DID
YOU KNOW?
Portlander
filmmaker Jim Blashfield has alternated between visual arts
and filmmaking over the past 30 years. In both mediums, he looks
for a way to explore interior meaning in the commonplace.
Having begun his career as a graphic
artist and poster designer, he began making short films in the '70s.
In
1980 his work "The Mid-Torso of Inez" was shown at the Northwest
Film Festival, the Bellevue Film Festival, the Baltimore Film Festival,
ArtQuake and in a regional touring package.
In
his 1985 work, "Suspicious Circumstances," he experimented
with series photography of models and objects and panoramic backgrounds.
After viewing "Suspicious Circumstances," David Byrne commissioned
Blashfield to direct the Talking Heads music video, "And She Was."
The video was nominated for Best Video and Best Art Direction at
the MTV Awards, and was listed by Rolling Stone Magazine as one
of the top 100 videos of all time in 1995.
Blashfield
worked with many artists on music videos, including Joni Mitchell,
Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, Tears for Fears and Michael Jackson.
The most elaborate music video was Michael Jackson's "Leave Me
Alone," a technically complex work with as many as 35 layers
of images animated frame-by-frame making up a scene. More than 40
artists worked with Blashfield on the video. It received many awards,
including a Grammy Award and a Cannes Gold Lion.
After
a period of intense commercial work, Blashfield took a sabbatical
and spent a year painting. In 1994 he was one of 12 artists chosen
to paint a mural for the Portland Light Rail Station. In 1996 he
presented a video installation involving over 700 historical photographs
of Portland. He is currently at work on a new personal film, "Bunnyheads."
The
NW Film Center in Portland will feature visiting artist Jim Blashfield's
films in the month of May. On May 16, The Short Films of Jim Blashfield
will be featured at the Guild Theater at 7:30 PM. On May 30 at 7:30
The Music Videos of Jim Blasfield will be screened at the Guild
Theater.
This
summer Jim Blashfield will teach a workshop at the Film Center for
advanced students. Check NW Film Center School of Film
summer classes for more information

DISCUSSION:
Writing
For Media
The
first challenge of writing for multimedia is to break away from
one's traditional orientation in the use of text. Schooling has
taught us that a piece 8.5 x 11-inch of paper is to be filled with
the printed word. Yet, the computer screen is not another piece
of blank paper.
True
there are those instances such as this newsletter, which are text
oriented. But even here the use of brief sentences and short paragraphs
as well as navigation tools facilitate a reader's choice as to what
to read and in what order.
Text
as used in multimedia needs to be designed as one element in an
array of images, sounds, animation, and infographics. How one organizes
information and facilitates the user's navigation through it, becomes
the second challenge in writing for multimedia.
This
week I am recommending a number of online references that should
be of value in the design of web based and interactive multimedia
products. I hope you find these of value.
The
first reference is Writing
For Media by Michael Butgzy. This guide will not show you how
to write your next feature film. But, it is an excellent resource
for those who need to know how to effectively present information
on the web or a disc. The emphasis is getting the user involved
and letting the interactive nature of computer base media be fully
utilized.
The
Web
Style Guide focuses on the functionality of good design. There
are eight chapters including 1: Process, 2: Interface Design, 3:
Site Design, 4: Page Design, 5: Typography, 6: Editorial Style,
7: Graphics, and 8: Multimedia.
Sun
Microsystems has on line Writing
to Be Read an effective guide written by Jacob Nielsen. It contains
practical advice based page design and the consistent use of textual
elements.
The
Editing
for Hypertext publication by Rick Ellis at the University of
Washington provides excellent examples of how to edit and present
text for the web. As noted above, the writing and editing of text
for interactive media is much different that what most of us are
used to from other processes.
Finally,
Writing
for Effective Web Pages provides insight into how one can keep
the delivery of text simple, direct, and effective.

NEWS:
BioChipNet:
The Informational Web site on BioChip Technologies [.pdf] http://www.biochipnet.de/
The BioChipNet database, maintained by researchers at the University
of Tübingen in Germany, offers a "comprehensive information platform
on microarrays and related fields." The BioChipNet Web pages offer
a mountain of microarray-related resources, including profiles of
companies and institutions engaged in biochip technology, links
to PubMed articles, announcements of upcoming meetings and conferences,
a detailed glossary, and more. Researchers and commercial interests
alike should find BioChipNet and its conveniently centralized catalog
of microarray resources of use. Copyright The

