Those interested in film and video production should check out the Events and Opportunities section below. There are two short film production contests outlined both resulting in national broadcast of your award winning work.

A few weeks ago I wrote about the copyright issues with which multimedia developers must be concerned. The Legal Roadmap for Multimedia Producers, by Mark Litwakis, is a site worth exploring related to the legal ramifications of producing multimedia. Litwakis writes, "While state-of-the-art technology permits the development of diverse and innovative programs, there are many legal hurdles to overcome in making even a simple multimedia product. Since interactive programming requires more content than linear programs, hundreds of releases and, or permissions may be required to produce a single program. Determining and securing all the necessary releases and rights for a multimedia project can be a tiresome and complicated endeavor."

A fascinating look at the illustrative art of Al Parker (1906-1985) is available online. Parker played a significant role in the history of American illustration. "From the late 1930's through the 1960's, Parker - tirelessly inventive - produced strikingly graphic images for mid-20th century periodicals, especially illustrated fiction in women's magazines. His most famous assignment was a 17-year series of Mother Daughter covers for the Ladies Home Journal; among his most intriguing was a pictorial essay for Sports Illustrated on the 1963 Monaco Grand Prix. Parker was a stylistic innovator and a celebrity. Parker's work can be a point of entry into important issues in American culture studies, specifically gender roles, the postwar move to the suburbs, and the history of advertising." The site makes use of illustrations, video, interviews and other material of to explore the professional career of this leader in illustration art.

Is the multimedia industry slump coming to an end?

The multimedia job market has been a rough place to find work since the start of the economic recession. Layoffs in the media field have filled the market with skilled professionals. Larger cities attract the cream of the crop from the unemployed and competition for positions is a bit cut throat at times.

So what about the future for the majority of this newsletter's readership? Will there be employment opportunities? To help answer that question I suggest that you read Rumblings of Recovery an editorial by Phil LoPiccolo, Editor-in-Chief of Computer Graphics World. LoPiccolo looks at the changing market place and what the immediate future holds for the interactive media industry. The future is looking brighter and that is good news for all.

Please pass this newsletter on to others who may be interested in multimedia and communication. And, as always, if you would like to be removed from this list please let me know.

Cheers, Gary

DISCUSSION: Infographics Specialist

I'm always looking for different career options in multimedia. The task of infographics specialist recently caught my attention. It is a specialized area that may appeal to those who are interested in taking complex ideas and making them easily understood through illustration and graphic design.

We've all been fascinated with publications that are well illustrated with charts, diagrams, and cut away drawings. Such illustrations show graphic details of how things work, the interrelationship of parts, or make complex ideas easy to understand as visual information. And now animated graphics for film, television, multimedia, and the web are a growing sub-specialization that combines information and graphic design. A specialist in Infographics helps communicate knowledge and understanding through the use of textbook illustrations, media diagrams, medical illustrations, animation, and other presentation visuals. The goal of infographics is to educate and inform audiences.

Here are some links to Infographic sites that provide insight into this unique specialization.

Air Force Link. A site devoted to things air force in nature including some excellent examples of military infographics.

Birkey.com examples of charts, graphs, diagrams, and informational graphics for publishing, textbooks, articles, books, magazines, presentations and many other applications.

Understanding USA A promotional site for Richard Saul Wurman's work devoted to informational graphics about the USA. Wurman wrote Information Anxiety 2, an excellent reference on information overload.

Bonzai Graphics. Provides three archive volumes of infographics which give you a good overview of the medium.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS FROM ONLINE SERVICES:

LOW-BUDGET MAC CLONE Businessman John Fraser has developed a low-budget entry-level Macintosh clone (currently called iBox); it will sell for about $650 without a display and can be paired with almost any kind of display: large or small, flat panel or picture-tube, new or old. Fraser, who is about as polite businessman as you could ever find, says: "Before I'm a businessman, I'm a Mac lover. I don't want to hurt Apple. If it says I would do that, I will back away." He's already volunteering to rename his product, to avoid confusion with Apple's iMac or iPod. What a guy. APPLE -- THE COMPUTER AND RECORD COMPANY Apple has been holding secret talks with Vivendi Universal exploring the possibility of Apple's acquisition, for about $6 billion, of Vivendi's Universal Music Group, which is the largest record company in the world. Although no Apple or Vivendi managers have commented on the talks, it is known that the investment bank Morgan Stanley is now conducting due diligence to set the stage for the purchase. Apple has been working to develop a new service that would make downloading and purchasing music from the Internet as easy as buying a book from Amazon.com. RECORDING INDUSTRY, WEBCASTERS REACH ROYALTY PACT In a move to head off a potentially difficult arbitration process, the recording industry and Internet radio operators have agreed on terms for paying royalties to labels and artists for songs played on the Web. The rate set for 2003-2004 is nearly identical to that set by the Librarian of Congress for 2002 -- webcasters can either pay a rate of 0.0762 cents per song per listener, or 0.0117 cents per listener hour. Webcasters that sell subscriptions to listeners can also choose to pay 10.9% of their subscription revenue. Both groups appeared to be satisfied with the agreement, which will save them millions of dollars in legal fees by avoiding arbitration. GAMING THE WAR The latest war simulation video game from Electronic Arts ("Command & Conquer Generals") has quickly been updated to include simulations based on the topography of Iraq and Baghdad. Players have created and uploaded about a thousand additional maps and battle mission modifications for the game to share with other players, and the new version of the game features a showdown in Baghdad between American troops and Iraqi terrorists. Electronics Arts says that it took six months before the previous version of the game developed nearly as much interest. SOFTWARE PIRACY RATES FALLING WORLDWIDE A report by the Software Business Alliance and market research firm IDC says that software piracy rates (measured by the amount of business installed without a license) have declined in many countries since 1996: down by 30% in Egypt; 28% in Ireland; 14% in Colombia; 20% in South Korea. Pointing out that reductions in piracy rates lead to increased sales and improved government economies, the authors of the report say that the countries with most to gain from curbing software piracy are ones where the rates are highest: China (92%) and Russia (87%). The U.S. has the lowest piracy rate (25%). (San Jose Mercury News 2 Apr 2003) http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/5540543.htm Source:NewsScanDaily

