Up Front Sunday Morning:

Congratulations to all those graduating this Spring. Well done! And happy Father's Day to all you dads.

Thanks to those of you who completed the Proscenia Newsletter questionnaire. The results weren't unexpected. Popular features included the Discussion, Careers, and Jobs sections of the newsletter. The feature Oregon media personalities was also of value in learning about who is doing what in the state. Events and tech news were less valued.

Most people spent an average of 10 minutes scanning the newsletter and some spent up to two hours if exploring the embedded links. Many archive the newsletter for future reference. We do also at the Proscenia Newsletter online archive. Some share the newsletter with others and teachers often send it on to students.

Content requests included more information about trends in the job market and information that extended reader knowledge of the film, video, and multimedia field.

Other News:

The Discovery Channel premiers the BBC documentary Walking with Cavemen tonight at 8:00PM. The program uses extensive computer graphics and 3D modeling.

These meetings are hosted by industry organizations and members, and their topics range from creative to technical. All meetings are open to visitors interested in learning more about MOPAN. There is no charge for attending. MOPAN publishes an informative monthly newsletter, Take 1, that keeps members informed about media producer activity in Oregon.

DID YOU KNOW? Facts about Oregon Media Personalities

The film "Umatilla," a documentary about chemical weapons produced by Bend, Oregon filmmakers R. J. McHatton and Hans Skjersaa, has won a silver award in the political film category at the 2003 Worldfest Huston

Umatilla is described as the scary, true story of a small American town living next to one of the world's largest stockpiles of mustard and nerve gas bombs, rockets and chemical weapons in the world. Caught in what can only be described as a catch-22, everyone in Umatilla is afraid because the nerve gas rockets are leaking.

DISCUSSION: Virtual Reality On the Web

Imagine visiting a web site featuring a beautiful Hawaiian beach scene of surf, sand, and swaying palms. Beautiful indeed. But you wish you could turn the camera so you could look up or down the beach, behind you, or perhaps overhead. All of this is possible using virtual reality (VR) software such as QuickTimeVR (QTVR) offered by Apple and compatible with all computer platforms.

There are two types of VR - panoramas and objects. The panorama places the viewer in the center of a space. These simulated 360 degree environments allow one to take a visitor on a tour of an historical building, hotel, or other site. Hot buttons facilitate one's ability to move from one room or location to another. Sound adds yet another dimension of involvement in the virtual.

The object VR allows you to view an object as if you were rotating it in your hand. You can examine a small piece of jewelry, a piece of sculpture, or other object.

Virtual environments are created using either photographic images or 3D software. The principle task is to take a number photographs in a 360† circle and stitching them together with VR software. As simple as that sounds it's quite a powerful photographic technique, which gives the end users a sense of actually being on location.

VR is currently used in a variety of situations including education, science, and the tourist and real estate business as examples. A destination resort can be explored and rooms and suites selected before a client even leaves home. Museums such as the Mueller-Schmidt house in Dodge City use VR to allow online viewers to visit the facility without traveling all the way to Kansas (this particular site was designed by Peter Monterubio, Proscenia Adjunct.)

There are a number of VR players. Of these Apple Computer's QuickTimeVR PTViewer is one of the best and is currently the industry standard for virtual tours. There are some Java players but critics note limitations.

Resources:

QuickTime VR Online Tutor is a self-paced course in creating QTVR panoramas, objects, and scenes. Key concepts include: understanding the photographic and geometric principles which underlie immersive imaging; familiarity with the nuances of QTVR development processes; and paying close attention to details. This course will help you develop and acquire these skills for creating QTVR media.

QuickTime VR Tutorials - Apple has provided a database of basic, interactive, and delivery tutorials that are well designed to get you using the software effectively.

The QTVR Tutorial Site contains information about how to use Apple's QuickTime VR with
Director and on the WWW.

QuickTime Virtual Reality. This site designed for "educators and just plain folk" is a rich collection of tips and ideas on how to work with VR.

