Up Front Sunday Morning:

We begin this Sunday with a bit of humor. The Internet has many bogus web sites. An example is SkyHigh Airlines created by the folks at Alaska. It offers visitors an elaborate series of jokes and pranks that make the fake site more engaging than many real ones. Alaska Airlines satirically takes aim at its' no-frills competitors with good fun in mind. Take a look and enjoy the flight. I will be writing more about bogus sites and the issues some can create in a future Discussion feature.

Chicago experimental film maker Ray Harmon will present his work Monday in the University of Oregon's Erb Memorial Union 1222 E. 13th., at 8 p.m. The film, "The Three Stigmata of Marshal McLuhan" will be shown followed by a discussion period.

A panel of of producers and directors meeting at the recent Aspen Filmfest noted a decline in the quality of film making. According to an AP article producer Sydney Pollack observed that the American public is driven by a short attention span and suggested that if the clothes don't come off fast enough or the guns aren't blazing they become bored.

Apple is shipping Mac OS X v10.3 "Panther." "With over 150 new features, Panther pushes the envelope on stability, simplicity, power, and usability..." according to a recent Apple Newsletter.

Avid video editing software has been a standard in the industry for several years. Now other companies are beginning to edge in on the market. Avid,to meet this challenge,is providing a free version of its software which can be downloaded from the web. According to the company's web site,"Avid Free DV is feature-streamlined, standalone software designed to give a single user the opportunity to creatively explore the Avid editing environment. It includes basic video and audio editing capabilities, up to two streams of real-time effects and support for both Windows XP and Macintosh OS X platforms." The company figures once you've tried it you'll want to upgrade.

Those interested in the internet and human behavior should check out the Cyber Behavior Research Center. This research center "... attempts to explore the impact behavior has on shaping the Web and to detect novel behaviors that emerge as a result of this newer communications technology. The general guideline for inclusion of resources...is information that explores the reciprocal relationship between behavior and the Web, not one or the other as separate entities." Of particular interest to designers may be the section on Human-Web Interaction.

I received a question about how to save the Proscenia Newsletter for later reading now that it is in online format. Each browser has a "save as" feature by which a web page can be downloaded to the desktop or specific folder. I've tested this feature using Safari, Explorer, Netscape, and iCab. Of the three, Explorer gives you the complete package. In other words, it downloads not only the formatted page but the associated graphics as well.

I like to include interviews whenever possible in the newsletter. Some are original with Proscenia and others, like today's, are available on the internet. If you have an interest in film music you may enjoy this interview with Jerry Goldsmith. Goldsmith has composed the music for Planet of the Apes,Patton,Papillon,Boys from Brazil and over 170 other films.

One of the things that distracts me while at my computer preparing this newsletter is the view I enjoy out my window. I thought I would share this recent panorama of Eugene with you.

DISCUSSION: Searching for Pictures

Few of us would remember what a tractor looks like if asked to draw one for use on a web site. The human brain is good at recalling the general outline of an object but it isn't that efficient when it comes to remembering small details. We often need to rely on visual references when preparing illustrations. The Internet is a valuable resource for locating needed photographs, drawings, paintings, and other visual reference material.

There are perhaps five basic strategies for finding images on the Internet.

Keyword searches are the most common way to locate resources. Web images use the file extensions "jpg" or "gif" added to a name. A search using "tractor.jpg" or "tractor.gif" will produce links to many tractor images. Most searches are successful when combining a single word, such as "bridge" with a commonly used extension.

Using an image search engine such as those provided by Google or Yahoo will scour the web locating images not only by the jpg and gif extension but also will look for the use of the "Alt" code that verbally describe a picture. The code "IMG SRC" (image source) is also looked for by search engines.

Some web sites employ individuals who manually search for images and catalog or classify each with descriptive information. The Amazing Picture Machine is one example. It has 25 categories which range from rock music to civil war people, places and things. Some cataloged sites, given the labor involved, will charge a fee. Others are provided as a free service.

There are also image banks that are constructed from the beginning to provide visual resource material. The American Memory Project by the Library of Congress is one such source. The Library of Congress has extensive collections of prints, slides, and other images and it has spent considerable effort to organize these materials as searchable data bases.

Museums and art resource web sites also provide image collections primarily of painting, illustration, and graphic design. The WebMuseum, Paris is one example.

Proscenia has compiled a Image Search and Database page for use by Interns, students and other needing to access images. Here you will find most of the available search engines that will find illustrations, paintings, photographs, and other images resources on the net. We have also included links to photo collections at museums and other institutions. All images you will find are copyrighted and so care must be given to following copyright laws when pictures are used off the net.

