A worldwide calendar for new music, electronic music and the media arts. You'll find hundreds of events listed, as well as articles, interviews, and other writings. • Online Volunteering - United Nations. If you have some extra time to devote to volunteer work and devote your production skills to good causes, you might consider online volunteering for the United Nations. Volunteers from all over the world are helping organizations that serve communities in developing countries -- but without leaving their own. Online Volunteers translate documents, write articles, research data, build web sites, mentor young people, design logos, and engage in many other projects to benefit organizations serving people in the developing world. Online volunteers are volunteers without frontiers. To learn more about these programs check out the United Nations Volunteers Program. • Script Writing Competition. The National Audio Theatre Festivals' 2004-2005 Script Competition deadline is November 15, 2004. Audio theatre is a unique and collaborative medium. Like any good theatre, audio (or radio) theater always begins with a well-written, perceptive, entertaining script. Use of sound and appropriateness to the medium is considered. Length 30 minutes. Find more information on the National Audio Theatre Festival's web site. •Calling All Filmmakers. Portland, OR. The 48 Hour Film Project brings its wild, sleepless weekend of filmmaking to Portland, August 20-22. The 48 Hour Film Project asks filmmaking teams to make a movie from scratch - teams write, shoot, edit and score original music - all in just 48 hours. On Friday night, teams draw their genre from a hat, and receive a character, prop and line of dialogue that must appear in the film. On Sunday night they race to the drop off location with a finished film. The project is open to pros and amateurs alike. All films will be screened at the beautiful Hollywood Theater, August 25 & 26, with the best of Portland screening at The Hollywood on September 10. The wining Portland film will compete against other films to represent Portland at the 48 Film Project's national screening (2003 films screened at South by Southwest film festival), and will compete for valuable prizes including AVID editing software. The 48 Hour Film Project is held in 15 cities in the US and around the world, including New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Copenhagen and Auckland, New Zealand. The 48 Hour Film Project’s mission is to advance filmmaking and promote filmmakers. Through its festival/competition, the Project encourages filmmakers and would-be filmmakers to get out there and make movies. The tight deadline of 48 hours puts the focus squarely on the filmmakers--emphasizing creativity and teamwork. While the time limit places an unusual restriction on the filmmakers, it is also liberating by putting an emphasis on “doing” instead of “talking”. Over 25,000 people are expected to attend this year's conference from over 75 countries. More than 230 multimedia companies will exhibit hardware and software products. This major conference offers courses, panels, workshops, paper presentations, keynote addresses, and festival awards. Of particular interest to our readers is the Computer Animation Festival. This presents the world's most innovative, imaginative works in computer graphics and interactive techniques: animation, visualization, simulation, visual effects, and technical imagery produced by adventurers who blend art and science into unique visual experiences. The Computer Animation Festival jury presents selected works in the Electronic Theater (matinée and evening shows) and the Animation Theater (throughout the week). A must attend event for media developers. True West Cinema Festival, 12- 15 August. An annual film festival dedicated to the advancement of independently produced feature and short subject films whose creator's talents have spawned from or who's subject celebrates the landscape and spirit of the Western United States. True West will take place at several venues in Boise Idaho's downtown corridor. Feature and short film screenings will be hosted by Boise's greatest independent and foreign film champion, The Flicks.
