August 17 - Vol 2. No. 33

Up Front Sunday Morning:

Today's Newsletter introduces two new features. We begin a series of interviews with Northwest media designers with University of Oregon educator Todd Kesterson who shares his thoughts about media design and professional preparation. We've also added a directory of services provided by newsletter subscribers. The directory illustrates the wide array of skills and knowledge available within our readership.

Reader Ben Beekman in responding to last week's Discussion Section on "7 Tips for Interface" suggests that, Turning the Tables or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Web Standards is one of the most compelling articles he has read on why the time is right to ditch tables for web page design, and to start using CSS-based layouts instead. He notes, "I used to feel the same way about style sheets, and used tables for all my web-based layouts-- but now that I've adjusted to CSS, I completely agree with the author's comparison of using tables to lay out web pages being like using Microsoft Excel to do page layout for print."

Cheers, Gary

Proscenia Newsletter Interview: Todd Kesterson

Proscenia is very pleased to begin a series of interviews featuring Northwest media designers .Today's guest is designer and educator Todd Kesterson.

PR: Please tell us about your current professional work and activities in the field of multimedia and design.
TK: Currently I teach in the Multimedia Design program at the University of Oregon. I am also engaged in personal artistic projects and am co-founder of a company developing content for an on-line interactive virtual world project. Much of this work involves 3D imaging and all has an emphasis on story.

PR: What experiences early on in your life sparked an interest in design and media?
TK: I always enjoyed the visual storytelling featured in animated films and live action sci-fi adventures such as Star Wars (which came out when I was in grade school). The interactive text game "Adventure" (the first text "interactive fiction" game. Ed.) also lured me into the video game realm when I was in grade school with its promise of interactive exploratory space. So I was heavily influenced by both rich linear story content as well as the potential of interactive narrative.

PR: What classes or experiences did you have as a student that were of the most benefit in facilitating your own work and why?
TK: I took a class called Experimental Animation with Ken O'Connell when I was an undergraduate student at U of O. That class really opened my eyes to the potential of animation beyond what I had seen in mainstream media.

PR: Are there classes or experiences you think a student should consider today in preparing for work in media?
TK: I'm a firm believer in knowing how the media has evolved, so I strongly recommend classes in art history, film history, new media studies, etc. The more we understand about our past in relation to political, social, and technological developments, the better prepared we are to shape the future.

PR: Do you have a favorite designer or agency that you would encourage students to check out?
TK: There are many... One relatively local commercial group whose work I particularly enjoy is Second Story in Portland (www.secondstory.com). They bring a strong sense of design and story content to all of their work and provide the viewer room to explore.

PR: What professional activities or associations do you think are important for students to know about and in which to become involved?
TK: If you're involved in 3D imaging/animation then Siggraph is an important conference to attend. Conferences like this provide opportunities to see what is (and is not) happening in a particular field. They also allow you to make contacts and learn from professionals from commercial and academic realms.

PR: What has been the most satisfying thing about your career in design?
TK: Both professional brainstorming and working with university students have been hi-lights to date. The creative interaction that can occur when a class is going well is a wonderful experience. Similarly, the collaboration that occurs in a small professional design team during brainstorming sessions is a real thrill.

PR: Any other thoughts you'd like to share?

TK: Take all the classes you can and get into and open yourself to as much life experience as you possibly can. It all helps to shape you and define yourself as an artist and human being. It's important to identify what you want from your entire life--not just your career, since everything you do is related. Learning about yourself is really where personal growth occurs--and that only comes through real life trial and error.

DISCUSSION: Protecting Your Work Through Copyright

In an age when it seems as though every Tom, Dick, and Jane is ripping off software and music from the Internet the idea of copyright may seem insignificant until it comes to your own work being stolen, used, modified, and often sold as someone else's.

The question of copyright becomes important when you have designed, developed, and produce a product that generates income for you or your company.

"Copyright is a form of protection provided by the laws of the United States to the authors of "original works of authorship," including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works. This protection is available to both published and unpublished works." The law generally gives the owner of copyright the exclusive rights to do and to authorize others to do specific tasks with a given work including reproduction, distribution, performance, and the preparing of derivative works based upon the original.

Copyrighted material protects "original works of authorship" that are fixed in a tangible form of expression for example a film, photograph, or CD ROM. "The fixation need not be directly perceptible so long as it may be communicated with the aid of a machine or device." Copyrightable works include the following categories:

- literary works;
- musical works, including any accompanying words
- dramatic works, including any accompanying music
- pantomimes and choreographic works
- pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works
- motion pictures and other audiovisual works
- sound recordings
- architectural works

To learn more about copyright and how you can protect your own original work go online and check out this guide to copyright: (http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ1.html).

TECHNOLOGY NEWS:

JUDGE THROWS OUT RIAA SUBPOENAS. A federal judge in Boston has rejected subpoenas filed by the Recording Industry Association of America last month as part of its nationwide crackdown on digital music file-sharing. The subpoenas targeted students at Boston College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who used various screen names to share songs online. In his ruling, Judge Joseph L. Tauro said that under federal rules, subpoenas issued in Washington cannot be served in Massachusetts. The RIAA called the ruling "a minor procedural issue" but declined to say whether it would refile in Boston. SOFTWARE TO IDENTIFY COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS. Media companies often have problems understanding what they own -- i.e.,what footage, images and other items they have the right to distribute, andwhere those rights apply; these problems are then complicated by the factthat each individual segment of a video may be covered by different
restrictions on where it can be shown, what it can be used for and when itcan be sold. Software called RightsLine, which is able to track thoserestrictions down to a single frame of film, is now being used by NationalGeographic Television & Film to streamline the licensing process and inspiremore creative uses of its footage. At the National Geographic site,
customers will be able to search through a digitized collection of about100,000 videos, view and select the footage that suits their needs, and fillout a license application online. (Los Angeles Times 13 Aug 2003). Source:NewsScanDaily

To this I would add Skills Net. Skills Net has an extensive collection of material related to working in the media industry.

NORTHWEST

I'm currently limiting my Newsletter job searching to Oregon and South West Washington. However, for those interested in job positions elsewhere in the Northwest may I recommend the following

Sakson and Taylor. Most media jobs in the Seattle area seem to be promoted through Sakson and Taylor a Seattle based employment service that specializes in technical communication. The organization fills positions in animation, graphics, media, instructional design, writing and other areas. This seems to be a central connection to the media production opportunities in the Seattle area.

Seattle Times. Seattle area jobs not listed with Sakson and Tayler will be found in the Seattle Times online employment service.

Career Click .COM. This online service allows you to search individual, regional, or national Canadian newspapers for job positions. Remember that Canada has tight employment restrictions for non residents.

Vancouver Sun . The Vancouver Sun provides an online employment section that lists jobs in that great city of the North. These same jobs can be found on Career Click. Com listed aboved.
