December 21 - Vol 2. No. 51

Up Front Sunday Morning:

Proscenia celebrates both the winter and summer solstice with our readers tomorrow. For those in the northern hemisphere the growing darkness ends. Those across the equator will enjoy the longest day of the year basking in summer's warmth. We wish everyone a pleasant solstice wherever you may be on our fine planet.

We have an exclusive interview with Canadian soundscape composer Hildegard Westerkamp this week. Two of Westerkamp's compositions were woven into the sound fabric of Gus Van Sant's movie "Elephant". Our interview explores the negotiation process by which an artist's work is obtained for use in a feature film. You'll find this informative interview in today's Discussion section.

Readers know that I have a fascination with micromovies. My interest in telling extremely short stories came about when I first read Jerome Stern's "Micro Fiction: An Anthology of Really Short Stories."

When Stern was compiling his anthology, he asked that contributors limit their stories to no more that 250 words. For many this seemed impossible. Yet others took the limitation as a challenge. He receive hundreds of stories for consideration. Here is an example told in only 53 words.

Hostess by Amy Hempet

She swallowed Gore Vidal. Then she swallowed Donald Trump. She took a blue capsule and a gold spansule - a B-Complex an E- and put them on the tablecloth a few inches apart. She pointed the one at the other. "Martha Stewart," she said, "meet Oprah Winfrey."

She swallowed them both without water.

Source: Micro Fiction: An Anthology of Really Short Stories, page 100.

Stern's anthology is a valuable reference when thinking about micromovies. What is needed to tell a story quickly and effectively and can this be done through image and sound? It is a challenge to think about and practice as a design task.

I also recommend Ray Bradbury's "Zen in the Art of Writing: Essays On Creativity". This is a fascinating book full of Bradbury's insights into the creative process. It will help you discover the joy in writing and production.

We have become so accustomed to checking our e-mail or browsing the web that we forget how privileged we are to have these resources. According to the International Telecommunication Union, about 70% of the world's Internet users live in countries that make up only 16% of the world's population. Despite the Internet's global reach, most of the material on the Internet is inaccessible to the vast non-English-speaking population of the world.

Here are three more opportunities to look forward to in the coming months.

DISCUSSION: Adapting Original Music for Film - An Interview with Hildegard Westerkamp

Gus Van Sant's "Elephant" is now playing nation wide. It is a film that gently and poetically observes the daily comings and goings of its' teenage characters who, at day's end will have become the victims of school violence. High school is a unique experience for each student. For some it is exciting and friendly. For others it is a difficult and lonely time. We find the film's high school culture a complex environment in which life can quickly shift from light to darkness.

Van Sant borrowed the title "Elephant" from British filmmaker Alan Clark's documentary about sectarian violence in Northern Ireland. Clark had titled his film based on the saying that a problem is often " ... as easy to ignore as an elephant in the living room." It seems an appropriate title for Van Sant's film about high school life in a time of violence.

Hildegard Westerkamp, is a Canadian composer whose work was selected by Van Sant and sound designer Leslie Shatz for the film. The following interview with Westerkamp explores her experience in having work adapted for use in a feature film.

PN: From what composition of yours did Director Van Sant select a segment for use in his film, "Elephant"?

HW: He selected segments from two pieces: "Beneath the Forest Floor" (released by empreintes Digitales, Montreal on "Transformations") and "Türen der Wahrnehmung" ("Doors of Perception") (originally released by Nonsequitur on Radius #4)

PN: How long before the film was released were you contacted about the use of your composition?

HW: I am not sure about the exact release date of the film, but I do know that the film was awarded the Palme d'Or and Best Director prizes at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival, which I believe was in May 2003. I was contacted for the first time on December 27, 2002!

PN: How were you informed about Mr. Van Sant's interest in your composition? Did Mr. Van Sant contact you directly?

HW: No his producer Danny Wolf contacted me.

PN: Were you told why your composition had been selected? Or how it would be used?

HW: Yes, Danny Wolf explained it in fair detail. About "Beneath the Forest Floor" he said in one email, "We love the mood and emotion that it evokes". He also was open to my questions of HOW they would use the compositions. He was quite detailed especially in explaining how excerpts of "Türen der Wahrnehmung" would be used, referring to the way scenes get repeated in the film from different perspectives and viewpoints. But I never found out exactly which parts would be used until I saw the film.

PN: How was your composition eventually used as part of the film's sound design?

HW: I saw the film only once and don't remember all the details. But one excerpt of "Türen der Wahrnehmung" was used repeatedly in one of the scenes that was repeated from different perspectives, but showing the same corridor, the same doors. The excerpt from "Beneath the Forest Floor" came at one of the most dramatic points in the film, after the first shooting had occurred, punctuating in a most eerie way the silence, the horror of that moment.

PN: What was your response?