Documentography
[Flash, Quick Time] Over the past one-hundred and fifty years, groups
of photographers have formed collectives to promote their work and,
at times, to advocate on behalf of certain social causes. The photographers
that comprise the Documentography group work to achieve both goals
and have developed this site to showcase some of their own work,
along with the works of other independent photo-journalists. From
the main page, visitors can look at intriguing work of some of these
up and coming international photographers, including Anna Kari,
Eduardo Martino, and Guilhem Alandry. Visitors can also browse the
entire contents of the group's Web-based photo magazine, Issue.
In the most recent edition, visitors can view photo essays dealing
with the relocation of indigenous people of Canada and the mission
of an evangelical church in the heart of Amsterdam's red-light district.Copyright

#E-MAIL
TENSION SYNDROME IDENTIFIED
People's anxieties and fears over e-mail etiquette have given rise
to a new term: pre- and post-mail tension (PPMT). A major problem
is that as many as half of all e-mail users fail to properly understand
all the nuances of personal messages, and blame the resulting confusion
for arguments and even relationship break-ups. "E-mail is a great
way to make contact with people and maybe develop a romance. The
problem of PPMT we have revealed by these statistics is caused not
by e-mail itself, but how people let their anticipation and expectation
get the better of them," says Helen Petrie, professor of human computer
interaction at London's City University. A survey by Yahoo! Mail
showed that people can become obsessed with "inbox expectations"
-- constantly checking their e-mail inbox to see if a message has
been answered. Sixty-four percent of respondents in that survey
reported problems concentrating at work if they were waiting for
a reply to a specific e-mail, reinforcing the impression that e-mail
is contributing to workplace "cyber-slacking." (Silicon.com 18 Apr

CYBER
ESTONIA
At the time Soviet control of Estonia ended in 1991, most Estonians
didn't even have a telephone, but now Estonia is a country with
an advanced information technology infrastructures. Half of the
country's 1.4 million population now do their banking online (and
scores of branch banks have closed). Of 82 countries survey in a
recent study by the World Economic Forum, Estonia came in #2 in
Internet banking, #3 in e-government, and #8 in overall practical
use of the Internet for day-to-day activities. About 70% of Estonians
own mobile phones, 40% have a home computer with online access,
and more than 80% of all Estonian businesses conduct some of their
business online. And for entertainment? Estonian communications
executive Toomas Somera has said, "If a Frenchman loves to sip wine
with his friends and a German enjoys his beer, then an Estonian
likes to sit behind his computer on a dark evening, surfing the
Net and at the same time talking on his mobile phone." (AP/San Jose

COMPUTER
MAKERS TARGET RECYCLING-FRIENDLY DESIGN Computer makers such
as Hewlett-Packard and Dell, which recently have started getting
involved in the recycling of their obsolete machines, are beginning
to change the way they build their products, making it easier to
dispose of them in an environmentally friendly way. "The more they
become familiar with these end-of-life concerns, the more likely
it is they close the loop," says Ted Smith, executive director of
Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition, which is part of a group that advocates
all electronics makers taking responsibility for their products'
disposal. The biggest challenge, says Smith, is redesigning the
products so they don't use so many toxic compounds to begin with.
Right now, Japanese companies are ahead of the game, with many manufacturers
already establishing goals and timetables for removing lead and
the bromine currently used in plastics as a fire-retardant. "They
are being driven, as everyone else is, by European regulations,"
says Smith. For instance, NEC introduced a PC last year that has
a completely recyclable case and whose circuit boards are entirely
lead-free. Meanwhile, HP has a working prototype of an inkjet printer
that features a biodegradable plastic shell made from corn rather
than petroleum. And Dell has revamped its assembly process to make
it easier to take the machines apart at the end. The average desktop
can now be disassembled in two minutes; more complicated workstations
take about twice that long. (CNet News.com 22 Apr 2003) hhttp://news.com.com/2100-1041-997755.html?tag=fd_lede2_hed

ASK
JEEVES GETS A MAKEOVER In a bid to stay in the game in the fiercely
competitive search engine market, Ask Jeeves has revamped its consumer
search engine tool, following the lead of Yahoo and Google. Ask
Jeeves Web properties president Steve Berkowitz calls the upgrade
"the beginning of a new direction for Ask Jeeves" and a significant
improvement on search in general. "Search is imperfect because we
are asking technology to respond to human input, which is based
on the way people think. We believe great search is a combination
of science and art." Although the new search engine relies heavily
on technology, query results will also include suggestions from
Ask Jeeves' editorial team, blending hand-selected content and answers
with automated responses. The company says its new service will
make it easier to find pictures and news headlines, and will include
its popular clarification tools (for refining a search) and automated
spell checker feature. "The battle right now is focused on the user
experience," says a Forrester Research analyst, who notes that while
the top five companies are sparring over the consumer market, the
enterprise market is still wide open and is slated to become an
important part of the overall search business. (E-Commerce Times

