November
16, 2003 - Vol 2. No. 46

Up
Front Sunday Morning:
I
recently returned from Seattle aboard Amtrak's evening train. As
I boarded there seemed to be lively conversation among those who
had already settled in for the trip to Eugene.
Only
after I sat for a minute and looked around, did I realize that all
those actively engaged in coversation were not talking to fellow
passengers. They were chatting on their cell phones. When they all
had concluded their conversations, silence filled the fully booked
train. So it is with life in our digital world.
I
designed multimedia presentations in the 1970's that used multiple
slide projectors, screens, and analog soundtracks. The panorama above
is from a three screen and six projector presentation about Hood's
Canal located in Washington state. Today's Discussion Section explores the changing role of the multimedia
designer.
UO
Journalism graduate Mike Ferry was recently mentioned in this newsletter
for his Northwest Emmy award winning documentary, "Reclaimed
Treasure:The History of Silver Falls." Now two short video
clips (1
and 2
)of this film are made available online through the UO
Media Relations Office.
Some
readers may be familiar with the industrial design work and film
projects of Charles
and Ray Eames. The Eameses embraced the mid-20th century visionary
concept of modern design as an agent of social change, elevating
it to a national agenda. Eames designed furniture
is a product that people immediately recognize today, even though
they might not know the designers.
The
Eameses produced over 100 short films and multimedia slide programs
beginning in the early 1950's. These were essays which clearly expressed
their philosophy and design ideas. Charles once said that their
films came "... about as a result of one of two situations:
it’s either a logical extension of some immediate problem
we are working on, or it is some we have been wanting to do for
a long time and can’t put it off any longer.'" Perhaps
the most familiar film is Powers
of Ten that explains the universe in terms of this mathematical
concept. Starting at a one meter square image of a picnic (10
+0) (seen to the left), the camera moves ten times further away
every ten seconds to the edge of the universe (10 +25). Then the
journey is reversed, ultimately reaching the interior of an atom
in the hand of a sleeping man (10 -18).
You
can down load clips of Eames
Films from the Eames web site. These include: Sofa Compact
,The Lounge Chair,Soft Pad,Herman Miller at
the Brussels Worlds Fair and The Fiberglass Chair,
Kaleidoscope, Jazz Chair, Eratosthenes,
and Tops. These are well worth screening given their historical
and pioneering value in the use of film media. My favorite film,
Toccata
for Toy Trains is available at the
Powers Of 10 site as Shockwave clip. It is not the best clip
of a film I've seen, but it will give you some insight to the film's
content.

You
probably have been awed by images of earth taken by satellite or
the space shuttle. The Earth
as Art: A Landsat Perspective site is devoted to Landsat satellite
images of the Earth's surface. This is an exhibit from the Library
of Congress.
Today's
Hoods Canal panorama was made by scanning three slide images originally
photographed for a three-screen display. Then, using Photoshop,
I adjusted the color balance and contrasts so that the images matched
one with one another as best as I could with my current set of Photoshop
skills. Finally, I aligned the images, blurred the lines between
each and cropped as needed.

Random
Links provides an opportunity to share online web resources. Listed
sites may focus around a specific topic or be truly random. If you
have a collection of hot links you'd like to share please let us
know (newsletter@proscenia.net).
Today's
links focus on the interactive nature of the Web. At each of the
following sites you are to be engaged in some type of interactive
experience ranging from the creation of an animated face to composing
your own music. Have fun!
Bembo's
Zoo. This Zoo is made up of interactive flash animation with
sound. Explore a zooscape of animals made entirely from Bembo letterforms
and punctuation marks.
Brand
Me. This interactive experience is designed for children but
is nice to look at from a design perspective. The objective is to
develop a TV commercial that shows how advertisers use information
to create adverts that target your interests. "Branding is
about finding out what people want, making a product that matches
what they want, and then, through advertising, creating a ‘personality’
for the product to show how it always matches what they want."
Creating
Music.
This is a great online site to encourage children (and adults) to
compose and perform music they make online with tools provided by
composer Morton Subotnick.
Learning
Vocabulary Can Be Fun
Designed for younger students, the site includes four educational
activities, including a word search, quizzes, hangman, and a match
game. In the word game, visitors can choose their skill level, then
pick a set of themed words to be included in the game, such as birds
or colors. In the match game, visitors can start by reviewing each
thematic set of cards, which feature a voice that also says the
name of the item featured on each card. Once again, visitors can
elect to pick their skill level and so on. Finally the quiz allows
visitors to select from different sets of questions, such as those
about opposites and synonyms and queries about the animal kingdom.
Overall, this site serves as a nice adjunct to classroom learning
activities for preschool or younger elementary school students.