HW: I was very impressed how the excerpts were used. Although "Beneath the Forest Floor" was originally a piece about the indigenous forests on the Pacific west coast of Canada and was very much trying to underscore the peace and depth of wilderness/wildness in these environments ---its use in that moment in the film worked remarkably well. Most likely it worked because the composition, besides trying to create a peaceful atmosphere, contains an eerie tone, one that refers to the darkness of forest, the mystery, that which makes us afraid to walk through such a forest in the dark.

His use of the excerpts of "Türen der Wahrnehmung" was particularly interesting to me. I had never been very satisfied with that composition, found it somehow incomplete, inconclusive. When I heard the ways in which it was used in Elephant, I thought "now I am glad that I have composed it, someone knew how to work with it". It completed the piece in a strange way for me, even though he only used a miniscule part of it---the whole piece is 30 minutes long.

PN: Your compositions had already been recorded and released on CD. Did Van Sant use a segment directly from CDs or did you have to prepare a special digital edition for him?

HW: No he used them directly from the CDs.

PN: Could you share some perspective on what is involved for obtaining permission to use a composer's work in a film or media production?

HW: This was a bit nerve wrecking for me as I had never been involved in such contracts. Most other situations had been on a smaller scale. I consulted with some colleagues more experienced with providing music/sound for such a film. What was most important was that I would retain my rights for future use of the pieces. The contract only had to do with this film, even excluding the production of a potential future soundtrack on CD (although not anticipated originally a CD of the soundtrack was produced in France after the film won the prize in Cannes).

PN: Given the experience you had with your work being used in "Elephant",what advice would you give media producers on how to contact and arrange for an artist's work to be used in their own production?

HW:My most urgent advice has to do with timing. This was a typical example of how sound/music is dealt with---always at the last moment. Because the music was already composed in this particular case it was not such a big problem. But I felt pushed in terms of the contract negotiations. There was an assumption that I would be able to respond instantly, drop everything else that was going on in my life! Meanwhile I needed to do some research and inform myself of what a good contract is in such a situation for the composer. This takes a while. Later I found out that everything had to happen so fast as they were in the final stages of the film--trying to get it ready for Cannes. This kind of pressure is rather unfair to anyone involved.

If a composer is contacted to do the composing I feel strongly that filmmakers should involve composers at an early stage. Composers, just like all others working on the film, need to familiarize themselves with the film, its' moods, progressions, deeper meanings and need some time to convert that knowledge into music. The reason why the music and soundtracks of so many movies are lousy and superficially produced can be found in the incredible rush that is suddenly demanded from composers: most of the time they have been engaged at the very end of the film's production, when the push to finish is the fiercest. This is usually
audible.

PN: Thank you.

FEATURED SITE:The Media Theory Site

The Media Theory Site provides an introduction to the concepts which form the field of media theory. It was developed by Professor David Gauntlett of the University of Bournemouth in January 1999. The media theories of writers such as Anthony Giddens, Judith Butler, Michel Foucault, and a number of other scholars is available. "Equally intriguing is the set of trading cards developed by Gauntlett that provide brief facts about such concepts as psychoanalysis, postmodernity, and girl power. After reading through the materials on media theory located here, visitors may also elect to take a sixteen-question quiz, featuring visual clues".

U.N. VOTES TO STUDY ADMINISTRATION OF THE INTERNET. The delegates at a U.N. conference on the Internet have decided that a "working group" should be set up to consider introducing more international oversight of the Internet and its administrative bodies (such as ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, a company that has a U.S. Commerce Department contract to coordinates Internet addresses and some other technical issues). At the conference, delegates from the developing countries were unsuccessful in getting the U.N. to take full administrative control of the Internet, although they did get a promise that ways will be explored to close the "digital divide" between richer and poorer nations. Eli M. Noam, who heads the Institute for Tele-Information at Columbia University, notes: "Even if it is not true, there is a perception that the U.S. government is running the Internet." BUSH SIGNS NATIONAL ANTI-SPAM LAW. A new law signed by President Bush will attempt to rid the Internet of unsolicited commercial e-mail ("spam") -- though many technology experts believe it will not be impossible for legislation passed by a single country to eliminate spam, because it is a global problem. However, supporters of the legislation say it gives state and federal law authorities the tools needed to track down and prosecute the largest and best-organized spammers. Democrat Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, a coauthor of the CAN-SPAM bill, explains: "Our message is the fight has just begun and enforcement has got to be tough, tough, tough." OVER-RELIANCE ON POWERPOINT LEADS TO SIMPLISTIC THINKING NASA's. Columbia Accident Investigation Board has fingered the agency's over-reliance on Microsoft PowerPoint presentations as one of the elements leading to last February's shuttle disaster. The Board's report notes that NASA engineers tasked with assessing possible wing damage during the mission presented their findings in a confusing PowerPoint slide so crammed with bulleted items that it was almost impossible to analyze. "It is easy to understand how a senior manager might read this PowerPoint slide and not realize that it addresses a life-threatening situation," says the report. NASA's findings are echoed in a pamphlet titled "The Cognitive Style of PowerPoint," authored by information presentation theorist Edward Tufte, who says the software forces users to contort data beyond reasonable comprehension. Because only about 40 words fit on each slide, a viewer can zip through a series of slides quickly, spending barely 8 seconds on each one. And the format encourages bulleted lists -- a "faux analytical" technique that sidesteps the presenter's responsibility to link the information together in a cohesive argument, according to Tufte, who concludes that ultimately, PowerPoint software oozes "an attitude of commercialism that turns everything into a sales pitch." FASTAP KEYPAD KEEPS FINGERS FLYING. While teenagers seem to catch on to new communications channels at the speed of light, older folks generally take much longer to adapt and adopt. Part of the problem is physical, says Fortune columnist David Kirkpatrick, who complains that the cumbersome keypad on most cell phones is a major obstacle to adults interested in text messaging. Enter the Fastap keypad -- the brainchild of David Levy, an inventor who spent five years doing ergonomic work at Apple. His cell phone keypad features tiny raised surfaces around each numeral that represent letters of the alphabet. The concept is surprisingly simple and intuitive -- Levy says users can reach 30 words a minute with a little practice. Panasonic has taken the plunge and produced the world's first Fastap phone, which is being tested by more than a dozen carriers around the world. "It's a fabulous technology, elegantly simple and intuitive for users. It still looks like a phone when you're finished integrating it into the devices. As a consequence, it should be picked up quite quickly by the manufacturers," says John Windolf, who's in charge of evaluating new technologies for the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association. A 2-gigabyte drive can store about 30 hours of music, according to a company spokeswoman. The 0.85-inch diameter drives will find their way into mobile phones and other portable gadgets, used for storing music and video clips. (AP 15 Dec 2003)