BIGGER
ONLINE ADS SQUEEZE WEB CONTENT Several top online publishers,
including New York Times Digital, Forbes.com and CBSMarketwatch.com,
have adopted new online ad formats that give marketers a full half-page
to tout their products and services. Others, such as USAToday.com,
are expected to follow suit. "The goal is to make it easier on the
traditional advertiser and to speak their language -- a half-page
ad is something they're used to in print," says Dan Silmore, director
of marketing for CBSMarketwatch.com. The new format is part of the
industry's shift away from banner ads and Web publishers hope the
new dimensions will be approved as a standard size by the Interactive
Advertising Bureau. Michael Zimbalist, executive director of the
Online Publishers Association, says that the industry hasn't "nailed
a final set of online ad units," but is still experimenting to see
which formats advertisers find most attractive. "The banner wasn't
a great medium for either creative or information-rich advertising.
This is part of an increasing trend to have fewer but bigger ad
units." But Web design expert Jakob Nielsen says the half-page units
are a move in the wrong direction. "Ironically, the one type of
ads that really work on the Web are the small, text-only ads on
search engines. I would advise other sites to take what works and
make it better rather than take what doesn't work and make it bigger."

THE
BEAUTY OF SPAM IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER Brightmail, which
makes spam-filtering software for corporations and Internet service
providers, says that 45% of the mail it now sees is spam (unsolicited
bulk-distributed messages), and AOL says 2 billion spam messages
are sent to its 35 million customers each day, accounting for more
than 70% of the total AOL incoming traffic. But the spam creators
are getting tired of having figures like these flouted as though
spam was a bad thing. Bob Dallas of an e-mail firm in Ohio says,
"We have allowed these spam cops to rise out of nowhere to be self-appointed
police and block whole swaths of the industry. This is against everything
that America stands for. The consumer should be the one in control
of this." E-mail marketer Alyx Sachs thinks the same way Bob Dallas
does: "These antispammers should get a life. Do their fingers hurt
too much from pressing the delete key? How much time does that really
take from their day?" (New York Times 22 Apr 2003)

PENN
STATE PULLS THE PLUG ON STUDENTS' ACCOUNTS Pennsylvania State
University has suspended the Internet accounts of about 220 students
after investigations showed they were using the school's broadband
network to trade in "publicly listed copyright infringing materials."
The school said connections will be restored once the copyrighted
files have been removed from the systems. The move came about a
month after the school had issued a warning to its 110,000 students,
alerting them that illegal trading of copyrighted materials was
against the law, and just weeks after the Recording Industry Association
of America slapped four students at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute,
Princeton University and Michigan Technological University with
lawsuits. (Internet News 22 Apr 2003) http://www.atnewyork.com/news/article.php/2194861

NAPSTER-BACKING
VENTURE FIRMS HIT WITH LAWSUIT Universal Music and EMI Group
have filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Hummer Winblad
Venture Partners and two partners -- John Hummer and Hank Barry
-- alleging that the venture capital group contributed to unauthorized
copying of music through its $13 million investment in Napster and
through Barry's role as Napster's CEO for more than a year. Both
men also served on Napster's board. The suit seeks $150,000 per
copyright violation plus punitive damages. "Businesses, as well
as those individuals or entities who control them, premised on massive
copyright infringement of works created by artists should face the
legal consequences for their actions," said the two record labels
in a joint statement. Hummer Winblad's investment was made in May
2000 -- after the recording industry sued Napster for enabling copyright
infringement, but the case never made it to trial. Napster filed
for bankruptcy protection in June 2003. The National Venture Capital
Association is watching the case closely and cautioned that the
outcome could have a chilling effect on investment in unproven technologies,
thus hampering economic growth. "The concern is that investors are
being sued for investing in high-risk companies," says NVCA VP Jeanne
Metzger. (Reuters 23 Apr 2003) Source:NewsScanDaily
PROTECTION
AGAINST CD 'RIPPING' Macrovision, a company known for helping
Hollywood moviemakers prevent their videocassettes and DVDs from
being copied, is joining with Microsoft in a project that will allow
music companies to make CDs that consumers can copy for themselves
but not "rip" them for sharing with others. Because standard CDs
are fairly easy to copy, the music industry has seen increasingly
declining sales (down 2.5% in 2001 and 8.7% in 2002), and industry
analyst Richard Doherty of the Envisioneering Group says fear that
such declines will continue has made some music labels "willing
to risk consumer playback problems and increased customer wrath."
In Europe copy-protected disks have met with strong consumer resistance
because some CDs don't play in all playback devices and some get
stuck in computers. (USA Today 23 Apr 2003) http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/techinnovations/2003-04-23-cds_x.htm