DISCUSSION:
You Do What For A Living? |
What
is a multimedia specialist?
Most anyone and can describe,in general terms, what it is a nurse,
fireman, postal worker, or carpenter, does for a living. But if
asked what a multimedia specialist does they'll probably reply with
a blank stare.
The
term multimedia became popular in the 1960's when it referred to
the design and development of multi-projector
slide and sound media. This multi-image format was extensively
used in business and industry for training, motivational presentations,
and large exhibition shows. It remained popular through the 1980's
as used in museums exhibits, world fairs, and performance events.
Many production houses had staff of trained photographers, graphic
artists and others who worked on these products.
Multimedia
projects ranged from 2 projector slides shows to large presentations
of up to 40 or more projectors controlled first with punched paper
tape and later electronic signals on analogue audio tape. College
courses in multimedia design were offered and the Association for
Multi-Image was formed along with annual festivals, conferences,
and events.
As
technology changed, the term multimedia became more frequently associated
with computer based media. A multimedia specialist today has expertise
in digital audio and visual media and is able to bring words, sound,
photos, animation, video, and graphics all together in a multimedia
digital presentation.
Most
specialist have knowledge, as needed, of software and computer programming.
Some are quite specialized such as those who work in the animation
and game design industry.
There
are some developers who have expertise in the areas of information
or instructional design, and media communication theory.Such individuals
work on the development of educational projects.
The
multimedia product today may be delivered over the Internet, on
a CD ROM, video, DVD disc, or some other mediated form. The content
is most often instructional, informational, commercial, entertainment
or game based.
A multimedia
specialist is a skilled individual who has expertise in many of
the following areas:
- Conceptual
design: One is able to visualize the big picture. A conceptual
designer is responsible for providing the overall plan of a game,
web site, or multimedia project
- Graphic
design: The designer is able to apply the basic concepts and practices
involved in the design of graphic solutions to visual problems.
- Computer
Graphics: Most positions today require one be able to artisitcally
use software applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash
- Audio
design, recording and editing: The visual is only half of the
product and being able to effectively record and edit sound files
and sound tracks for media productions is key to being a multimedia
producer.
- Video
recording and editing: Multimedia means using motion graphics
and video footage. This requires expertise in using programs such
as Final Cut Pro, Premier, and Avid
- Writing:
The word is always with us and being able to effectively write
scripts, convey ideas, and deliver information in a clear and
logical way is a critical skill.
-
Interactive media and interface design: Most multimedia requires
user participation. Designers need to know how to program interaction
through a carefully designed interface
- Web
page design and editing. The web has become a standard medium
for educational and business purposes. A multimedia producer needs
to know how to use applications such as using Dreamweaver and
Front Page to design web site material..
- Programming:
There are times when design problems require an understanding
of how to program solutions. A rudimentry level of skill helps
in many situations.
- Instructional
design: Many web sites and multimedia products are designed that
require an understanding of how people learn from well organized
material. Producers of educational materials must have some level
of expertise in the area of instructional design and technology
- Database
design and maintenance: How does a shopping cart work? One of
the more serious questions a web designer today must answer and
be able to implement. Many sites require database design and maintenance
knowledge and skill.
- Project
management: Everyone needs to know how to manage a project. If
you are a lead designer your management and organizational knowledge
and skills become critical to the successfull completion of a
project on time.
Many
multimedia specialists work as a member of a design team in a firm
that specializes in media production. These include both small and
large production houses that may need individuals with a variety
of expertise. Projects often include the development of DVD, CD-ROM,
web, and video material. Production houses usually have a core staff
supplemented by contracted designers who have skills related to
a specific project.
Some
individuals are self employed and work on a contract bases with
a variety of clients ranging from non-profits to business and government.
The
growing game design industry has need of qualified multimedia specialists
Those who have expertise with programming, 3D design, and animation
are especially sought after by this industry.
Some
individuals work for a business, government, or agency as a web
designer. Their principle responsibility is the design, development,
and maintenance of online services. These are often contracted assignments
although some firms hire in-house staff for Internet material.
Television
stations, printers, Internet service providers, graphic art services,
and other media outlets will employ individuals with multimedia
design skills.
Educational
media services from local school districts through college and university
hire individuals with training and knowledge of multimedia design
and development.
Specialized
production agencies that design special effects and other computer
generated graphics for film and television hire those who skills
unique to that industry.
There
are many opportunities by which to gain needed skills and training.
There are two and four year community college and university that
offer degree programs in multimedia design. One can also take special
courses and workshops offered by organizations specializing in training
but which are not degree oriented.
The
field will constantly grow and change as it is influenced by new
developments in technology and audio-visual delivery systems.

