Hands On Facilities for Young Media Producers

Appapachian Media Institute. Whitesburg, KY. Young people in eastern kentucky work with ami to learn how to use video cameras and audio equipment to document the unique traditions and complex issues of their mountain communities. Asian Media Center. Minneapolis, MN. AMA offers internships and volunteer opportunities for motivated students who want to assist in the Media Education, Media Production and Movie Exhibition areas and learn more about media production and the interworkings of a nonprofit organization.

BayKids. San Francisco, CA. BayKids brings the art of filmmaking to children faced with serious medical challenges and provides them with an outlet for creative self-expression, a means to learn new skills, and a venue through which they can share their personal stories with others.

Educational Video Center. New York City, NY. A media arts center that teaches documentary video production and media analysis to youth. A mission is to creatively use community-based video and multi-media as a means to develop the literacy research, public speaking, and work preparation skills of at-risk-youth.

Evergreen Youth Television, or simply EYTV, was founded with the mission of teaching youth to produce videos from a faith and values perspective. Since our creation in 1990, we have grown into a full-service production company as well. EYTV has produced a variety of videos: Fundraising videos, Promotional videos, PSA's and Informational videos. EYTV finds organizations who can't afford a professional video and ask them to be a client.

The Gulf Islands Film and Television School is a media production training facility on Galiano Island, BC. Students live and work at the school in weekend, one-week, or month-long sessions. Sessions are organised by age group (12-14 yrs., 14-19, 19+) and genre (drama, documentary, etc.). GIFTS emphasizes independent production, hands-on training, and respect for the creative process.

Hui Malama Learning Center. Maui Hawaii. The center offers a variety of media classes to youth in academic classes and in an afterschool program. The center works in collaboartion with the local cable access station to provide training and certification in video production and editing. The annual showcase of student work is a teen video award contest with audience choice awards. Currently the center is supervising the development of a youth led production company. Media Arts Center. San Diego, CA. The Center nurtures and supports media artists working in film, video, audio, and computer-based multimedia. The organization was founded to challenge the historical exclusion of under-represented communities from the media field, and distorted images of these communities by mainstream media. MACSD seeks to provide a forum for and promote the diversity of interests of San Diego Border Region media artists through regular screenings, educational outreach, distribution, film festivals, production and technical assistance, scholarships and fiscal sponsorships..

Media Bridges. Cincinnati, Ohio. Media Bridges offers a variety of educational opportunites within the media classes offered free all year round. We offer classes from basic camera instruction to graphic design. After certification in any our classes you are qualified to check out our media equipment and use our production facilites. Native Lens. Seattle, Washington. We are a Native American organization located in Washington State and we serve youth from across the country doing reservation based workshops and urban programming. Native Lens is a program of LONGHOUSE MEDIA which supports the growth and expression of Indigenous youth through digital media making.

911 Media Arts Center. Seattle, WA.The Center was created to support the expressive use of innovative media tools by providing the access, training and environment needed to create/exhibit works of enduring merit and artistic excellence. The Center believes that everyone can and should have access to the tools of communication

NW Film Center. Portland, OR. The Center's Young Filmmakers Program serves youth of all backgrounds and abilities throughout Oregon and beyond. Young Filmmakers is one of the oldest and most respected programs of its kind in the nation.

O T.E.A.M. Los Angeles. The Otis Teens, Educators, Artists and Mentors Initiative prepares low-income youth for a productive life path through skill-based art and design education and mentoring to facilitate their personal development and entry into higher education and the workplace. Students receive instruction over a twenty-week period, six hours per week. During that time, students are exposed to the basic principles of art making with a focus on multimedia art.

Plugged In: East Palo Alto, CA. Plugged In connects individuals and cultivates minds by creating the opportunity to produce, express, and contribute using technology. Our vision is a community in which opportunities abound for people to contribute and innovate. Plugged In's primary medium is Internet and computer technology and we would like to use television and radio as time, resources, and opportunities allow.

