Up Front Sunday Morning

The Proscenia Newsletter is now a web-based publication. We hope this solves an on-going problem with some reader's inability to access attached documents. It will also allow us to add photographs and multimedia as needed. Eventually, we may develop a whole new layout and multi-page format. All newsletters will continue to be archived as they have in the past. Let us know your thoughts on this change.

Michael Moore, the Academy-Award-winning director of Bowling for Columbine, will speak at Portland's Memorial Coliseum on October 23 at 7 p.m. Tickets for "An Evening with Michael Moore" are $29, $20, and $15; a limited number of tickets are available to students for $5 with valid student ID and can be purchased at any Ticketmaster outlet. The event is sponsored by Portland State University's Continuing Education program.

Nearly 1,000 micromovies were submitted for the first-ever online Ten Second Films competition. Candide Media recently announced the winners of the competition. New York City artist Sorrel Ahlfeld took home the $1,000 First Prize for "Walking Haiku," which uses its precious seconds to paint an emotion-drenched portrait of romantic yearning. Second Prize went to "Rollerskates!" in which a young woman uses a skyscraper like a ski jump to gleefully launch herself onto the green lawn of Bryant Park, in the middle of Manhattan. And Third Prize went to "The 7th Distraction," a sly story of a driver who fails to heed an unusually accurate traffic report on his car's radio.

Did you know that the Library of Congress provides both live and archived cybercasts? Cyber LC makes available the opportunity to see and hear some of the brightest minds of our time over the Internet.

If you are interested in web design an interview with Canadian graphic artist Julie Laframboise may be informative. Laframboise is a graphic designer with NIVA Inc., an Ottawa-based communications firm. The move to convert hardcopy documents into Web documents, accessible by virtually anyone, is creating a demand for designers who can apply elements of good design to the new medium. Julie shares her Web-document design experience.

Reader Terry Kneen sent along an item about a new wrist watch with built-in flash memory drive now being distributed on line by Meritline. The watch comes with either a 128MB ($70) or 256MB ($130) storage capacity. The watch plugs into both Macintosh and Window computers using a USB port. The external drive appears on the computer desktop just as would any external drive.

The Christophers have announced winners of the Sixteenth Annual Video Contest For College Students about which I posted notice a few months back. Lisa Thompson, a Broadcast Journalism major at the University of Southern California, won the first prize of $3,000 for her documentary, “Hope for Mali,” a look at the volunteers of Medicine for Mali, a non-profit organization.

OpenEar Project Report. Proscenia's attentive listening skills disc progresses as Ken Loge completes programming for the Beta version of "What's That Sound" activity. This is one of the more complicated modules on the disc given the amount of animation, data access required, and sound that will be used.

Beta field testing begins soon.

DISCUSSION: Conceptual/Lead Designer

A Conceptual or Lead Designer is an individual who works on the overall conceptualization and design of a media project. Projects may include a game, web site, interactive CD ROM, film, video, or other type of multimedia product.

A person taking on the role of Lead Designer assumes a high level of responsibility. He or she is the creative driving force behind the conceptualization of a product.

It is the task of the designer to take a basic idea and develop it into a planning document that details every step required in the production process. This forms an structural plan, or blue print, for all the effort to follow.

The Lead Designer, working with the production team, shapes the project and aids in the creation of the schedule, resource allocation and time assignments. The designer will sometimes take on the role of project manager and assume responsibility for guiding the production team through the design and development process. This includes assigning tasks that include artwork and programming.

The conceptual/lead designer is responsible for ensuring that the product a studio produces meets the client's requirements. This includes gathering specific information within the project cycle and designing solutions to meet the needs of the client or user. This requires good communication skills with clients and an understanding of design and technical issues that the team must address in the design process.

The Designer constantly evaluates the project's over-all look, feel, and aesthetics. This may include, for example, a "fun factor" when a project is designed for entertainment purposes. The Lead Designer will divide his or her time between design work and supervising the work of the design staff working on the project.

Those who become Conceptual or Lead Designers come from a variety of professional experiences within the industry. Give the field of multimedia designers need to have:

  • A vivid imagination that is feed by a strong curiosity about the world around him or her. Such designers enjoy exploring ideas and have a passion for searching out new perspectives and processes. This skill contributes to making a product informative, exciting, and an effectively pleasing experience.
  • The skill to transform a verbal idea into a multimedia experience. This requires an understanding of users and how they will interact with the product being developed. Skills in interface layout and designing the overall structure of a project are needed.
  • The ability to thrive off a challenge and enjoy designing solutions.
  • An understanding of design tools and techniques. This includes a knowledge of technical restrictions and specifications of the hardware and software used.
  • Strong management and communication skills. This includes the ability to work with others and to manage tasks the production team must accomplish.