NEW TWIST ON CONTENT SHARING. As many universities rush to stock up on anti-plagiarism software and crack down on student downloading capacity, the University of Maine is taking a different tack. The university's Still Water media lab has established the Pool -- a collaborative online environment for creating and sharing images, music, videos, programming code and texts, where copyright concerns take a back seat. "We are training revolutionaries -- not by indoctrinating them with dogma but by exposing them to a process in which sharing culture rather than hoarding it is the norm," says Joline Blais, U. of Maine new media professor and Still Water co-director. "It's all about imagining a society where sharing is productive rather than destructive, where cooperation becomes more powerful than competition." A number of schools are experimenting with similar programs, notably the Creative Commons at Harvard and the Coalition for Digital Commons at Swarthmore, but open sourcing creative work is still considered a daring venture in today's highly charged copyright environment that pits "content" consumers against its creators. The Pool emphasizes distributed creativity, drawing from the model of distributed computing, where the value of the whole greatly exceeds the sum of the individual parts. "In 10 years we hope the paradigm will be so well-established as a social practice that the Pool will either be ubiquitous or unnecessary," says Blais. "We hope that the practice of cooperation will empower communities and individuals to the point where they can surpass the productivity and influence of corporations." (Wired.com 16 Dec 2003)

NEW INTEL CHIP COULD REVOLUTIONIZE DIGITAL TV MARKET At next month's Consumer Electronics Show, Intel plans to unveil its latest contribution to digital entertainment -- a new class of semiconductors that analysts say will significantly boost the quality of large-screen digital televisions while lowering their price from current stratospheric levels. The new technology, known as liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS), could deliver thin, lightweight 50-inch TV screens for as little as $1,000 -- possible in time for the 2004 holiday season. "I think this brings Moore's law to digital television," says one analyst. Intel's technology, which is one of a number of competing LCoS technologies, uses a multitude of tiny electronic shutters that can alter the amount of reflected light, creating high-resolution rear-projection images that can rival today's high-end plasma and LCD displays. The Intel announcement is expected to give a much-needed boost to the high-definition television market, which is just beginning to take off in the U.S. (New York Times 17 Dec 2003) http://partners.nytimes.com/2003/12/17/technology/17chip.html

NORTHWEST

I'm currently limiting Newsletter job searching to Oregon and South West Washington. However, for those interested in positions elsewhere in the Northwest may I recommend the following:

America's Job Bank.Provides a simple search engine that generates a number of NorthWest jobs. Try, for example, typing in Seattle and using as a keyword photoshop, graphics, web design, or video. Be sure to select the Arts, Design, Entertainment, Media category.

Sakson and Taylor. Most media jobs in the Seattle area seem to be promoted through Sakson and Taylor a Seattle based employment service that specializes in technical communication. The organization fills positions in animation, graphics, media, instructional design, writing and other areas. This seems to be a central connection to the media production opportunities in the Seattle area.

Seattle Times. Seattle area jobs not listed with Sakson and Tayler will be found in the Seattle Times online employment service.

Career Click .COM. This online service allows you to search individual, regional, or national Canadian newspapers for job positions. Remember that Canada has tight employment restrictions for non residents.

Vancouver Sun . The Vancouver Sun provides an online employment section that lists jobs in that great city of the North. These same jobs can be found on Career Click. Com listed aboved.
