Up Front Sunday Morning:

The Proscenia Newsletter has been on a three week hiatus while a dying computer was replaced and software upgraded. We are now back on-line and resuming a bi-monthly publication schedule.

This may be a good time to re-introduce the newsletter as we have added many new subscribers and others have discovered this publication on the web.

Our newsletter began as a weekly e-mail letter to Proscenia interns who were involved with project activities. That effort included items related to media design, pointers to current online articles, and a listing of local and regional jobs. We soon found that others were interested and the newsletter took the form of an html document posted to a growing subscriber list.

A decision was made last year to make the newsletter a web based publication. We maintained our mailing list as a way to alert readers to a new edition when published. Having a web-based newsletter facilitates access by anyone at any time.

We haven't changed our focus on local and regional activity in the Pacific Northwest. But we have expanded coverage of topics of interest to a broader readership. It is hoped that you enjoy this free publication. We welcome your feedback and contributions.

Features this week:

• Why put a lot of effort into the construction of a web site that no one visits? This week's Discussion Section features tips for effectively marketing your client's site.

Random Links provides a set of resources related to the effective naming, or branding, of a product before it goes to market.

• As always, there are plenty of tips, news and job announcements to keep one busy on this Sunday morning.

Local Oregon and NW News:

• Lights! Camera! Action! Hollywood has returned to Eugene! Filming is underway on the production of "Sisters" directed by Arthur Allan Seidelman and produced by Eugene business executive Carolyn Chambers. The film stars Maria Bello and Erika Christensen, Mary Stuart Masterson, Rip Torn, Chris O'Donnell and Eric McCormack.

The film's story is inspired by Anton Chekov's stage play The Three Sisters.

Although the film adaptation is set at a small private college on Manhattan's Upper East Side,it will be shot in its entirety on sets in and around Eugene including the University of Oregon, the old Cottage Grove Hospital and the Chambers Media Center soundstages. Production will last about a month.

The Eugene area has been the site for several feature films over the years. Of the more recent productions, Animal House (1977) is perhaps the best known. Others include,The Way West (1967), Getting Straight (1970), Drive, He Said (1970), Five Easy Pieces (1970), Sacred Ground (1975), The Swarm (1978), How to Beat the High Cost of Living (1978), Personal Best (1981), Stand By Me (1985), Finish Line (1988), The Four Diamonds (1994), PRE (1996), Ricochet River (1997), and Inconceivable (1997).

One of the classic Jack Nickelson film scenes was shot in Eugene. In Five Easy Pieces Nickelson's character, Dupea, stops at a diner on his way home (Denny's off I-5). He becomes aggravated and exasperated by meaningless rules that a live-by-the-rules waitress (Lorna Thayer) stubbornly follows in refusing to accommodate his desire for a simple menu substitution.

Dupea: I'd like a plain omelet, no potatoes, tomatoes instead, a cup of coffee, and wheat toast.
Waitress: (She points to the menu) No substitutions.
Dupea: What do you mean? You don't have any tomatoes?
Waitress: Only what's on the menu. You can have a number two - a plain omelet It comes with cottage fries and rolls.
Dupea: Yeah, I know what it comes with. But it's not what I want.
Waitress: Well, I'll come back when you make up your mind.
Dupea: Wait a minute. I have made up my mind. I'd like a plain omelet, no potatoes on the plate, a cup of coffee, and a side order of wheat toast.
Waitress: I'm sorry, we don't have any side orders of toast...an English muffin or a coffee roll.
Dupea: What do you mean you don't make side orders of toast? You make sandwiches, don't you?
Waitress: Would you like to talk to the manager?
Dupea: ...You've got bread and a toaster of some kind?
Waitress: I don't make the rules.
Dupea: OK, I'll make it as easy for you as I can. I'd like an omelet, plain, and a chicken salad sandwich on wheat toast, no mayonnaise, no butter, no lettuce. And a cup of coffee.
Waitress: A number two, chicken sal san, hold the butter, the lettuce and the mayonnaise. And a cup of coffee. Anything else?
Dupea: Yeah. Now all you have to do is hold the chicken, bring me the toast, give me a check for the chicken salad sandwich, and you haven't broken any rules.
Waitress (spitefully): You want me to hold the chicken, huh?
Dupea: I want you to hold it between your knees.
Waitress (turning and telling him to look at the sign that says, "No Substitutions") Do you see that sign, sir? Yes, you'll all have to leave. I'm not taking any more of your smartness and sarcasm.
Dupea: You see this sign? (He sweeps all the water glasses and menus off the table.)