Weather Depot 1.21 [Windows Operating System] As a quote commonly misattributed to Mark Twain goes, "Everyone talks about the weather, but no one does a thing about it." NEW CALIFORNIA LEGISLATION FRIENDLY TO ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY
California Gov. Gray Davis says he will sign new legislation that is friendly to the entertainment industry and aimed at stopping the theft of film and music. Cary Sherman, president of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), is pleased with the legislation: "The piracy problem is severe and we're seeing it in terms of layoffs. We are really grateful for anything that can be done to deal with this problem... Thousands of people in the recording industry have lost their jobs, artists are having trouble being signed ... retailers are going out of business." (AP/San Jose Mercury News 26 Sep 2003)

TERMINATION OF INFORMATION AWARENESS OFFICE. The Pentagon's controversial Information Awareness Office, which had been headed by Admiral. John M. Poindexter, has been closed down by Congress, though a few of its projects will be shifted elsewhere within the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Senator Ron Wyden (D, OR) says:"They turned the lights out on the programs Poindexter conceived. From a standpoint of civil liberties, this is a huge victory." Wyden says the programs that survived are mainly training initiatives, such as war-gaming software that help agencies analyze evidence and communicate with one another. MICROSOFT LAUDED FOR CRACKING DOWN ON CHAT ROOMS Child advocates are applauding a decision by Microsoft's MSN online service to crack down on its free chat rooms. Ernie Allen of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children says: "There is no question but that chat rooms generally tend to be very dangerous places for children." MSN's move is intended to force users to identify themselves, so that they can be held accountable for their actions, and so that MSN can contact them when it gets complaints. Of course, ending support for free foreign chat rooms will also help Microsoft reduce MSN's financial loss. Technology analyst Rob Helm explains: "Maintaining any kind of online service is expensive. Putting chat on paid status in the U.S, and turning it off elsewhere is a step toward making MSN profitable." However, Microsoft spokesman Lisa Gurry says that cost savings were "not a factor" in the Microsoft chat-room decision. "This really is all about looking at delivering the safest online experience for folks using our services." iTUNES MEETS ITS MUSICMATCH Building on the popularity of Apple's iTunes Music Store, software maker MusicMatch is launching a Windows-compatible music download service offering songs from leading record labels with the fewest restrictions so far on copying and portability. The new software allows customers to purchase songs for 99 cents apiece without having to enroll in a monthly subscription program, and users may copy the tracks onto as many as three different computers and transfer them to portable music players, as well as burn as many as 5 CDs with the same set of songs. MusicMatch president Peter D. Csathy says it took months of negotiations with the labels to agree on those terms. A digital music store "is DOA when you have complex usage rules," says Csathy. Those terms are likely to soon be offered by others targeting the Windows market, which represents more than 90% of computer users. VANDALS DIVERTING COMPUTERS TO $5-A-MINUTE PORN SITES Network vandals have been exploiting a security gap in Microsoft's Internet Explorer software and using it to connect their computers to $5-a-minute porn lines by sending computer users to sites that change a computer's dial-up settings, connecting it to expensive long distance telephone numbers instead of the user's ISP. The original hole in Internet Explorer was discovered last month, and Microsoft issued a software patch to fix it, there but new variations of the malicious code seem to be evading the existing patch. TORVALDS: GEEKY KIDS NEED DATES Asked how to end virus and worm attacks, Linux creator Linus Torvalds told an interviewer: "When you have people who hook up these machines that weren't designed for the Internet, and they don't even want to know about all the intricacies of network security, what can you expect? We get what we have now: a system that can be brought down by a teenager with too much time on his hands. Should we blame the teenager? Sure, we can point the finger at him and say, 'Bad boy!' and slap him for it. Will that actually fix anything? No. The next geeky kid frustrated about not getting a date on Saturday night will come along and do the same thing without really understanding the consequences. So either we should make it a law that all geeks have dates -- I'd have supported such a law when I was a teenager -- or the blame is really on the companies who sell and install the systems that are quite that fragile." (New York Times Magazine 28 Sep 2003) http://partners.nytimes.com/2003/09/28/magazine/WLN104109.html

ON-DEMAND DIGITAL VIDEO SERVICE The Walt Disney is beginning a new service, MovieBeam, that sends whole movies in digital form over the same broadcast spectrum already used by TV stations. The movies are stored in the hard drive of a set-top box and can then be viewed at any time (unlike movies ordered on cable television for viewing at preset times). MovieBeam's set-top units come with about a hundred movies already stored and available for viewing, and then ten new releases are transmitted each week to the unit, replacing ten of the older titles. Customers will be charged a $6.99 monthly rental fee for the set-top unit and between $3.99 and $2.49 for each movie they watch. NORTHWEST

I'm currently limiting my Newsletter job searching to Oregon and South West Washington. However, for those interested in job positions elsewhere in the Northwest may I recommend the following

Sakson and Taylor. Most media jobs in the Seattle area seem to be promoted through Sakson and Taylor a Seattle based employment service that specializes in technical communication. The organization fills positions in animation, graphics, media, instructional design, writing and other areas. This seems to be a central connection to the media production opportunities in the Seattle area.

Seattle Times. Seattle area jobs not listed with Sakson and Tayler will be found in the Seattle Times online employment service.

Career Click .COM. This online service allows you to search individual, regional, or national Canadian newspapers for job positions. Remember that Canada has tight employment restrictions for non residents.

Vancouver Sun . The Vancouver Sun provides an online employment section that lists jobs in that great city of the North. These same jobs can be found on Career Click. Com listed aboved.