NEIL POSTMAN DIES.
Neil Postman, the New York University communications and media expert, has died at the age of 72. A critic of mass media and "technopoly," he was provocative, wise, witty and kind. In the judgment of NewsScan, one of his best books is the collection of essays, "Conscientious Objections: Stirring Up Trouble About Language, Technology and Education." COMPUTERS FOR THE LIVING ROOM Microsoft, Dell, Gateway, and other hardware companies are announcing PCs using Windows XP Media Center software that turns a computer into a digital entertainment system allowing user to watch TV shows, play digital music collections, listen to the radio, review photos, watch DVDs and buy music over the Internet. Microsoft cofounder and chairman Bill Gates says: "Our goal is to create software breakthroughs that break down the boundaries between the different devices people use in the home and make the most out of all the technology available today. The Media Center PC is our next step in this vision, a new kind of computer that simplifies everyday life -- enabling the TV, stereo, and other devices (to) work together with a single remote, and getting TV shows, movies, pictures and music into every room of the house." Michael Gartenberg of Jupiter Research says: "It really feels like much more of a consumer electronics type of product as opposed to a PC product." ULTRAFAST MOTORS DRIVE 'TALKING' APPLIANCES James Dyson, inventor of the bagless "dual cyclone" vacuum cleaner, says the cheap-but-ultrafast motors developed for next-generation models have enough computing power left over to create "intelligent" appliances that can make their own diagnostic calls to manufacturers when something goes wrong. "When something's broken the call center always wants to know the serial number and model number -- and you've never got it to hand," says Dyson. "But with this technology, you will simply hold down the vacuum's 'on' button and put the telephone receiver next to a speaker, and in our call center here we'll get the entire history of the machine's motor, what model it is, when it was built and what temperature conditions it's been used in." Dyson's prototype X020 vacuum cleaner boasts a "switched reluctance" motor that runs at an ultrafast 100,00 revolutions per minute, requiring a small eight-bit microcomputer chip to control it. In order to exploit the spare memory in that chip, engineers came up with the ideal of storing information that could then be phoned into a repair center. REDUCTION ADVERSELY IMPACTS HIGH-TECH RECRUITMENT The U.S. has sharply reduced (from 195,000 to 65,000) the number of H-1B visas granted for skilled foreign professionals, a change which drastically complicates the business environment for Indian software services companies that provide workers for American companies. The H-1B visa program allows foreigners to work in the United States for up to six years, and has done much to contribute to the growth of Silicon Valley. The American Immigration Lawyers' Association says there are about 900,000 H-1B employees in the U.S., of which 35-45% are from India. The reduced visa limit is expected gradually to diminish the U.S.'s ability to attract the most talented workers, and as the economy continues to recover, the country may see an even more acute shortage of skilled workers. Laxman Badiga of Indian software exporter Wipro says: "If there are no visas to bring talent to the U.S., American companies will eventually say, 'Let's go to India where the resources are.'" (New York Times 1 Oct 2003) http://partners.nytimes.com/2003/10/01/business/worldbusiness/01visa.html