Nine Things To Know Before Selecting The Web Host For Your Business is an article that relates to this week's theme of web site marketing and promotion. It may seem simple yet it is oftentimes overlooked. When it comes to choosing the right Internet hosting provider for their Web sites, the majority of business owners or companies know very little about making the best Internet/Web hosting decisions.

• An ethnographic study by the Online Publishers Association describes the media habits of the 18-34 year old audience. The study, conducted by John Carey, research professor and managing director of Greystone Communications, revealed that media use by this age group is related to lifestyle.

This particular audience has only small amounts of time available in which to use media. Chaotic time schedules result in the use of media on the run.The study notes that various media provide different functions for consumers. Television is equated with "escapist entertainment" and radio provides connected companionship. The pervasive Internet at home and work is experienced as a source of accessible and convenient information and entertainment. The Internet has become the dominant medium in the lives of these particular consumers. You can find a full report on this study at the TMC net.com web site.

• The Portland based NW Film Center has posted its summer classes available for kids, teens, and teachers. Continuing education and College credit is available. The Center is also offering a Handmade Filmmaking workshop on Saturday, May 15 from 12-5PM. The instructor is Reed Harkness the founder of Tiny Picture Club, a local Super 8 film collective that coordinates screenings up and down the coast. A former animation director at Flying Rhinoceros, he has taught workshops in San Francisco and Vancouver, B.C. The tuition fee is $45.00. Check out the NW Film Center web site for more information.

• Apple Computer is making available a free 55 page User Guide for Quick Time. It is available as a printable PDF file.

• The Pew Internet & American Life Project, examines the use of the internet by rural residents across the United States in a free 38-page publication. The online PDF document, Rural Areas and the Internet, provides a comprehensive look at the use of the Internet outside urban and suburban areas.

• The Eugene based International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) has received a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for the creation of the Center for Applied Research in Educational Technology (CARET). The primary function of this new center is to bridge "educational technology research to practice by offering research-based answers to critical questions." The center's web site offers critical reviews of articles and studies related to the use of technology in education.

• Broadcasters and broadcasting regulators around the world face a new challenge as the children's & youth Radio Manifesto was made public at the Rio Summit, the 4th World Summit on Media for Children April 19-23 in Rio de Janeiro.

The recent conference brought together two thousand delegates representing film & television companies, all major broadcasters, radio producers, manufacturers of video games and computer software, as well as 150 youth participants. The conference placed children's rights to quality media high on the agenda.

The Radio Manifesto sets out what young people want and what they really need from radio.  Why Radio? In many parts of the world, radio is the mass medium with the furthest outreach. When compared to television, it is low cost. It can provide information in local languages. It can link with the Internet to create powerful new opportunities. And radio can bridge the divide between rich and poor providing information, education, and entertainment to all, including people with no access to other mass media.

Copies of the Radio Manifesto are being distributed in Portuguese, Spanish, and English to participants at the Rio Summit. The text is also available in English as a free download on the World Radio Forum web site.

Fun Stuff:

• Lets begin with a bit of trivia this Sunday morning. The popular TV program "Friends" ends on May 6. Nearly 85 million people are expected to tune in for this finale. How much would it cost for you to buy 30 seconds of air time to broadcast your commercial on hair spray?

Advertisers currently buy 30 seconds of air time on the program for $500,000. However, 30 seconds of airtime on the May 6 show will cost $2 million. This figure does not include the cost of producing the commercial.

According to an article in the Baltimore sun, "The price for a spot on the Friends finale eclipses the $1.6 million gained by "Seinfeld" for its finale in 1998. That was a marked increase from just five years earlier when the last episode of "Cheers" drew $500,000 per 30 seconds in 1993."

