Thought for today: "Computer graphics, particularly in film and entertainment is an art form and can be used to communicate meaningful ideals that help to evaluate our collective consciousness. If the industry would focus on creating movies and video games that have visionary themes of higher worlds, these images would certainly have a profound effect on society." - Scott Shubert

November 2 - Vol 2. No. 44

Up Front Sunday Morning:

The 30th annual Northwest Film and Video Festival begins on Thursday, November 6 and runs through November 15. Check out the NW Film Center schedule of events online. This year includes a three day Filmmaker's Conference. Some of the sessions are open free to the public and others, especially workshops, have a tuition fee. If you are interested in film making this conference is for you.

Animation is one topic I often hear discussed by Interns and others working in multimedia. The article Films From the Next Generation,by Jenny Donelan (Computer Graphics World) explores student made shorts that exemplify the evolution of CG animation. The article highlights four films; "Mickey's Buddy" by Peter Paquette, "El Arquero" by Raphael Perkins, "After You" by Christopher Cordingley, and "Poor Bogo" by Thelvin Cabezas. Each illustrates originality and reflect the fact that college-based computer animation programs are producing some leading edge animators.

Those in the Eugene area will have the opportunity to see the Animation Show at the Bijou Art Cinemas November, 7-13.The Animation show has put animated short films into more theaters than any other animation festival in American history, according to the show's promotional material. Animation is perhaps one of the most misunderstood of film genre and is "undervalued and underexposed" in American cinema.

The film "Stealing Time" by University of Oregon graduate Michael Garrity, will be screened in Eugene on November 7.The films story focuses around "Four friends straight out of college trying to take control of their lives. After struggling to make it in Hollywood with no success, Alec (Facinelli) enlists his friends (Foley, Embry, Ayanna) to pull off one of the largest bank heists in history."

If you are interested in politics and film, consider a new contest called Bush in 30 Seconds. This a a political advertising contest sponsored by moveon.org voter fund. Submissions will be accepted between November 24th and December 5th, 2003 and on web site voting will run between December 15th and December 30th, 2004.

This week's Scout Report comments about a project of possible interest to readers. The Open Video Project contains close to 2000 digitized clips and complete short films, and will be of great interest to those researching visual culture. The article notes,"Sponsored and developed at the Interaction Design Laboratory at the School of Information and Library Science and the University of North Carolina, the project began in 1998 with approximately 195 video segments. The archive available here provides video clips from a variety of sources, including quite a few obtained from U.S. government agencies. The entire archive may be searched by keyword, or browsed by genre, duration, or thematic collection. There are some rather compelling files to peruse here, including a collection of classic early television commercials (including one for Jello), a short silent film titled 2 A.M. in the subway, and an educational film titled A is for Atom, produced by the General Electric Company."

Scout Report also notes that The Internet Movie Database "...has grown by leaps and bounds in the past nine years. Containing literally millions of pieces of information, users looking for information from films such as Orson Wells' Chimes at Midnight to more contemporary fare can merely enter the title of the movie into the IMDB search engine and a complete record will be returned. Along with basic information about each film.."

The Digital Michelangelo Project provides an opportunity to examine the recent improvements in laser rangefinder technology. This innovated use of lasers allows one to "...accurately digitize the external shape and surface characteristics of many physical objects. Examples include machine parts, cultural artifacts, and design models for the manufacturing, movie making, and video game industries."

A team of 30 faculty, staff, and students from Stanford University and the University of Washington spent the 1998-99 academic year in Italy scanning the sculptures and architecture of Michelangelo. Now this data is being processed with the goal to produce a set of 3D computer models - one for each statue, architectural setting, and map fragment we scanned - and to make these models available to scholars worldwide. The project site provides a variety of material that lets you explore the application of this technology.

has introduced a new search feature that may prove particularly useful to researchers. They call it "Search Inside the Book". When you put in a word or group of words into the Amazon search box, the search will return items with the words not only in the title or author, but within the text of the book itself.  Although this feature is not displayed with all items, Amazon claims to have digitized over 120 million pages so you have a good chance of seeing a number of such results.More information can be found in a .

I hope you had a pleasant Halloween weekend and that the goblins have been good to you. I couldn't resist this notice on the door of a local bank. I found it not only humorous but also philosophical about daily life.

DISCUSSION: Bogus or Real Web Sites?

Bogus web sites have become a serious problem for those who surf the Internet in search of accurate information. The spoof site, SkyHigh Airlines (noted in an earlier Up Front Sunday Morning column) is one example. Here is a list of links to additional sites that, in some cases, are hard to distinguish between bougus or real.