WIRELESS SIGNALS COULD MAKE YOU SICK Radio signals used for next-generation (3G) wireless services can cause headaches and nausea, according to a study conducted on behalf of the Netherlands ministries for Economic Affairs, Health and Telecommunications. The study compared the impact of radiation from base stations used for current wireless services with those for new 3G networks, which transfer data at a faster rate. "If the test group was exposed to third-generation base station signals there was a significant impact. They felt tingling sensations, got headaches and felt nauseous," says a spokeswoman for the Dutch Economics Ministry. The Dutch government said follow-up research was needed. Previous research on health effects of mobile phones, primarilysecond-generation, has been inconclusive, but a long-term study conducted by the International Agency on Research on Cancer is expected to yield results next year. INTEL'S ANDY GROVE WORRIED ABOUT U.S. LEAD IN HIGH TECH Telling the attendees at a global technology summit "I'm here to be the skunk at your garden party," Andrew S. Grove, Intel co-founder and current chairman, said that U.S. dominance in the software and technology service businesses is under siege by countries like China and India that offer cheap labor costs and strong incentives for new financial investment. Grove noted that India's thriving software industry, which does a steadily increasing proportion of the software and services work for U.S. companies, could surpass the United States in software and tech-service jobs by 2010. Grove said that the U.S. had no public policy to deal with this situation, nor had he found that any of the presidential candidates had recognized the problem. He also said the U.S. lags dangerously behind in popular use of high-speed Internet connections, as well as funding for science and technology research and education. NAPSTER BACK, WITH BLESSING OF RECORDING INDUSTRY The rapper Ludacris is hailing the return of Napster, which had been forced out of business by lawsuits brought against the once-free music file-swapping service by the recording industry: "To see them come back and do it right, it means the world to the music business. It's a legitimate, cool, fair service that can and will bring artists and fans back together." The new service is being formally released Oct. 29th by Roxio, whose chief executive, Chris Gorog, says: "We have been deeply focused on the liberation of online music from the PC." Napster 2.0 allows subscribers to tune in to the songs that other users are listening to, look at what others have downloaded, and send songs and playlists to other subscribers. MUSIC INDUSTRY CRACKDOWN SPAWNS 'CYBER-SPEAKEASIES' Music download enthusiasts are flocking to 21st century versions of "speakeasies" --high-tech clubs that offer encrypted software designed to shield users from identification and prosecution by a zealous recording industry. Coincidentally, the software now being served up may have broader appeal in the business world as well. "The software that users are moving toward, it has characteristics that businesses need -- which is a high degree of privacy, a high degree of security and the ability to handle large files," says New York University telecommunications professor Clay Shirky. "Thanks to the RIAA, ease of use surrounding encryption technologies, which was never a big deal before, is a big deal now." In addition to old favorites such as Kazaa and Morpheus, file-swappers are now turning to newer iterations, such as Blubster, which features both stronger privacy protection as well as easy-to-use encryption and decryption. Another program, called Waste, can be used to set up an encrypted instant-messaging and content-sharing network of 50 users, without the potential liability of a central server. And an offshoot of Freenet, dubbed Locutus, is targeting corporate users with its ability to search corporate networks for information distributed across a wide range of computers. "It's kind of like Google for people's hard disks, but with added security. You can define who has permission to find what kind of files," says Ian Clarke, who heads up Freenet and Locutus parent Cematics. (AP/CNN.com 6 Oct 2003) http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/internet/10/06/underground.internet.ap/index.ht ml

MUSIC DOWNLOADING NUMBERS FALL The lawsuits filed in September by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) against 261 people accused of illegally downloading copyrighted material seem to have been largely responsible for a 40% decrease in usage of the file-swapping service Kazaa. A typical user reaction is this one given by a 27-year-old marketing consultant in New York: "I've been holding off. I don't want to get sued. I was never a big user per se, but I do have a ton of music files.'' However, Chicago intellectual property lawyer Leonard Rubin suggests that the RIAA's victory may be short-lived: "The record companies are winning a skirmish, but it's still an open question as to whether they're winning the war. What they're not doing is figuring out how to either restore some favor among music lovers, or work with the system to figure out some way to please these people who they are now offending.''(San Jose Mercury News 1 Oct 2003) http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/6895800.htm

VANDALS STEAL SOURCE CODE OF POPULAR COMPUTER GAME Network vandals have stolen the source code of the new computer game "Half-Life 2" and are circulating it on the Internet. The company that owns the game spent five years developing it, a fact that prompted Dave Kosak, executive editor of GameSpy.com, an online gaming service provider, to see the silver lining in this criminal act, which is that it "points out that game developers have really valuable property. They spend years coding this engine, and the bigger you are, the bigger target you are.'' (AP/San Jose Mercury News 7 Oct 2003) http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/6953147.htm

DISNEY WANTS TO 'SCARE THE HECK OUT OF' DIGITAL PIRATES Disney executives think that Hollywood need to find digital locks on entertainment content to bar people who don't pay. Chief Operating Officer Bob Iger says: "I realize that there are a lot of concerns regarding privacy in this regard, invading people's homes and their home PCs, but at some point we've got to somehow ... scare the heck out of these people that they could get caught." NORTHWEST

I'm currently limiting Newsletter job searching to Oregon and South West Washington. However, for those interested in positions elsewhere in the Northwest should check out the following:

Sakson and Taylor. Most media jobs in the Seattle area seem to be promoted through Sakson and Taylor a Seattle based employment service that specializes in technical communication. The organization fills positions in animation, graphics, media, instructional design, writing and other areas. This seems to be a central connection to the media production opportunities in the Seattle area.

Seattle Times. Seattle area jobs not listed with Sakson and Tayler will be found in the Seattle Times online employment service.

Career Click .COM. This online service allows you to search individual, regional, or national Canadian newspapers for job positions. Remember that Canada has tight employment restrictions for non residents.

Vancouver Sun . The Vancouver Sun provides an online employment section that lists jobs in that great city of the North. These same jobs can be found on Career Click. Com listed aboved.