Reel Grrls. Seattle, WA. A unique after-school media & technology training program that empowers girls to critique media images and to gain media technology skills in a safe, open environment, mentored by a network of multi-cultural women media professionals. Each year, 70 girls go through our program and graduate with valuable skills in video, audio, and web production.

SaySi. Our Media Arts Studio has a film focus and our students narratives and documentaries have been in several film festival across the country. Serving San Antonio’s youth, SAY Sí is a year round, long-term, non-profit multidisciplinary arts program that provides students opportunities to develop artistic and social skills in preparation for higher educational advancement and professional careers.

Spy Hop Productions. Salt Lake City UT. A not-for-profit youth media center committed to cultivating the visions and voices of an emerging generation via the big screen, the airwaves, and the world-wide-web. The center's goal is to cultivate the visions and voices of an emerging generation – via the big screen, the airwaves, and the world-wide-web.

Street Level Youth Media. Chicago, IL. The goal is educate Chicago's inner city youth in media arts and emerging technologies for use in self-expression, communication, and social change. Street-Level's programs build critical thinking skills for urban youth who have been historically neglected by government and mass media. Using video production, computer art and the Internet, Street-Level's young people address community issues, access advanced communication technology and gain inclusion in our information-based society.

Teen Producers Project. With The Teen Producers Project, professional media artists familiarize youth from all backgrounds, ages 9-18, with multiple media technologies and the art making process, stressing teamwork, creativity, self-esteem and critical thinking. The projects mission is to educate youth in media arts and emerging technologies for use in self-expression, communication and social change. Using video production, computer art and the Internet, these students address community issues, access advanced communication technology and gain inclusion in our information-based society.

Uth TV. Uth TV is an outlet for the next generation of storytellers. Young people have always had something to say, they just haven't been able to get their voices heard, especially through the mainstream media. Uth TV seeks to identify and work with outstanding teen media makers, we also want to make Uth TV a place where any youth, no matter their technical skill level, can contribute their voice.

Vancouver Youth Radio. VYR is part of The Hastings Media Lab Project. The Hastings Street Media Lab consists of 5 components: Vancouver Youth Radio, The Hastings Street Recording Studio, Hastings Street Graphic Arts Studio, Hastings Street Video Studio and the Hastings Street School of Rock. This project is aimed at youth who are interested in multi media and digital creativity. All of our programs are free. All of the VYR content is made by youth for youth and the VYR rotation is programmed by youth for youth

Voices of Hope. The Community Spirit Teen Video Project provides media arts and leadership training for young people throughout communities in New Jersey. We prepare youth with the knowledge, tools, decision-making skills and the peer-to-peer and adult relationship building skills needed to create powerful, thought-provoking media on community issues that concern them—distributing the media as a catalyst for dialogue and social change.

Youth Channel. New York City. NY. An alternative to mass media created to provide equal access to all young people, regardless of ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or social status. The Youth Channel strives to build confidence, establish role models, inform, educate, and entertain. It empowers youth to believe they are capable of creating change within their communities and the world. The Youth Channel is governed and programmed by youth who want to make a difference.



Radio Arte. Chicago, IL. Radio Arte is a youth initiative of the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, is an educational radio station that serves the Pilsen/ Little Village neighborhood of Chicago. It trains, motivates and encourages youth to develop self-expression through the broadcast medium. It provides a forum for young people to be creative and responsible to the largest Mexicancommunity in the Radio Arte is commited to training young people (ages 15-21) from the Chicago metropolitan area in the art of broadcasting.

Radio Rookies is a New York Public Radio® initiative that provides teenagers with the tools and training to create radio stories about themselves, their communities and their world. A goal is to train young people to use words and sounds to tell true stories about themselves, their community, and the world.

Youth Radio. Berkeley, CA. Youth Radio's mission is to promote young people's intellectual, creative and professional growth through training and access to media and to produce the highest quality original media for local and national outlets. Through hands-on practice, working relationships with industry professionals, and production of award-winning programming, Youth Radio students learn the basics of broadcasting. In the process, they're exposed to a broad spectrum of media-related careers
