"To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk." Thomas Edison

Sunday Morning NW:

It is that time of year when graphic designers, web developers, and multimedia specialists take wing and fly to Los Angeles for the 2004 SIGGRAPH Conference.

This year's event, August 8 - 12, will attract nearly 25,000 participants from around the world for five days of learning, sharing, and exploring new computer graphic and interactive media techniques, programs, and technology.

SIGGRAPH 2004
LOS ANGELES

SIGGRAPH's stated mission is to be the "... premier annual conference on leading-edge theory and practice of computer graphics and interactive techniques."

Proscenia staff have attended several of the conferences and highly recommend this event, especially for students, interns, and new producers.

Participants will find courses, workshops, panel presentations, exhibitor tech-talks, vendor exhibition hall displays, media theaters, computer animation, and presentations. This venue provides an opportunity to compare ones' own skills and knowledge with others in the field and to network with colleagues.

Of special interest to multimedia designers is the SIGGRAPH Electronic Theater. The theater presents the world's most innovative, imaginative works in computer graphics and interactive techniques: animation, visualization, simulation, visual effects, and technical imagery produced by adventurers who blend art and science into unique visual experiences (see trailer).

This year's Keynote Address will be by science fiction writer Bruce Sterling. In his speech, "When Blobjects Rule the Earth," Sterling will speculate on what happens when graphic simulation conquers the world. Sterling is the author of nine novels, three of which were selected as New York Times Notable Books of the Year.

Attending SIGGRAPH can be expensive. Early registration is always encouraged - especially if you want all the benefits of a full conference. For example, Student registration by July 2, was $395. At the conference it will be $500. If you're not a student the early registration for a non-member was $825. At the conference expect to pay $1,100.00.

There are other ways to attend such as visiting only the exhibition hall only for $75.00 or, there are one day registration opportunities at a variety of fee levels based on how you want to participate.

SIGGRAPH provides a number of student opportunities that should be applied for early in the year (plan now for 2005). SIGGRAPH Volunteers receive a variety of benefits as members of the conference staff.

We hope to have a Proscenia Staff report to share with readers after the conference.

SIGGAPH is the Association of Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group - Graphics.