California Velcro Crop Under Attack."California's important Velcro crop, vital to the clothing, footwear, and sporting goods industries, has been severely stressed by drought, disease, and pests."

Boilerplate Man. "Built in a small Chicago laboratory , Boilerplate was originally designed as a prototype soldier for use in resolving the conflicts of nations. Although it was the only such prototype, Boilerplate was eventually able to exercise its proposed function by participating in several combat actions."

Bonzai Kitten. This is a site with very dark humor about raising kittens as one would a Bonzai tree. It takes a while to realize this is not for real.

Burmese Mountain Dog is a medium sized, muscular dog originally bred in Burma (Myanmar) to guard Buddhist temples. The Burmese Mountain Dog Club of America was established in 1985 to foster the breed in the United States and the world.

Dihydrogen Monoxide. "Dihydrogen Monoxide Research Division (DMRD), currently located in Newark, Delaware. The controversy surrounding dihydrogen monoxide has never been more widely debated, and the goal of this site is to provide an unbiased data clearinghouse and a forum for public discussion."

GenoChoice. "Create your own genetically healthy baby online. From the first human male pregnancy to the first successful medical application of nanotechnology, RYT Hospital-Dwayne Medical Center has dramatically advanced the art, science, and technology of medicine..."

Male Pregnancy."In the years since the first "test tube baby" was born in 1978, physicians and scientists from RYT Hospital have been working to develop a viable technique for the successful impregnation of male individuals."

Mankato, Minnesota.Mecca for scores of knowing Midwesterners. The winter temperature in many Mankato neighborhoods has never dropped below a balmy 70 degrees.

SEC. "McWhortle Enterprises is an established and well-known manufacturer of biological defense mechanisms. Fortune 500 companies routinely use McWhortle Defense systems to protect their far-flung executives living in dangerous areas. These discreet, confidential safeguards have for years given employees and their families peace of mind".

REGULATION OF CYBER CAFES An appeals court in Orange County, California, will soon be deciding whether to uphold a lower-court ruling that prohibits the town of Garden Grove from imposing strict regulations on cyber cafes -- regulations enacted because city officials found that cyber cafes that provide Internet access and video games were attracting gangs and violence. Owners sued the city, saying their businesses were being unfairly picked-on. (Los Angeles Times 24 Oct 2003) http://www.latimes.com/technology/la-me-cyber24oct24,1,2911110.story?coll=la

SCREENERS CODED TO PREVENT MOVIE PIRACY A compromise has been reached that will make possible a carefully controlled distribution of free cassettes to Oscar voters for private screening during the upcoming awards season. The movies will be numbered VHS cassettes rather than easily copied DVDs, and they will be coded for tracing if they are sold or pirated. Academy members will sign contracts taking responsibility for any "screeners" they accept, and making them subject to possible banishment from the Academy if the screeners are later found on the black market. (Washington Post 24 Oct 2003) http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A9Oct23.html

COPY-MANAGED CD BOOSTS SALES FIGURES. BMG Entertainment is cautiously optimistic about its latest experiment in discouraging music copying. The new Anthony Hamilton album, "Comin' From Where I'm From," hit the shelves in late September on a CD with built-in "copy management" technology. Buyers were limited to making three copies of the CD, and BMG says so far, the Hamilton album has experienced a slower-than-average sales drop-off -- 23% vs. the typical 40-60% after the first week. "I know my science well enough to know that correlation does not mean causation," says Jordan Katz, senior VP of sales at BMG's Arista label. "I would not go out on a limb and say this was the only reason [sales] were down only 23%. However, I would say it was a contributing factor." The CD also allows users to e-mail songs to friends, who can download and play them on their computers for 10 days before they expire. A lack of buyer backlash against the technology has prompted Katz to put the copy management software on at least two more upcoming releases. (Washington Post 30 Oct 2003) http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A38Oct29.html

