"Books are the carriers of civilization. Without books, history is silent, literature dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation at a standstill." (Barbara Tuchman)

Living in the Pacific Northwest is usually a tranquil experience except for an occasional earthquake or volcanic eruption.
Mt. St. Helens has become active and tourist flock to photograph it. Some locations are better than others. This shot was taken during a flight between Seattle and Portland. |

Be Sure You Get that Suffix Correct. I mentioned, in the last issue of the Proscenia Newsletter, that FactCheck.org was a excellent resource for finding out the facts behind the blitz of campaign TV and print propaganda.
The Vice President also mentioned FactCheck during the recent Vice Presidential debates. The problem, however, was he gave the URL as FactCheck.com. FactCheck.com is a web site selling dictionaries. FactCheck.org is run by the Annenberg Public Center.
The Cayman Islands-based company that owns the FactCheck.com domain suddenly had 46,000 hits an hour increasing to over 100 hits a second after the debate creating technical problems for their servers.
With some sense of humor, and to avoid crashing their system, they started to forward the incoming traffic to GeorgeSoros.com a site that could handle the traffic. However, George Soros.com site didn't know about the forwarding.
When people reached the Soros site they were greeted with a bold header and article, Why We Must Not Re-Elect President Bush: A Personal Message From George Soros.
The whole situation is now being resolved - sort of. The George Soros.com site has a statement noting they do not own the FactCheck.com domain name nor are they responsible for redirecting people to their site.
The White House has corrected the transcript of the Vice Presidential Debate to give the correct address for FactCheck.org.

Note on web images: re: " ... the other thing is that using the height and width attributes in a program such as Dreamweaver does not make the image use less memory, or speed up the download time. The image, regardless of screen size, always uses the amount of memory required by the source image file from which it is derived."
For a long time I used Fireworks to do just what you're suggesting. I recently upgraded to the Adobe CS suite (and so far am using Photoshop's optimization, rather than buy Fireworks for OSX--clue me in if you think I should reconsider this), and discovered a new thing:
Adobe's GoLive actually has a feature (Smart Images, one of their Smart Objects) that automatically resizes a Photoshop image, as well as changing it to 72dpi and optimizing (you can even crop right inside GoLive). If you later change the size or cropping on your web page, it generates a new web image to fit your new dimensions. It references the original Photoshop image, and creates a new version for your site. Pretty nifty. (I've been
using GoLive since before Adobe bought it, but am now finally perusing a manual to learn more than in the "I have to know this to do what I'm doing right now" mode I've been in, thanks to doing some new things for a site.)
I never knew about the Gamma issue; hmmmm. Better add that hint to my toolkit!
Thanks