"MASH, based on a popular book and movie about a mobile army surgical hospital in the Korean War, attracted 100 million viewers to its last episode on CBS in 1983--still a record." (Source: Tribune Newspapers: The Baltimore Sun, April 25, 2004)

• If you've become angered by a forwarded e-mail giving notice that Congress is considering Bill 602P applying a 5 cent tax on each e-mail message you send to help fund the US Postal Service, relax, it is a hoax according to the Urban Legends web site. The hoax apparently began in Canada and was adapted for distribution in the US.

• Virtual experiences on the web continue to be developed. The "Visite Virtuelle" at the Louvre in Paris provides more than 60 panoramic QuickTime VR of the museum's interior and magnificent exterior. Also explore galleries filled with paintings such as Leonardo Da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" and "The Virgin on the Rocks." (source: Scout Report)

MAIL BAG: It is always good to hear from readers.

Proscenia Newsletter's Maya tutorial contributor, Keith Legg, recently wrote that every now and then he comes across some remarkable resource material on the web related to 3D graphics. He recommends the web site of visual artist Yanick Dusseault as an example of high quality matt paintings and production art used in film. He also suggests that Programming.com offers "awesome"Maya and Renderman programming information. In addition, Keith writes that those interested in audio might take a look at the article, Making Music by Playing With Toys, which explores the art of circuit-bending and hacking of musical instruments to produce new sounds.

RANDOM LINKS: Product Branding

Random Links provides an opportunity to share online web resources. Listed sites may focus around a specific topic or be truly random. If you have a collection of hot links you'd like to share please let us know ().

Naming a product can be a challenge. How do you create a product name that will attract customers? How do you protect your product or service name from use by others? What are the legal issues related to selecting a name?

Welcome to the topic of product branding.

If you are developing a product or a service for a client, or yourself, you may want to consult the following web resources to learn more about the brand naming process. Each link provides a variety of useful information that we have found of value in our own work at Proscenia.

Naming Your Products by Yuko Watanabe. This paper presents the process of naming products or services. It is written in an outline form which makes it easy to access specific information related to product branding.

Snark Hunting: Naming and Branding Products in Popular Culture is a site "...dedicated to tracking what's going on in the naming and branding world, digging deeper to figure out what names or naming trends mean for the culture as a whole, and starting a conversation about a subject and a process that many people still find mystifying." The site provides a daily synopsis of issues related to product branding. It also provides an archive of past material as well as feature topics. You can subscribe to a newsletter which brings you daily information on this topic.

Cintra is a name branding company that works with clients to help make sure that the products and services they market attract the target customers they want. This site's "naming" section has some very useful ideas about the need for the creation of effective brand names. It provides case studies and suggests ways it, as a company, works with customers in helping develop a marketable product name.

Another brand naming organization is Igor. Igor's web site has an informative discussion presented in the article, "The best product & company names require the least advertising." This feature looks at six factors one needs to consider in developing an effective product name including: competitive analysis, product positioning, name development, trademark, creative testing, and name and tag line. A well chosen product name is the advertisement itself. Think for example of Coke, Kleenex, Xerox, Nike, and other brand names which by mentioning the name becomes an advertisement.

KnowThis.com provides Product Management, Branding & Packaging in Marketing. This is a page of links that connect to a variety of informative online articles and resources.

SoftwareMarketSolutions.com's Product Naming Resources provides links to web sites that let you check out everything from acronyms and abbreviations to information about trademarks.

DISCUSSION FEATURE:Marketing Your Web Site

Just because you've developed a fantastic web site doesn't mean that you'll have a steady stream of visitors. Getting customers to your site comes about through an on-going marketing campaign.

My research has located several online resources that I would encourage a web designer to visit. Some of the concepts you'll find may be very familiar and others very new. For example, did you know that targeted print advertising may be more effective in getting specific customers to a web site than a top ranking by a search engine?

There are many books and online discussion groups that focus on the topic of internet advertising and web promotion. For our purposes I am going to suggest a few informative resources that will be of help in planning any web marketing campaign. I hope that the information you find at these sites provide the bases for developing a marketing strategy appropriate to your needs.

