Make Pictures Come To Life With Sound is an incredible introduction to sound design. He notes that "We¹ve probably seen the name of a sound designer in the movie credits along with the names of the composer and cinematographer, or as part of the production team for computer and video games, theatrical productions, Web sites, and even radio dramas. But exactly what is a sound designer, and when did that position reach its current status?"

Interviews with Sound Designers:

Darryl Duncan - sound designer for games - an exciting and growing field
Jeff Largent a sound designer for Braveheart discusses how to be a sound designer.
Ben Burtt - sound designer for Star Wars
Steve Munro - sound designer for The Sweet Hereafter and Last Night

TECHNOLOGY NEWS FROM ONLINE SERVICES:

E-MAIL TRAFFIC PATTERNS SIGNAL WHO'S IN CHARGE. A new technique developed at Hewlett-Packard's research labs in Palo Alto can quickly identify online communities and the key people in them. "If the CIA or another intelligence agency has a lot of intercepted e-mail from people suspected of being part of a criminal network, they could use the technique to figure out who the leaders of the network might be," says researcher Joshua Tyler. Tyler and his colleagues analyzed communications patterns using the lab's log of nearly 200,000 internal e-mails sent by 485 employees over a couple of months. They plotted lines between people who had exchanged at least 30 e-mails with each other, and found the grid included 1,110 links between 367 people. The researchers then used a computer algorithm that looks for critical links that form bridges between separate groups, which revealed 66 communities within the lab. To identify the leader in each community, they plotted the same network of e-mails using a standard algorithm that tries to arrange the connections in the least tangled way. This step identified the managers, who tended to cluster in the middle. "This approach puts in the middle the people who have the most diverse range of contacts in the organization -- and these tend to be the leaders," says Tyler, who adds that the technique could be used to identify the ringleaders in criminal or terrorist gangs. INTERNET VS. RECORDING INDUSTRY. Media analyst Eric Garland of Big Champagne has told California lawmakers that the growth of music file-sharing on the Internet is "fundamentally unstoppable," because 61 million Americans and millions more worldwide are already downloading music and only 9% of them think they're doing something wrong. "We see only one trend. More people are downloading more copyrighted material." Garland's advice for the recording industry is to embrace digital distribution rather than institute lawsuits or education campaigns, but such advice is not well-received by industry executives, who are routinely urged by Internet enthusiasts to accommodate to technological realities. Phil Corwin, a lobbyist for Internet music service Kazaa, told the same group of state legislators: "The record business, in the digital revolution, has been a day late and a dollar short." [A dollar may not be the final figure.] The fight goes on. (AP/San Jose Mercury News 28 Mar 2003) http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/5502291.htm Source:NewsScanDaily

ADOBE TACKLES DVD-AUTHORING SOFTWARE MARKET Publishing software giant Adobe Systems is touting the upcoming release of its Encore DVD software, a collection of tools for organizing video and other content on a DVD, creating interactive menus and burning the final product to a disc. The company previously has offered basic DVD authoring tools in some of its video-editing products, but Encore is a full-featured product that enables users to easily move content back and forth between it and Adobe's popular Photoshop software. "We've basically taken the guts of Photoshop and put it in Encore," says Giles Baker, an Adobe product manager. Encore is slated to go on sale this summer at a price of $549, and will be targeted at professionals, such as wedding videographers and promotional DVD producers. HDTV WIDENS ITS HORIZONS Of the nation's 106 million television households, there are only 4.9 million HDTV-capable sets and of these only 640,000 have been purchased with a built-in tuner or add-on-decoder required to receive a high-definition broadcast. Still, there are signs that the technology is now accepted far beyond the "early adopter" groups and is moving into mainstream use. Many industry analysts think that sports broadcasting will be the "killer application" that wins new customers, and that hypothesis will be tested fairly soon, because ESPN, the sports network, plans to carry a hundred professional baseball, basketball, hockey and football games live in HDTV format in the year ahead. Industry analyst Gerry Kaufhold of the market research firm In-Stat/MDR says: "To show off HDTV to its best advantage, sports must be part of the mix. High definition, with its wide screen and sharp image, puts you on the field. For ESPN to make a commitment to HDTV programming is a real breakthrough."