EXTENDING THE MUSIC LIBRARY.Two students at MIT have developed an electronic music library that allows anyone on campus to access 3,500 CDs. Called the Library Access to Music Project (LAMP), the system lets a student go to its Web site to select a CD and have it delivered through the campus closed-circuit cable TV to the student's dorm room or other campus site. One of the students who conceived of LAMP explains: "We had a library in school that closed at 7 p.m. The school had this great music in the library, but you couldn't get there. I was thinking, how could we get students better access to this library?" In 2001, the two creators of LAMP received a grant from iCampus, a Microsoft-backed alliance with MIT. GAMES ARE WHERE THE GIRLS ARE. Girls increasingly are getting hooked on computer games and game makers are beginning to notice. According to a new survey by the Entertainment Software Association, about 26% of all video and computer gamers are women 18 or older, a finding that has resulted in more companies offering card games, puzzles and word games, which are more appealing to women than the male-dominated slugfests like "Quake" and "Doom." Microsoft says 68% of the 30 million registered players at its www.zone.com site are women, and Game Universe reports that 60% of its eight million registered games are women. Meanwhile, simulation games such as "The Sims" have found a following among females, which make up about 56% of the players. "Women just have better taste in these things," says a senior analyst at Jupiter Research. Similar demographics are apparent at the newly launched There.com, which offers players a free-form animated world where users create characters and then socialize, build houses, exchange goods or simply wander around. One enthusiastic There player says she's logged in an average of four hours a day since joining. "Work and There are my life," she says. NINE OUT OF TEN KIDS USE COMPUTERS. About 90% of U.S. children ages 5 to 17 use computers and 59% of them use the Internet, according to two new studies released by the U.S. Department of Education. The new data also show that 99% of public schools now have
Internet access, up from 35% eight years ago. "Children are often the first adopters of a lot of technology," says John Bailey, who oversees educational technology for the federal agency. "? Students, by and large, are dominating the Internet population." That's not surprising, given the rapid penetration of computer technology among U.S. homes, says educational technology expert Peter Grunwald. "The dramatic increase in younger kids' use of technology is not disconnected from what's going on with their parents and their families. Younger kids are likely to have younger parents, and it is those parents, especially mothers, who have a much higher comfort level with technology than older parents -- or even younger parents of five years ago." Almost 75% use the Net for help in school assignments and more than half use it for e-mail, IM-ing or playing games. Research shows the digital divide is still evident, however: while almost two-thirds of white youth aged 5-17 use the Internet, less than half of black youngsters do, and slightly more than a third of Hispanic young people log on. (AP 30 Oct 2003) http://apnews.excite.com/article/20031030/D7UGGVI00.html

MEDIA TOTS According to the 1,065 parents surveyed for the Kaiser Foundation-sponsored
national study "Zero to Six: Electronic Media in the Lives of Infants,Toddlers and Preschoolers," a quarter of children under 2 years old have TVs in their bedrooms, and two-thirds of kids under 2 use some kind of screen media (computer, DVD, TV) on a typical day, for an average of about two hours a day. And for children under the age of 6, the average of two hours a day spent with screen media is more than three times the amount of time they
spend reading or being read to. (Washington Post 28 Oct 2003) http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A31Oct28.html

CELL PHONE REHAB? Substance abuse experts say some of today's cell phone users exhibit
symptoms very similar to addiction when it comes to their communications habits. "People literally detox from their phones. Text messaging, games -- these are all sources of isolation, a way to zone out," says a spokeswoman for a leading substance abuse clinic in Southern California, which requires cell phones to be checked upon admission. Critics say the word "addiction" is over-used, and that the test should be whether there are harmful consequences involved. But while frequent cell phone use hasn't yet been determined to cause physical damage, it may have a negative impact on relationships when talking on the phone becomes more important than talking to the person you've invited on a date. Then of course, there's the yet-unresolved issue of talking on the phone while driving, and the condition described as "pseudo-attention deficit disorder," where meeting participants while away their time on their "crackberry" RIM devices instead of paying attention to the topic at hand. Virgin Mobile has taken the controversy to heart, and has published on its Web site the "Textercises" recommended by the British Chiropractic Association to avoid straining hands and fingers while text-messaging. They call it "Practicing Safe Text." (Wired.com 25 Oct 2003) http://www.wired.com/news/medtech/0,1286,60936,00.html

I'm currently limiting my Newsletter job searching to Oregon and South West Washington. However, for those interested in job positions elsewhere in the Northwest may I recommend the following

Sakson and Taylor. Most media jobs in the Seattle area seem to be promoted through Sakson and Taylor a Seattle based employment service that specializes in technical communication. The organization fills positions in animation, graphics, media, instructional design, writing and other areas. This seems to be a central connection to the media production opportunities in the Seattle area.

Seattle Times. Seattle area jobs not listed with Sakson and Tayler will be found in the Seattle Times online employment service.

Career Click .COM. This online service allows you to search individual, regional, or national Canadian newspapers for job positions. Remember that Canada has tight employment restrictions for non residents.

Vancouver Sun . The Vancouver Sun provides an online employment section that lists jobs in that great city of the North. These same jobs can be found on Career Click. Com listed aboved.
