The Portland Documentary and eXperimental Film Festival is a five-day exposition dedicated to showcasing new innovative works of film and video. Focusing on non-narrative works that go against the grain of mainstream entertainment, the PDX Film Festival is looking for artistic, underground, quirky and challenging work that reflects contemporary culture, documents historic oddities, and is otherwise generally unclassifiable. Categories: experimental, documentary, underground. All lengths accepted. Formats: 35mm, 16mm, Beta SP. Preview on VHS or DVD. $15 entry fee. Photoshare Photo Contest
For photos illustrating life in developing countries...
Deadline: October 1 2004
The contest is sponsored by The INFO Project (Information and Knowledge for Optimal Health Project) and Nikon. Amateurs and professionals from anywhere in the world are invited to submit photos of programmes in action, pictures illustrating the realities of urban and rural life in developing countries or snapshots from your personal travels, volunteer service, or work experience.
Participants may submit one photo per category:

Photoshare Contributor of the Year:
Nikon 3.2Megapixel CoolPix 3700 Digital Camera with a 3X Zoom Lens, USB Interface, Audio/Video Output, Rechargeable Li-ion Battery, Nikon View Software, and 16MB SD memory card.
Photoshare Image of the Year:
Matted and framed photo.
All category winners will receive a certificate. Winning photos and photographers will be featured at the INFO booth at the American Public Health Association (APHA) conference in Washington D.C., November 2004. Entries and winners will also be featured on the Photoshare and INFO websites, e-list, and promotional materials.
Photoshare is a service of The INFO Project helping non-profit organisations communicate global health and development issues through photography. The Photoshare collection, consisting primarily of photos taken by public health professionals in the field, contains more than 7,000 images illustrating the realities of urban and rural life in developing countries, as well as global efforts to improve and save lives. The INFO Project is a programme of the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health/Center for Communication Programs which serves many major government institutions and international NGOs.

Online Volunteering - United Nations. If you have some extra time to devote to volunteer work and devote your production skills to good causes, you might consider online volunteering for the United Nations. Volunteers from all over the world are helping organizations that serve communities in developing countries -- but without leaving their own. Online Volunteers translate documents, write articles, research data, build web sites, mentor young people, design logos, and engage in many other projects to benefit organizations serving people in the developing world. Script Writing Competition. The National Audio Theatre Festivals' 2004-2005 Script Competition deadline is November 15, 2004. Audio theatre is a unique and collaborative medium. Like any good theatre, audio (or radio) theater always begins with a well-written, perceptive, entertaining script. Use of sound and appropriateness to the medium is considered. Length 30 minutes. Microcinema International has been curating, exhibiting, promoting, and distributing the international moving image arts since 1996. The monthly screening program, Independent Exposure, will be celebrating its tenth season in 2005, submit your work(s) now to be considered for a special year-long screening celebration that will tour throughout the International Microcinema Network. The Design Festival: The Value of Design. Portland, OR. October 7-17 with a state wide juried exhibit of design works, keynote speakers, an awards ceremony and other events. An exhibit will present the best design works from all of Oregon and SW Washington. A national jury will select the top three works in: Architecture, Interior Architecture, Landscape, and Public Environments.