Getting Started with VR. Nice introductory tutorial to techniques and equipment needed to create VR.

International QuickTime VR Association. An international organization of professionals who create and produce interactive, immersive images, that tell a story in a more dynamic way. Members include professional photographers, multimedia and web developers, artists, enthusiasts, students, and companies that support our technology with software and hardware.

Examples:

PanoScan. A commercial production company site with a portfolio of examples worth exploring.

Virtually Vancouver. Click on a map of Vancouver, B.C. and take a panoramic look at the location you want to visit.

Cubic VR With this option it allows a user or viewer to experience 6D instead of just 3D panoramics. In other words, up ,down and all sides. Uses images created with 3D software.

360 Tours. Market Pix, a Seattle based company, has a portfolio of VR tours on their web site. Also of interest is the rate scale they provide for clients who want panoramic images.

Mulcahys Long Island Pub.This is a nice interior example of a 360 degree panorama. I think it might have been a better "sales" promotion to actually have the pub with people - but this does show the facilities and what can be done with an inside shoot.

CN Tower Toronto. Here's one of my favorite places to be in a thunder storm. High above the city of Toronto you have a panoramic view of the city and the Great Lakes beyond.

FEATURED STUDIO OR SCHOOL:

The Gulf Islands Film and Television School is a media production training facility on Galiano Island, BC. Students live and work at the school in weekend, one-week, or month-long sessions. Sessions are organized by age group (12-14 yrs., 14-19, 19+ adult) and genre (drama, documentary, etc.). GIFTS emphasizes independent production, hands-on training, and respect for the creative process.

A central feature of the GIFTS curriculum is the emphasis on helping students become media artists, not just cogs in a huge entertainment industry. The school's focus is on independent, do-it-yourself rapid production. The result is an outpouring of creative energy and dedication that surprises nearly everyone who visits the facility or students’ movies. That’s why students have such a good reputation in the industry: once they’ve been to GIFTS, they know how to work long, hard hours, how to trust their instincts and how to troubleshoot on a tight schedule. PEOPLE WANT TO DO MORE WITH LESS. Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer senses a diminishing interest in technology for its own sake; in a memo written to share his thoughts with Microsoft employees he says, "As I talk with business customers, there is less passion and enthusiasm for technology, and greater focus on doing more with less." Of course, "more with less" could mean "more with less Microsoft and more Linux," and Ballmer's memo admits that the Linux and open source software movements present the company with a strong competitive challenge. BALLPARKS WELCOME CELL PHONES. Unlike most other public venues around the country, baseball parks are welcoming cell phones with open arms, encouraging patrons to order drinks and snacks through dialup food delivery services. Other features enable fans to bid on team memorabilia or predict a player's performance by phone. Twelve minor league teams have already taken the plunge and this summer, in-seat ordering is getting a Major League tryout when the Seattle Mariners and Atlanta Braves launch their services. Thus far, in-seat ordering has not been a big moneymaker, but with expenses spiraling ever upward, "We can throw so many things against the wall and see what sticks," says Mike Veeck, who owns five minor-league teams. This version of Streamripper is compatible with those systems running Mac OS X.

NORTHWEST

I'm currently limiting my Newsletter job searching to Oregon and South West Washington. However, for those interested in job positions elsewhere in the Northwest may I recommend the following

Sakson and Taylor. Most media jobs in the Seattle area seem to be promoted through Sakson and Taylor a Seattle based employment service that specializes in technical communication. The organization fills positions in animation, graphics, media, instructional design, writing and other areas. This seems to be a central connection to media production opportunities in the Seattle area.

Seattle Times. Seattle area jobs not listed with Sakson and Tayler will be found in the Seattle Times online employment service.

Career Click .COM. This online service allows you to search individual, regional, or national Canadian newspapers for job positions. Remember that Canada has tight employment restrictions for non residents.

Vancouver Sun . The Vancouver Sun provides an online employment section that lists jobs in that great city of the North. These same jobs can be found on Career Click. Com listed aboved.