MUSIC PIRACY VIOLATIONS: $150K A SONG The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has filed lawsuits against four students it says it misappropriated academic computing resources to "illegally distribute millions of copyrighted works over the Internet." Two of the accused students are enrolled at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, one student is enrolled at Princeton, and the fourth is at Michigan Technological University. If they are convicted, they could be fined as much as $150,000 for each song they illegally traded. Digital media analyst Phil Leigh says of the RIAA's action: "This is just another step in the direction of demonstrating to the public that there will be penalties for what they consider to be copyright violations. I think they're attempting to take a carrot-and-stick approach here. They're whacking a few people with a stick now. And the carrot is the more liberal rules relating to label-backed subscription online services." MSN SEARCHES FOR PLACE IN SEARCH-SERVICE MARKET Getting ready to battle Google in the business of offering Web searching services, Microsoft's MSN Internet services division says: "We believe we can provide consumers with a better product and a better user experience." MSN acknowledges that "more and more" it regards Google as a competitor. But MSN is not alone in its challenge to Google's supremacy in the market: last month Yahoo finalized its purchase of the search company Inktomi. 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CELL PHONE The cellular telephone was invented 30 years ago today by Martin Cooper, an employee of Motorola as "just part of the job." Here's his recollection of how it happened: "Bell Labs had invented this thing called cellular technology and told the government they would like to take over the entire personal communications business. They were telling the world they were the only one technically capable of executing it and the only ones with the money to do it. Their objective was to build car phones. But we thought the world was ready for portable phones. We had been working on portable communications for years -- antennas and things of that nature -- and had this dream of building a personal, portable cell phone. But when this situation came up with the Bell system, we felt we had to demonstrate this. So in November 1972, I conceived of this portable phone, and my team and I built it over several months." Since his days at Motorola, the 74-year-old Cooper has started "four or five" companies and says the only thing that would slow him down "is physical or mental impairment, and that hasn't happened." SARS VIRUS RAISES FEARS IN TECH INDUSTRY Intel has backed out of two major road shows in Beijing and Taipei this month, citing concerns over SARS, the severe acute respiratory syndrome that's sweeping rapidly through Asia. The cancellations lend credence to warnings by analysts that the mysterious illness could cripple the high-tech industry if it's not brought under control soon. In addition to Intel's change of plans, Motorola temporarily closed a Singapore factory last week after one of its workers was diagnosed with the disease and Acer has advised its employees against nonessential visits to plants in China. Aberdeen Group analyst Russ Craig says that the industry has become too reliant on China for semiconductors and basic components for laptops, DVD players and televisions, and warns that SARS could cause serious manufacturing disruptions, schedule slippages and transportation delays that could derail the global tech industry. FCC SUPPORT FOR POWER-GRID FOR 'LAST MILE' COMMUNICATIONS The Federal Communications Commission and its chairman, Michael K. Powell, have licensed seven companies to conduct field tests of technology that would allow Internet data to be sent over ordinary power lines, providing the "last mile" of communications between fiber optic trunk lines and individual homes. The technology requires installation of equipment to act as a switch for transferring data between those two transmission modes. One company using the technology in Hawaii says it can offer data rates at twice the speed of DSL phone lines. AT&T NOW OFFERING PREPAID WEB CARDS AT&T will soon be selling pre-paid Web cards in convenience stores and other retail locations, allowing purchasers (or their children) to spend surfing time on specific Web sites, such as Disney or Shockwave. Will cards for pornography be far behind? Jupiter Research analyst Robert A. Leathern says, "Clearly, it has enormous appeal in anything where people wish to remain anonymous. You're going to see this innovation in the payment area happening soon in the adult Web sites and content providers." AT&T is saying no (or at least not just yet) to the idea of selling cards for adult sites. An AT&T vice president explains: "Of course it's something that you discuss. But we really don't see anything in that direction. The AT&T brand is a huge asset that the company has, and it stands for quality, integrity and family values."