Mircrosoft's Components of a Web Site Marketing Campaign is of the more informative references that I've found. It provides 11 suggested actions a web designer can take to make sure a site is located by potential users of that site's products or services. It is very well organized with clear suggestions as to actions one might take to create an effective marketing campaign.

NetPromote's Promotion 101 - Web Marketing Info Center provides a well written set of six steps for web promotion plus linked articles on such topics as; branding, banner advertising, e-mail marketing, web site optimization, and use of keywords and META tags.

An article by Dr. Ralph F. Wilson, The Web Marketing Checklist:29 Ways to Promote Your Web site expands upon suggestions made in the first two resources suggested above. Of particular interest to me was the suggestion that keyword be included in the first paragraph of your web site's text field. Search engines will often pick-up information about a site from that section of a page. Many other good ideas related to the design phase of a web site are included.

Webcom's article Marketing Your Organization's Web Site supplements our other listed resources. Of particular interest to is a link to Unacceptable Web Site Promotion Techniques that addresses certain actions for getting exposure that may be destructive (perhaps illegal).

MISCREANTS TARGET MAC OS X. Mac owners have long enjoyed a blissfully virus-free existence, but Apple's foray into digital music may have changed all that. A Trojan horse, dubbed MP3Concept or MP3Virus.gen, has wormed its way into circulation, masquerading as an MP3 file. "This is the first native Mac OS virus we've found," says Brian Davis, a sales manager for Intego, a Mac security firm that discovered the problem. The Trojan is benign, according to Intego. "This is likely a test Trojan showing these things are possible. There's definitely an open door we don't want to leave open," says Davis. The Trojan hides in ID tags of an MP3 file and is activated when clicked on by unwary users who think it's a music file. It then proceeds to access files in the System folder, and although it doesn't go beyond accessing at this point, Intego warns that it easily could be modified to perform more destructive acts, such as deleting files or hijacking a machine. The sudden appearance of the Trojan is attributable to Apple's higher profile, thanks to the growing popularity of its iTunes digital music store, says Davis: "Given Apple's previous market share, OS X wasn't a challenge. As Apple becomes more visible, it's more of an attractive target." (Wired.com 9 Apr 2004) http://www.wired.com/news/mac/0,2125,63000,00.html?tw=wn_tophead_2

WORD AND PICTURE IN A MEDIA AGE. Media expert Camille Paglia says in the academic journal Arion that education "has failed to adjust to the massive transformation in Western culture since the rise of electronic media... Interest in and patience with long, complex books and poems have alarmingly diminished not only among college students but college faculty in the U.S.The computer, with its multiplying forums for spontaneous free expression from e-mail to listservs and blogs, has increased facility and fluency of language but degraded sensitivity to the individual word and reduced respect for organized argument, the process of deductive reasoning. The jump and jitter of U.S. commercial television have demonstrably reduced attention span in the young.

The Web too, with its addictive unfurling of hypertext, encourages restless acceleration. Knowing how to 'read' images is a crucial skill in this media age, but the style of cultural analysis currently prevalent in universities is, in my view, counterproductive in its anti-media bias and intrusive social agenda." Paglia's conclusion: "The only antidote to the magic of images is the magic of words." (Arion Winter 2004) http://www.bu.edu/arion/Paglia_11.3/Paglia_Magic%20of%20Images.htm

GATES ENVISIONS 'ALMOST FREE' HARDWARE. Hardware costs will decline dramatically in the coming decade, predicts Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, leading the way for widespread adoption of cutting edge technologies like voice and handwriting recognition. "Ten years out, in terms of actual hardware costs, you can almost think of hardware as being free -- I'm not saying it will be absolutely free -- but in terms of the power of the servers, the power of the network will not be a limiting factor ... Many of the holy grails of computing that have been worked on over the last 30 years will be solved within this 10-year period, with speech being in every device and having a device that's like a tablet that you just carry around." (Reuters/CNet 30 Mar 2004) http://news.com.com/2-5181789.html