YOUNG
MEN TRADE THE TUBE FOR THE PC. After a recent study reported
that young men aged 18 to 34 had pretty much deserted network television,
advertisers fervently hoped that the highly desirable demographic
cohort would show up online, and two new reports released this week
indicate that's "where the guys are." comScore Media Metrix
found that nearly 27 million young men in the desired age group
spent an average of 32 hours each online in September, 17% more
than the "average" Internet user. "People who have
grown up with the Internet, we knew were spending less time watching
TV," says comScore president Peter Daboll, a distinction that
especially pronounced when it came to heavy vs. light TV viewers.
Confirmed couch potatoes -- those who consume 5 hours or more a
day of network programming -- surf the Net "lightly,"
while "chair potatoes" logged five times the number of
page views as their couch-bound brethren. A second study by the
Online Publishers Association corroborates those results, indicating
that young men are frequent visitors to news, information and entertainment
Web sites, spending an average of 21 hours per week online, compared
with 15.7 hours watching television. Analysts say the OPA numbers
may be skewed a bit high, however, because the study looked only
at self-reported frequent visitors to Web sites. (Internet News

PLAYING
GAMES ON THE JOB COULD BOOST PRODUCTIVITY.
Yesterday we reported that personal Web surfing on company time
can be benficial, and now a report from the University of Utrecht
in the Netherlands indicates that workers who were allowed to indulge
in an occasional game of Solitaire or Minesweeper had more favorable
attitudes toward their jobs and toward work in general. "We
told them from now on for the next month you are allowed to play
games for up to one hour a day, and you can choose when you want
to play," said Utrecht professor Jeffrey Goldstein, who emphasized
that his research was a very early stage and the findings preliminary.
Goldstein plans to do a much larger-scale study, using more complicated
games that involve strategy decisions or role playing, but he noted
that simple games like Solitaire can be used as a strategy to break
up the work day and give people's brains a rest from complex tasks.
"I compare games with a coffee break. If you are like me, you
use them in a strategic, functional, useful way." Being allowed
to choose how one uses one's time also contributes to job satisfaction,
which can lead to higher productivity and less absenteeism. (BBC
News 7 Nov 2003) http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3247595.stm
PERSONAL
SURFING AT WORK CAN BE A GOOD THING. Here's a new book
that turns conventional wisdom about personal surfing on company
time on its head. Claire Simmers and Murugan Anadarajan have co-authored
a human resources guide to worker Web use that indicates a looser
attitude toward personal surfing can yield some beneficial side
effects. "Personal Web usage in the workplace has a negative
perception, especially among administrators who often see it as
inefficient and creating a decrease in work productivity,"
says Simmers. But according to the authors' research, personal surfing
at work can result in better time management, lower stress levels,
improved skill sets and a happier balance between work and personal
life. (AP 5 Nov 2003) http://apnews.excite.com/article/20031105/D7UKH7E81.html

HOUSEHOLDS HIT THE DELETE KEY. The aggressive campaign
waged by the Recording Industry Association of America against illegal
music downloads is showing results: 1.4 million U.S. households
deleted all the digital music files residing on their computers

publicity over the RIAA's hardball tactics prompted the massive
cleanup, but added that consumers' overall opinion of the recording
industry is suffering because of it. (Reuters/CNN.com 6 Nov 2003)

HELP!
I'M BEING HELD PRISONER BY MY TIVO! TiVo
-- the personal video recorder that cleverly records programs all
day on its hard drive based on the preferences of owners -- is being
blamed for turning otherwise-casual TV watchers into slaves shackled
to their sofas, unable to keep up with the flood of their favorite
shows. Fanatical TiVo users complain that their hard drives -- which
come in either 40-hour or 80-hour sizes -- quickly fill up with
programs they can't bear to delete, but don't have time to watch.
"For something that is supposed to be relaxing and unwinding
at the end of the day, you (think), 'Wow! I have a lot of shows
to watch,'" says Scott Bedard, technology director at an online
media company in San Francisco. Kevin Coto, a financial systems
consultant in New York, can relate: "I get to the point now
where I skip going to the gym so I can keep up with watching 'Dawson's
Creek' reruns," which are broadcast for two hours each day.
"I look forward to when they end so I won't be so stressed."
Nevertheless, most TiVo aficionados can't imagine life without their
favorite device. "If the box was broken I would have to go
out and buy a new one right away. I can't see myself going a week
without it," says Coto. (Reuters 11 Nov 2003) http://www.reuters.com/

I'm
currently limiting my Newsletter job searching to Oregon and South
West Washington. However, for those interested in job positions

be promoted through Sakson and Taylor a Seattle based employment
service that specializes in technical communication. The organization
fills positions in animation, graphics, media, instructional design,
writing and other areas. This seems to be a central connection to
the media production opportunities in the Seattle area.