CRIMES, LIES AND CAMERA PHONES. Police authorities believe that the proliferation of picture phones will be very helpful for the apprehension of criminals. But will crime victims remember to take snapshots as they're being attacked? Emily Turrettini, editor for the site picturephoning.com, thinks the answer to that question is yes: "I think it will become a reflex -- it is for me. People will get used to that." But interesting legal issues about picture phones have also begun to arise. In a recent case in Pennsylvania, several basketball players were cleared of a rape accusation because the video tape on one team member's phone showed that the accusation of rape was false, and that the woman had accepted $1,000 from the players for her services; however, because the woman hadn't given permission for the video to be taken, there may have been a violation of Pennsylvania's wiretap laws. KAZAA OWNER WELCOMES SURVEY FINDINGS. Sharman Networks, owner of the Kazaa peer-to-peer software, has been quick to seize on the findings of a survey released in the U.S. on Monday which concluded that downloading music had no effect on album sales. In a media release issued last evening, Sharman chief executive Nicola Hemming said "We welcome sound research into the developing peer-to-peer industry and this study appears to have covered some interesting ground. The findings certainly support the vision we've always held for Kazaa and crystallizes our vision for the future of content distribution." The 2002 study was conducted jointly by researchers from Harvard Business School and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and used data from file-sharing services with 1.75 million downloads being studied over 17 weeks in autumn 2002. "Consider the possibilities if the record industry actually cooperated with companies like us instead of fighting," Ms. Hemming said. "We've offered content providers the opportunity to work with peer-to-peer customers for nearly two years, yet the record industry continues its narrow-minded strategy of litigation and legislation. THE OUTSOURCING PARADOX. A report prepared for the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) by Global Insight predicts that the continuing business trend of outsourcing white-collar jobs to low wage countries will ultimately lower inflation, create jobs and boost productivity in the U.S. Although the researchers believe that demand for U.S. software engineers will shrink through 2008, ITAA is emphasizing that outsourcing has damaged the job market far less than the dot-com meltdown of early 2000, when Internet startups, telecom companies and other companies eliminated as many as 268,000 positions. ITAA president Harris Miller says, "The myth is that we've started this long decline into the midnight of the technology work force. This report shows that, assuming the recovery continues, the number of IT jobs will actually increase." (AP/Los Angeles Times 30 Mar 2004) http://tinyurl.com/yunzp

OFFSHORING WORKS BOTH WAYS. Indian companies like Bangalore based Infosys, Wipro, etc. are opening up branches in the U.S. in a trend likely to turn the outsourcing
argument on its head. According to the CEO of Infosys, the move will help cut costs and increase efficiency of the company. Infosys Consulting, the U.S. based branch of Infosys, is expected to hire over 75 Americans this year and 500 in the next 3 years. CHIP IMPLANTED IN BRAIN TO AID COMPUTER USE BY DISABLED. With approval from the Food and Drug Administration, a company called Cyberkinetics Inc. is planning a clinical trial of a system in which a tiny microchip will be implanted in the brains of five paralyzed people so they can operate a computer by thought alone. (Several research groups have already implanted devices in monkeys, allowing them to control cursors on computer screens or move robot arms using their brainpower alone.) CalTech neuroscientist Richard A. Andersen says, "Among many people in the field, there's a feeling now that the time is here for moving the technology to test in humans." SONY E-BOOK GETS RAVE REVIEWS. Sony's Librié electronic reader is as easy on the eyes as the paper version, says New York Times reviewer Todd Zaun. The Librié screen is a collaborative effort between Philips Electronics and E Ink, and the letters appear "as sharp and clear as those on a printed page. The screen can be read from almost any angle, and it does not fade in bright light," says Zaun. Sony plans to begin selling the Librié in Japan next month for about $380, and buyers will be able to download e-books for less than $5 each from a Web site set up by Sony and a group of Japanese publishers. Sony plans to see how its Japanese market develops before it decides whether to expand to the U.S. and Europe. This seems to be a central connection to the media production opportunities in the Seattle area.

Seattle Times. Seattle area jobs not listed with Sakson and Tylor will be found in the Seattle Times online employment service.

Career Click .COM. This online service allows you to search individual, regional, or national Canadian newspapers for job positions. Remember that Canada has tight employment restrictions for non residents.
